"i represent youth and i represent women" she says. . >> reporter: in brooklyn, under the manhattan bridge, is a gift shop called stewart/stand. it's a family-owned business-- penelope runs the store, while her brother-in-law paul is in charge of the wholesale division. though it's only september, the two are already finalizing holiday hiring decisions. >> i would suggest probably gathering resumes now and seeing what sort of caliber people we can bring in. >> reporter: business was suprisingly strong in august, part of the reason the company plans to add more seasonal workers than last year. >> i think it's definitely due to the increase in tourism to this neighborhood. we are right next to the brooklyn bridge, there's a lot of different restaurants and places to go to down here. >> reporter: the picture from larger retailers is also fairly optimistic. the hay group, a consulting firm, surveyed major chains and found 83% plan to hire the same number or more seasonal workers. just 17% plan to hire fewer workers. but competition for seasonal retail positions is expected to be tougher than last year. given the nation's high unem

if you go to youtube there's video from brooklyn a guy took from his roof. it looked like a shelf cloud blowing in. reports of 100-mile-per-hour wind gusts from a buoy in new york harbor. so very impressive stuff. now also impressive this morning, getting to the weather maps, hurricane karl. mexico will get ravaged today. anyone in the path of what is now a major category 3 storm. veracruz on the southern edge of the eyewall. that would be somewhere in the worst damage in and around veracruz. that's a very busy, big city. also a couple of cities just off to the west of that that could get nailed. this could go up to a rare category 4 landfall. this is a huge event even in the history of this area of the coastal. as far as right where the impact is at landfall, that's a pretty rural area. as long as it stays this far north, the damage shouldn't be devastating. any shift to the south and veracruz will get hit hard. no matter what, they'll see some damage. just depends on how close that path gets. the other storm throughout is hurricane igor. this storm has wea

this blazes up and cruises across new york harbor and queens and brooklyn. that is the cell that may have produced a tornado. the more i-reports we look at it looks like it was probably a tornado. the national weather service is out there surveying the damage to determine that for a fact. from all we have seen, it was nasty storm. that front has gone through. these two fronts were protecting us from igor. are they fast enough and strong enough to move igor away from bermuda? that's the question. this one, bay the way, is fairly chilly, bringing in fall-like air. we are in a busy hurricane season. this is hurricane karl, category 3 storm. it is making landfall right across a cro cross mexico. the winds from this are smaller than igor but will slam into the mountains there and head to mexico city and by the time it gets to that el vague, typically they don't have punch. there will be mud slides. igor, winds of 120 miles an hour. this has not moved much at all. we are still looking for it to be very close if not directly over bermuda during the day on sunday as
