carl cameron is live in blooming ton with more on this. tell us what is happening in del care. >> reporter: it's all about the nomenclature, let's quote jon scott. christine o'donnell has got even a lot of attention from the tea party express. she has run for office a number of times and has not had success. she is up against mike castle who has been fixture in the party for 40 years. christine o'donnell calls her a fiscal conservative. and the tea party express does back her. but so does sarah palin which is a big, big, deal. if you look at the division in the tea party it explains some of christine o'donnell's problems, while she has sarah palin's support she does not have the support of the tea party at large. dick army who is the chairman of freedom works which is an organization that is closely and very influential lee involved with the tea party movement declined to back her. she's had personal money problems and that seems to have undermined a lot of her support today, so it really matters about the nomenclature, she's tea party exp

chief political correspondent carl cameron is live from dover, delaware. after beating the established candidate, the establishment candidate, you might say, mike castle last night, the gop is now deciding to get behind o'donnell? how did that happen carl? >> reporter: jon, you put your finger on the pulse of something that's unfolding. a staff aide suggested there was going to be no money for christine o'donnell because there wasn't enough bang for the buck in republicans in spending money on her when in fact they've got at least ten other republican candidates knocking on the door of democratic pickups and they're in a better shape and more competitive in the polls than o'donnell is against democrat chris coons. today the chairman of that committee, john cornyn of texas, and his aides, having spent the last one # hours getting peppered with phone calls, they will give the maximum donation to o'donnell's campaign of $42,000. that is a big development in o'donnell's favor. this morning when i spoke to her, she hadn't yet from cornyn and was at that time ex

carl cameron is in the town of sitzville, virginia. this race was not expected to be this tight and now why is it one of the closest races in the country? carl, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is a petri dish of what's happening, west virginia now perhaps more than anywhere else is going through what way get determined and called the obama effect. governor joe manchin is tremendously popular in this state, as governor, his approval ratings are in the mid to high 60s and he would easily be reelected governor had he chosen to do that, but with the death of bob byrd essentially forced his hand and now they're having a special election to fill his seat. john racy has run for office three times before in this state, twice for senate in the paand each time come up short. this time, however, the polls suggest this race is going to go right down to the wire, the latest from the public policy institute, a democratic leaning poll, suggests that it's a tossup but raese has a tiny lead and across the state it's the obama agenda and the

our chief political correspondent carl cameron live tonight in pasadena. carl, barbara boxer has been a fixture in california politics for decades and fiorina is pretty new at this whole thing. this smells of tea party. >> that's right. tea party was involved in the primary helping fiorina get going and they have continued with her in the general election helping energize the republican vote here but the tea party movement in california is very spread out and there's lots of different groups and she makes the point that it's not all the groups behind her and she sort of breaks them apart. as far as barbara boxer, the democratic incumbent is concerned, it makes a very, very loud choir of critics who say after three terms in washington, she has proven herself ineffective and it's time for her to go because she's par of the democratic agenda that the tea partiers and republicans say is blowing the deficit and driving the economy deeper into a ditch. >> i didn't get to hear it but i'm told there's a radio debate that got kind of lively between the two of them.

martha: carl cameron live in the state capitol, dover, delaware. wow, this was an interesting night, talk to me a little bit about how things look on the ground, because the g.o.p. in delaware says they will not back her and they said, you have sarah palin, you don't need us. >> reporter: right, well, listen, the national republican senatorial committee last night said they were not going to give her a dime and it was going to be up to sarah palin and the tea party express to fund christine o'donnell and they said, today, look if she gets momentum we'll see what happens and the republican national committee said we congratulate her and have two victory offices in delaware that will help all the republicans a candidates and she can benefit from that but they will not come up with more money for them and they don't have that cash to spend in the r.n.c. anyway and to say delaware republicans were stunned by this might be a g.o.p. establishment spin and the truth of the matter is, it has been a dead-even tie here in the polls, and, we have been reporti

carl cameron reported on that, just yesterday. state of illinois, this is the former seat of president obama, and, the state of illinois, this is one republicans would love to win, but, they are dead even. giannoulias and kirk are dead even, and, it is too close to call and this is the president's home state. and we find it in our polling, 46% disapprove of the job he is doing, what is going on, in the land of lincoln? >> well, look at that percentage for the green candidate, that tells you something, right there, 7% for the green candidate and i have seen other polls in the low double digits, for the green candidate and essentially the green candidate i think is absorbing some of the votes, people who don't like either candidate, but it is disproportionately hurting the democrats. look, if the republicans can win illinois and they are ahead now in both the governorship and slightly ahead in the senate seat, again that is a strong indicator for what is going to happen, november 2nd. bill: we will watch that, one more to note here,

carl cameron went out to seattle washington. good morning out there. what is happening that has made it so close in this state. >> reporter: what has happened is that the republicans across the country have found themselves short of the ten seats that they want to pick up from democrats in order to win the majority, this one in washington. right now they can see about 7 or 8 pick ups perhaps. one of the ones they are looking for is here in washington state where the three-term incumbent patti myrrh see is in a tough race with dino rossi. myrrh -- murphy is a low key senator, she is number 4 in the democratic leadership, which means she is one of the real front line people pushing the obama and democrat's agenda. that makes her vulnerable when the republicans are making such hay by beating up on the democrats on the agenda and an opportunity for dino rossi. he's run for governor twice before, lost the closes race ever for governor and he's been polling very, very strong. washington has sort of a quirky situation. their primary was back in august. it's a
