in the city of baltimore, 300 plow drivers, 15,000 tons of salt will be laid down in baltimore city before it's all said and done, and take a look at the result. white street, one of the main roads in downtown baltimore is covered. we shot video in waverly along 33rd street. this truck apparently tried to take that hill and spun out of the control and hit a tree. no one was injured in the crash. it shows you that it's dangerous conditions if you're not being as careful as you can. we haven't seen too many cars on the roads. we've seen a number of plows, but i have to tell you at the rate the snow is coming down, the plows really can't keep up. and so what you wind up with are downtown streets covered with a thick crust of snow. as we come back live now we'll show you how hard the snow is coming down at this hour. you can really see it whipping buy these downtown streets. heavy snow, and as i mentioned, within about the past half hour or an hour we've really seen a lot of stronger gusty winds coming in to the downtown area. so we're going to be watching how things are going out here. i've o

that is now the standard in baltimore. the january 1922 storm was a big one, especially down in washington d.c. a lot of people are comparing this one to the february 2003 storm. the one this past december was #seven on the list. temperatures are still just at or above freezing in many areas, but getting colder as we speak. without the sun, the radiation is still comes through the cloud deck. it will get colder overnight tonight, as the storm to the south begins to approach. one system has pushed into kentucky. it looks like this becomes the dominant feature and it moves off the carolina coast, rapidly strengthening overnight and pushing and all that moisture to our region. we think there'll be a mix to the south and east as the storm gets going, but the farther north and west you go, mainly snow. tomorrow morning is when it will become the heaviest. you could even hear some thunder as it rolls through tomorrow morning. as the system pulls away, even ocean city will get some snow tomorrow afternoon with accumulations. skie

where it intersects with white road in northwest baltimore. who departments were responding to a report of an armed suspect in the area. the detectives made their approach, as they came around the corner to the house, the suspect at least one suspect immediately opened fire with a handgun. >> reporter: police say two days prior to the detective being shot, there was a nonfatal drug involved shooting in the area. the detective who was hit thursday returned fire. police say his partner then engaged with a gunfire with another suspect. >> we know one suspect succumb to his wounds at the scene. the second suspect is in critical condition. >> reporter: the officer served four years in the united states marines, with one tour in iraq. the new mayor was on the job only a few hours, he rushed to the hospital to thank him for his service. >> i was so happy that he was alert, and things could have been so much worse. >> reporter: the detective's surgeon said those bullets missed mayor arteries. he believes the detective will probably need some repair su

what they have been doing is helping the local first responders in baltimore city, baltimore county, anne arundel county and they have been helping to get to some of their calls. it allows the governor to change the way the plow drivers run their shifts, they can only work so many hours but in the state of emergency the governor has said they can work longer than they usually shot. but it's important to snow if we hit blizzard condition with low visibility they may be forced to pull plow drivers off the road and in a heavy snow storm that snow could pile up quickly even on some of the major highways so state officials are hoping people will stay off the roads. there have been no fatalities on maryland roadways throughout this series of storms, they would like to keep it that way regardless of what happens tonight and tomorrow. live in towson, christian schaefer. >>> if you're expecting to fly out of bwi this your good marshall airport looks like you're going to have to wait for a while. flights ended earlier today and most airlines are also canceling out all flights for tomorrow. if

baltimore police were called after 2:00 a.m. to the bank of america building downtown where the overnight watchman was shot. he had tried to break up a fight that broke out in front of the building minutes after nightclubs nearby had closed. >> looks like this was a dispute over a girl. >>reporter: the attackers, police say, were targeting another man and his girlfriend, who they had been harassing on the street. >> our intended victim knew the security guard at bank of america building and went to start a converation with him. the ideas started making further advances towards the female. we are reviewing city-wide security camera, bank of america security cameras, but we don't have leads on suspects or people of interest. >>reporter: while police work to make an arrest, he makes sure his brother is remembered for his actions. >> it didn't surprise me. if you know james, james wanted to keep the peace and do the right thing. >>reporter: the victim's family, of course, is now hoping that someone with information about the suspect

we see that in baltimore county. where you actually see some yellow north of po corners between jarrodsville. we have heavy snow north of hamstead or manchester and around the west minutes better area. watching this band. this is the heavy band i'm concerned with. this is the one along 81. hagueers town, once that gets back in overhead we're going to have problems. you may be able to see the deeper blues. that's going to try to pull itself off of the coast and once that get here's if it does sit on top of us like some models are saying we'll be looking at blizzard conditions with snowfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour or more. the coastal system is just beginning to take over. you can watch the band push its way through on virginia. the mix you had that's going to turn over. even the rain in salisbury, baltimore and the beaches is going to be replaced by strong winds. snowfall rates 2 inches per hour or greater and it depends who gets the snowfall rates as to why we have this broad expectation of snowfall. i'm still g

megan gilliland is live at the baltimore city falls road salt yard in north baltimore with more on their strategy heading into the storm. here we go, megan. >> reporter: good morning, patrice. it feels like the calm before the storm. it's quiet at the salt yard and we are told that is because all of the crew members are at home resting preparing for a 12 hour shift that will begin 38 ter thilater thismorning. it's a huge job for all of these folks. we're talking about a major operation here in the city. over 300 workers will be out in full force. their top priority the primary roads out there. across the region plow trucks are loaded with salt and strategically located around and officials are gathering at the operation center staring the storm in the eye. a lot of work to be done here and there's even something you can do. >> don't go out if you don't absolutely have to he go out. i mean, that's a major, major help to the plows. if they can get to the streets because there's not a lot of cars in the way, we can get the job done the way we want to get it done. >> reporter: if you really

we are looking at heavy amounts of snow still coming down across baltimore. on 95, in fact, showed you this about half an hour ago. 15 minutes ago. car that slid off the highway up there in harford county. so if you don't have to venture out, don't. it is dangerous. and storm is working with a lot of moisture out of the south. and secondary low further off to the west. as we continue to see these systems wrapping into the cold air. all the moisture, plenty of moisture with the storm to work with. stretches back to indiana. the secondary low will be converging with this low pushing up from the south. over the eastern shore. so it looks like we will continue to deal with heavy snowfall tonight, into tomorrow morning. and blizzard like conditions that are setting up through the overnight. in fact, the winds are vigorous out there. at this time. with the latest with the warnings out there, and the snow totals that are potential that we could see across the area. here is meteorologist jessica starr. >> thank you, vytas. >> we have a blizzard warning in effect for

let me show you what we have going on. 31 in baltimore. 27 in oakland. we're dropping below freezing in a lot of places. it's still varied out there. 39 in d.c. and 36 at the ocean. the winds have come down considerably, also. tomorrow's not going to be as much of a factor as the past few days. it's breezy out of the west during the afternoon tomorrow. again we'll have sunshine. as we head to the afternoon as this storm moves our way, yes this one back in here that's going to be our next problem. this one out ahead of it will weaken as it moves our way. as the one over the rockies makes its way out into the plains it will gain strength then move our way. then you see the clouds increase as we head through the afternoon, but then as the storm arrives, for most of us this is going to be in the form of rain. notice the warm front. it passes through the mid- atlantic. that puts us in the warm sector part of the storm meaning we'll get above freezing and mainly rain for most of us. there's still a lot of snow pack on the ground and the rain's coming on top of
