berkeley photographer dorothy alang. these give you an idea of just how apalling bad the great reh depression was. the best we have, as well as movies, it's difficult to million how it was. we tend to look back through the safety net, which was created by the new deal. it was very difficult for young people to understand a time when there was no social safety net. when you lost your job, within a short period of time, you lost your home, food, everything. you were out on the street and your family broke up. it was an apalling time. one tow which some people would like us to return. here's a guy himself, that's actually a light bounce off of fdr roosevelt. this was his chakra. this was march 4th, 1933. he made the statement and he made it, i didn't understand a long time. the point i was making, people were terrified. because it seemed like the economy had no bottom and the banks were going down and there was no federal deposit dollars. so imagine a time when we actually had a president who told us we should be courageous

and then one at north berkeley. public hospitals. clinics and sanitary. as well as polio people did get tuberculosis. remember that counties were strapped for funds. so the wpa gave it to them. children got health care. we were headed for a national health care system. we treat things differently now. essentially, what we have of med-cal is going to be slashed true. as an environmentist, i am opposed to this. they laid concrete in southern california. without which, a good deal would be washed into the ocean. the ccc and the wpa workers were trained for disaster relieve. we didn't have to rely on the national guard. these kinds of things wouldn't be as disastrous. we need a new wpa. they are walking over the sidewalks, which is wpa. this was a demonstration outside of dianne feinstein's office. and demanding it not be torn down. the new deal moved in and gave rural areas water and electricity. this is one in modock county and we have cheaper electricity. and then, there were sustainable communities, people think they are discovering this at this time. thi

berkeley police are looking for a gunman that happened in the ashby bart station sunday morning. a 35-year-old man and his fiance were walking home after a party when two men tried to rob them. one shot and killed the man and punched the woman. detectives are hoping someone saw the crime or has information that could lead to a better description. the two robbers took off in an older two-tone suv. >> the lawyer for a berkeley graduate held in iran, his attorney said he has been in contact with the family of sarah shored and the swiss embassy in iran. iran said they would release her as a sign of compassion to mark the end of ramadan and quickly reversed the division. her lawyer said she could be released in a few days if her bail is paid. it's been more than a year since iranian authorities arrested her and two other berkeley students. the two friends and shored were accused of being u.s. cries and they said they accidentally crossed into the country on a hike. a trial date could be set for the two men in the coming weeks. >>> a bay area thoroughfare getting a face-lift and you se
