we have 450 projects throughout san francisco. we have incentivized wisely over the counter permits so people can navigate the bureaucracy, a $98 fee, flat fee. we are developing projects in this city with minimum requirements for lead building standards. in fact we have a proposal that i will be presenting in front of our san francisco board of supervisors that says you want to build a commercial structure in excess of 50,000 square feet, you've got to provide minimum lead standards of construction. the reason we are doing that is we create an incentive a year ago to do that and everybody in order to get ahead of the queue in terms of the planning process is jumping in saying that's a no brainer of us because time matters more than anything else. so we are going to require it as a base line for doing business in the city and county of san francisco. that follows what we had already done and that is say we're going to spend the taxpayers money, we have got to provide those lead standards in terms of our libraries, reconstructing o

what an exciting day for san francisco. when we can all come together to be reminded of our traditions and the courage of our first responders. i'm so excited to be here with the fire chief. he's been remembering how the fire department helped us out of the earthquake some few years before coit tower was built and also of course with our fire chief remembering the important role that the first responders play. telegraph hill has always been a place that our citizens gather in san francisco, the beautiful vantage points over which christopher column buss looks out. as an italian american i take special pride in the fact that columbus is here. and over the years i took my children and more recently visitors and members of the congress to telegraph hill to see this incredible monument to love of san francisco. to see the murals inside which are a tribute to the working man. some find that controversial. i don't and i think it's time to remind ourselves of that at this time and to remember that those were projects of the w.p.a.

near 80 in livermore. 76, san francisco. but as we head towards the weekend, temperatures will start to climb on up. we'll have a look at that in the seven-day forecast in afew minutes. >>> right now a soaring tower is taking its place in the iconic skyline. christie smith is live with a major piece of the bay bridge puzzle. still going to be quite a sight. >> reporter: it is. the new eastern span of the bay bridge has been coming together for a quite a while now, but when you drive over the old bay bridge and look at it for $6 billion, what you're looking at is basically a flat roadway. not real impressive, at least at this point. but that's about to change dramatically. the new tower is going in, and if you can see over there, there's what looks like white boxes. that is part of it. so things are going to change dramatically, a little bit later today, about 12:30. it will centerpiece is taking shape. what caltrans is calling the signature of the bridge and one of the most challenging bribing ever built. the first piece is

right here to the streets of san francisco. as big and great as this new street is for san francisco -- and it is great -- it just yet another chapter in an ongoing narrative about our open space and the public realm in in san francisco from street fairs to outside festivals to extensions of the sidewalks to sunday streets, and any of you here this past sunday just a few blocks down for sunday streets in the mission knows what i'm talking about. but from sunday streets to the new pavement to parks, to the major street reconstructions like this, there is a narrative that has a theme of opening up our public realm for a much broad are use. rethinking our public realm and making it accessible to all modes of transportation, to all people and more enjoyable for people to be in as opposed to just pass through. we are about to take a big step in terms of institutionalizing some of the thinking behind the transformation of our open space and you are going to hear about that today. but none of this from the pavement to parks to sunday

it is the lowest density zoning that we have in san francisco. that's what's been approved and what the planning staff is recommending. i also have copies of the letters from my neighbors, which is a large neighborhood organization in the area that endorsed the project back in october of 2009. i'll pass a copy of that up for you. the issue of sound and health and welfare, it is true these homes will be right adjacent to the freeway. they have been designed with that issue in mind. you will recall a few years ago the supervisors sponsored legislation to require ventilation of homes adjacent to freeways and other traffic barriers so the air inside the homeds is pure -- inside the homes is pure identified -- purified before it goes into the homes. the negative electric legislation to this project that was approved and an appealed discusses in a fair amount of detail that the interior air quality in these homes will be safe because of the ventilation system that would be built into the homes. what's on the overhead now is a cross-section of the proje

city hall has to work harder for the people of san francisco. we want government to work well for the city of san francisco. that miller is one of the great features and accents of san francisco. that is the indigenous resource in. one of those happens to be administered by our recreation and parks apartment. our recreation and parks department has that particular challenge. it has the noble goal of providing whether one is poor or impoverished or affluent in san

at about 76% of recruits coming into sfpd not living in san francisco or come from san francisco. it is almost as high with the fire department. when we look at the relationship, i think, between recruitment to our public safety sectors, and ask why there is not more, i think, hunting and recruiting of people locally, the answers are, i think, we would love to do so, but there's not much of a focused strategy to make that happen. unfortunately, as of the national downturn economically, we have now seen that the unemployment rate for 16 to 19 year-old literally is over 40%, the highest since world war ii. that is pretty much minute here in the city and county of san francisco. we also know that 1000 police officers and 500 firefighters will be retiring or could be retiring within the next five years. we would like to see -- there to be some strategy in place that helps, i think, replete the number of personnel that we may be losing, but also benefits in the fact that these are san franciscans who would really like to work for the city and county of san francisco, who know the commu

i'm director of the archdiocese of san francisco, and i have come to speak on behalf of the archdiocese against the proposal. the archdiocese in the city of san francisco is probably responsible for about a third of the poor and vullnerable in the city. we are sincerely committed to that. in terms of working for families in the city, archbishop and myself and the cardinal have worked in partnership with san francisco organizing project for many years to keep affordable housing at the top of the city's agenda because some of the concerns that have been expressed here are our concerns, too. our parishes, the 44 parishes in the schools, our schools, our high schools, all need families to stay here, so we're very invested in keeping families here. we're very invested in child care. we have about a dozen child care facilities. we are opensed to this item because we feel it is a layer of bureaucracy that is not needed and will, in fact, create a disincentive for people to try to build child care facilities. two blocks away from the present one at st. joseph's we are intending to put in a chil

francisco and really by that i mean the archdiocese of san francisco for so many years encompassed of north earn california. the reardon who succeeded archbishop allemany what was his role. >>> he built st. patricks seminary which opened 1898. he tried to open a seminary because he wanted a native clergy but had great difficulty getting an order of priests to run the seminary. reardon succeeded and then also built the new cathedral down on gary and got dedicated in 1891. >> that is not there any more. >> it burned down in 1962 in a dramatic fire and that lead to our beautiful new modern cathedral, dedicated 1970/71. >> i was trying to figure out a way of organizing this. certainly one of the largest events in the history of the area was 1906 earthquake. >> yes. >> how did the church respond to that? >> it was pretty devastated by that earthquake. many of the churches were just completely leveled particularly in the seminary. st. patricks, st. francis the two oldest were completely destroyed. the church did what a lot of other churches did they set up relief stations and assisted peopl
