today the pacific gyre is often referred to as the great pacific garbage patch. >> jimmy hoffa's head. >> reporter: with most of the plastic broken into tiny pieces, the garbage patch can't be seen from the air. much of the debris floats a few feet below the surface. scientists don't know its exact size. but some estimates place it at twice the size of texas. mary crowley charters yachts out of sausalito, california and has spent nearly 40 years on the open ocean. after first learning about the garbage patch, she knew which direction to point her ship. in 2008 crowley founded the bay area-based project kaisei, a non-profit group established to study the scale of marine debris and its impacts on the environment. >> mid ocean is kind of a beautifully unique area. you know, could be 1700, 1800 feet, 2,000 feet deep. it's this beautiful blue. and then you look closer and you see this confetti-like plastic. >> reporter: in august 2009 crowley spearheaded a month-long scientific expedition to study the debris. the 151-foot "kaisei," whose name means ocean planet in japanese, was joined by a

welcome to our viewers across the nation, including the pacific time zone. i'm lynn berry. today we begin with tragedy in pakistan. early this morning a passenger jet crashed near that nation's capital. the airblue plane flying from karachi to islamabad and was carrying 152 passengers as well as six crew members. an nbc producer near the crash has been told by a pakistani official there are no survivors. the cause of the crash is not yet known. that plane was attempting to land in severe weather. >>> elsewhere last night the house approved a measure that handed president obama a $33 billion boost for the troop surge in afghanistan. the measure made it through, despite democrats divided on the stripped down version and a recent top-secret leak exposing classified details about the controversial war. nbc's brian mooar has our report. >> reporter: despite a stalled economy, a growing budget gap, and a looming election, members of congress wrote another big check to pay for the war in afghanistan, but not without some public hammering at first. >> i cannot look my constituents

. >> the asia-pacific island cultural center receives help from the census but our commission. john mean today to talk about in off festival is the executive director. welcome. i understand this is the 13th annual festival. can you tell me the name? >> the name is a celebratory name. we also celebrate what we call the asian-pacific islanders as well, in terms of culture, experience, and multidisciplinary arts. >> the festival is actually very wide-ranging. you have 16 venues, and how many different performing arts centers? >> we have over 85 artists participating, 16 venues, 21 events. there are over 15 groups that are performing. >> there recently kicked off at the beginning of may and will continue through june 13? correct? >> that is correct. unlike in the past years, we have had to expand the festival because there has been so much activity and so many people want to be part of the celebration. we're very honored and pleased to have the festival going all the way into june. >> we're kind of coming in on one of the groups. >> francis is one of the pioneers of the asian ameri
