one of the stranger campaigns in this congressional election year, the campaign of senate candidate alvin greene, the man who came out of nowhere to claim a primary victory in south carolina before most people knew who he was. and after his first public appearance, jeff greenfield tells us it's still not very clear. >> let's reclaim our country from the terrorists and the communists. >> reporter: on sunday night, alvin greene, the democratic nominee for u.s. senate in south carolina did something no one had ever seen before-- he actually appeared in front of voters at an n.a.a.c.p. event in his hometown of manning. >> parents need to take a more active part in their child's education. democrat alvin green shocked the political scene by winning south carolina democratic primary, he has only given a few media interviews and meet beat a candidate that had a full backing of the democratic party. in november, he faces jim demint. and despite being arrested on felony charge on selling photos on the internet. >> i'm the best candidate in the united states senate race here in south carolina. i'm also the best choice for the image award next year. alvin greene made his first public campaign speech today. he spoke about the usual issues, jobs and education. but al green is not an ordinary condition. he's not just a political unknown, he is an unemployed military veteran facing felony obscenity charges. however, he is the democratic nominee for senator from south carolina. he apparently has no campaign organization. he has also suggested that south carolina can solve its economic problems by selling action figures of himself. last night, a south carolina minor league baseball team handed out alvin greene bobbleheads at the game. however, not everybody is treating this campaign as a joke. so, we're going to bring in our senior washington editor rick klein. rick, greene is up against the republican senator jim demint, who is a powerful conservative incumbent. this seems like a huge mismatch, right? >> that's exactly right. and jim demint, there was no chance of democrats defeating him even before greene emerged on the radar screen. democrats hoped that demint would win quietly. as long as

he's being challenged bay a totally unknown, unemployed guy named alvin greene. somehow this guy, with no campaign, no advertising, won 60% of the vote. they think he won because his name appeared first on the ballot. he's got no job, no organization and no plan but he's the democratic nominee. one of his ideas to boost the economy was to have companies make action figures of him. seriously. and he told "time" magazine he believes he should be their person of the year. but today, today he made what i think was his first ever speech. >> we need better education for our children. alvin greene literally came out of nowhere to win this nomination last month and he did so without making a single stump speech. over the weekend, though, he broke his silence at this school behind me and now says he's ready to tell the people of south carolina why he should be their next senator. he's running as the quintessential outsider. yet suddenly, if not remarkably, finds himself very much part of the "in" crowd. fielding calls from media outlets around the country, all trying to find out who in the world isal vin greene? an unemployed and unlikely 32-year-old who is now the democratic candidate for the u.s. senate in south carolina. >> i really want to just make sure that i get my message across to folks. and i'm the best candidate in this united states senate race in south carolina, and that i have real plans for jobs, education and justice. >> reporter: all this follows greene's stunning democratic primary victory in june. >> hard work. >> reporter: but you did no work. stunning because greene held no rallies, ran no ads, and gave no speeches until his first this past weekend.
