this may go down as one of the top ten worse snowstorms in delaware history. it prompted the state of delaware, the governor to declare a state of emergency. all nonessential vehicles must be off the road as of 10:00 tonight. look around here. there are cars here on delaware avenue. these cars should not be out here right now. that's mostly for emergency crews a plow trucks can get through here. as far as how long that will be in effect, we north sure. we've seen plow trucks all night long. this is a very powerful storm. the road crews here, the storm is getting ahead of them and will make a lot of progress over the course of the evening. that is why they declared a state of emergency. a couple of small gents accidents here and there. for the most part, it's just your run of the mill major snowstorm. here is the good news. this is a friday. that gives the entire weekend to clean up, dig out as manyids are going to do, to go out on their sleds tomorrow and sunday. the big news at this point right now is there is a state of emergency in effect until further noti

as i said, monroe didn't cross the delaware in the same boat as washington. he crossed earlier with a small squad that landed on the jersey shore to the north of trenton and circled behind the town while washington landed with his troops on the river side below the town. now, what makes trenton so important is that the british almost won the war by christmas of 1776. their troops had overrun long island. thousands of american troops had deserted and the british had chased the remnants over the delaware. red coats were in sight. congress had fled to baltimore and began debating terms of capitulation to the british. the war was over unless washington could come up with a miracle. and he chose a young college student, lieutenant james monroe, to help make that miracle happen. they all crossed the delaware during a blinding snowstorm on christmas night. only six months after we had declared independence. in trenton, 3,000 mercenaries had spent the evening celebrating. and because of the snowstorm, they went to sleep without posting centuries. at dawn, monroe and

we have blizzard warnings in effect for delaware and south jersey and for the already beat up beaches of ocean city and the del mar area we indeed have a coastal flood warning in effect as the storm moves to and through the mid-atlantic. let's take a look at the totals and again. these have not changed. it is very good news. we are still looking at a significant weather event. 16 to 24-inches of snow. conversationally speaking i think we will be in the upper teens. there will be pockets of 20 plus inches particularly once you move off the south and west near the shan na doa valley. i want you to know there's a band of 18 to 16-inches snow that encompasses where you see the blizzard conditions. it has to do with visibility. in other words the power of this noreaster. it's going to be a significant winter weather event. >> mike hellgren joins us where the governor is preparing to address the state's plans for the storms. good afternoon, mike. >> reporter: good afternoon, we are waiting for him and several emergency management officials. we have had aped advanced warning. there are more

delaware is a small state. his name is castle. for the most part, he is a republican, but for the most part, he is on track with the policies that i believe in, except that he did support cap and trade, which i found to be a problem. i'm just opposed to cap and trade. the other side of the story is we have two -- every state does -- we have two senators. neither one of which i believe deserves re-election, because in every case that i've been in contact with them constantly, they support the current healthcare bill, which i don't. they support car check, which i don't. they support cap and trade, which i don't. so for the most part, by the way, i should quickly mention that in delaware, it's a very small state, around 800,000 people, but one thing that we do have here that i think many states don't have -- and this is on the positive side -- a local politician that is very responsive to the people. they come and visit you if you have a problem. i'm talking about local, like the cities and townships. host: you mean visit you at you

for ann arundel county extending into deep south maryland then into delaware and new jersey along the ocean's edge. we think winds will pick up enough to merit blizzard conditions. most of us will be at near-blizzard conditions. quick check of the inner harbor showing snow sticking to the dock. sunset 5:32. we are 31 at bwi marshall. snow doing a better job of sticking. 30 in easton on the eastern shore. it only goes down to the 20s. as the snow intensifies the wind picks up and we get into a near blizzard situation. with that in mind we want to get the lathes on what the storm is doing outside. >> it is almost like clock work within the hour before sunset if it hasn't been sticking all day, that was the only benefit we got today. as it came in the roads stayed wet. got pictures in. we got one from my old friend george jackson on the eastern shore in care line county. there is a higher water content which means we may not get one inch of snow like most storm. we may mix sleet with warmer temperatures at cloud lever. tomorrow temperatures take a nose dive. then we get lighter fluffier

this event could be lasting one and a blizzard warning for the southern part of delaware and into new jersey where the winds will be stronger there. right now the winds for us not too bad. as you can see calm. we do expect the winds to pick up in this part of the mid-atlantic region because we have the low pressure center headed in our direction. with the high to the north the pressure gradient will make it 5-15 miles per hour and gusting higher. what we're looking for is the snow to the south and west seeing a little bit of sleet possible to the southern most extreme. i don't think it's going to be a lack to the south and east. i think it will turn to snow later this morning into the early afternoon and the rest of the counties to the north it looks like plain snow for us. can you see lots of moisture coming in from the gulf of mexico. it's all coming our way and it's going to supply us with plenty of snow it looks like. it's high pressure sits to the north. ta will fly off to the east. the low pressure is going to take a more easterly track and noting the rain to the south and the w

along the delaware coastline and along the jersey day, those are red. that is a blizzard warning. the wind will get up to 50 miles an hour on the coast. these temperatures have been a little stubborn. we are staying basically at or above freezing in baltimore. that goes all the way up to western maryland. is not until you get to garrett county where the temperatures dropped to 20 degrees. it is holding up any decent accumulation of snow so far. we have set up a statewide view here. at the bottom of the screen, the green is replacing the white. it is creeping northward. the snow is changing over to rein in richmond. that area of rain is creeping northward. we have to keep an eye on that this evening. if we get any sleep mixed in with the snow, -- if we get any sleet mixed in with the snow, it could affect our snow totals. here's tom with more information on this story. >> you can see two areas of low pressure heading back to us. one is from the ohio valley and the other is the main storm hion the south carolina coast. the rain is pushing up into parts of

model, putting down a swath of very heavy snow from the panhandle of west virginia of into northern delaware. in the lighter pink shaded areas, that is where you go over two feet. lesser amounts where we expect more of a mix and maybe some rain in southern maryland and the lower eastern shore. for our region, 15-24 inches possible overnight with gusts over 40 miles an hour, antipater settling back to the 20's. the temperatures will not settle down much at all tomorrow. we could end up between 20 and 30 inches of snow, with lesser amounts down toward the bay bridge and onto the lower eastern shore and toward the coast. the forecast wraps up with a snowstorm that may become blizzard like at times. still breezy if not when the on sunday with a high of 29, a cold, dry monday, before the next storm arrives late tuesday into wednesday. it could produce some more snow in our area, with flurries lingering into thursday. >> some sad news for people in baltimore, the sweet tooth is closing. the bakery has been in business since 1921. they moved to the new location on chest that avenue in the 1990's. t

., of course into delaware and maryland. the blizzard warnings go into effect, not because of the intense itof the snow coming down. -- intensity of the snow coming down. but because of the winds. visibility, less than a quarter mile. and the winds gusting or sustained at 35 miles per hour or greater. now, as far as the snow amounts are concerned, we're still talking 18 to 24 irv be -- inches wide. some areas down toward d.c., especially now with the blowing snow. possibly between 24 and maybe 30 inches of snow. the snow is going to be again impacted by the winds. the wind the as we look at-- winds as we look at them, we're expecting peak gusts with the storm. we're talking from harford county and the northern tier of cecil county, all the way out into western maryland. and 40 to 50-mile-an-hour gusts. and 50 pile per -- 50-mile-per- hour plus gusts on the eastern shore. and that is why those blizzard warnings were in effect. we'll continue to tweak our amounts and the impact of the storm as it impacts maryland. and for now,

winter storm warnings up for delaware and new jersey. this is a coastal storm. it will impact our eastern counties the hardest with super high winter and wintery precipitation. we'll get in on the action here across the baltimore area. again, just rain moving up out of the southwest. the opening round, i guess you could say, not that this is going to be anything significant for if next few hours, but overnight things change. all this low pressure will be converging offshore and generating tremendous wind. forecast models have the center of the storm reaching very low pressure. meaning very high wind force. in fact, the low pressure area offshore may get into almost like a weak hurricane strength in terms of the wind it will generate. snow coming in overnight toward 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.blast of snow could be one to three inches. more north toward pennsylvania and philly area. a lot of moisture churning offshore. this whole system continues to build and get intense. over the thursday afternoon time period just snow showers. then snow we think we get another

bulk of the snow and it is light to moderate snow off to the east pushing off to the east, southern delaware seeing it, portions of southern maryland seeing a little bit of sleet as well but this is all pushing out. let's look at the satellite- radar, the big pictu for the eastern united states, the mid- atlantic. there is your storm system. it will be a quick mover. not dumping a lot of snow but enough to cause some problems in parts of the viewing area with, as we thought, the higher amounts north and west steeft. this snow not going to cause us a concern. that will remain across pennsylvania. won't be impacting us. snowfall totals so far, take a look. -- as we thought, the higher amounts north and west of the city. reston virginia, 5.0. martinsburg, 4.8 so right in that range there of snowfall. current temperatures around the region, our temperatures will be key today. they will move up, i think, into the low 40s which will allow for melting to go on. that will happen tomorrow as well. 32degrees in the district. baltimore, 30. temperatures in the 20s elsewhere. 19degrees in culpeper. here

., all of delaware could possibly see two feet of snow. the pink shading, pittsburgh, philadelphia, roanoke, richmond, we could see six to 12. new york city is up a little bit. we think they'll just be in the northern fringe, possibly three to six inches. north of new york city into new england will not be hit hard by this storm. philadelphia, we're calling eight to 12 for you. we mentioned baltimore and d.c. friends in the ohio valley, it is snowing pretty good from indianapolis to columbus. that's where it's getting colder and the snow is coming down. new computer projections project three to six inches, highest totals around columbus, ohio, where you'll be plowing up to a foot of snow come tomorrow. this is not just a huge storm but affecting a large area, contessa. the important thing, d.c., this could be one of their biggest snow storms all time. >> they've gotten walloped already this year. >> when this storm is over they'll have more snow than boston for the year. which is ridiculous. >> thank you for staying on top top of it, bill.

blizzard warning out there by delaware and on in through south central and southern new jersey. overall, we're expecting the snow to move in. it looks like it's getting close on the radar. the real range of the snow and precipitation on the west and bottom of the white line i had drawn. it does look impressive here, at least around the potomac. it will feel like it wants to do something when you step outside. it may look like it at 31 in baltimore and 30 in easton. we're aiming for temperatures to warm into the mid-30s when it begins between 10:00 and 2:00. it will mix with sleet, maybe some freezing rain. that will cut down on some of our totals. by tonight, it goes back to all snow and we talk about how much you do expect in your backyard. here's the latest on traffic with kim brown. >> reporter: thanks, justin. this is probably one of the areas we're seeing the most congestion. as you see it's not much at all. volume is lighter than normal on the west side at liberty road headed towards the route 70 interchange. 95 southbound through the white marsh boulevard area down toward

blizzard warning for delaware and new jersey. that is because of the stronger winds that will whip up as the storm really cranks off the coast, especially by tomorrow morning into tomorrow afternoon. we'll run down how much we expect to get in just a little bit, but watch the storm really qoming in a couple of pieces here. a very large storm extending from the florida panhandle all the way up through northern iowa and the northern central plains. two areas of low pressure merging through branches of the jet stream which translate to heat and sleet. that's why i think we get that wintry mix that shows up on the radar that morning. that's virga. the radar sees it from the clouds and doesn't reach the ground. we look for it to begin around 10:00 and 11:00 and 2:00. temperatures are above freezing which means snow and sleet at the onset. heavy sleet will waste a few hours of potential snow then it goes back to snow overnight. more coming up. here's kim with traffic. >> reporter: thanks, justen. northbound lanes of 95 an incident off
