and so, 7 1/2 years later, dan harris returns to baghdad with a simple question -- was the war worth it? and what a difference, in what he heard seven years later. >> reporter: it was amid the ink-stained giddiness of iraq's first democratic elections that we first met this schoolteacher. >> this mark means my whole life. >> reporter: over the subsequent years, as iraq descended into sectarian madness, i interviewed her several more times, and she remained relentlessly upbeat. why are you optimistic? what gives you this hope? >> because i love my country. >> reporter: today, she's a newly wed. can i see the ring? >> yes. >> reporter: very nice. good job. things may be good in her personal life, but as american troops leave, while the iraqi government is mired in political paralysis, her view of the future has changed. >> dark one. i see a dark one, really. >> reporter: you see a dark future? >> yes. >> reporter: if the americans leave, it will be a dark future? >> yes. >> reporter: but she says that dark future is still better than the past under saddam. looking back, was it worth it

here is dan harris. >> reporter: it is a key chapter in "the greatest story ever told." as portrayed in the movie, "the ten commandments," the bible says the israelites, when fleeing egypt, got stuck between the pharaoh's army and the red sea. on moses' command, the waters parted, allowing the israelites to escape. enter carl drews, a software engineer for the national center for atmospheric research. he says, at long last, he's discovered an explanation. >> the exciting thing is that there is a scientific basis for this 3,000-year-old story. >> reporter: he used old maps and satellite data to build this computer model, which shows that when a strong wind blows out of the east, all night long, just like it says in the bible, the water is pushed back, leaving a muddy patch that somebody could walk across. and when the wind dies down, the water rushes back in. >> it shows the body of water splitting around the point of this peninsula and then dividing on both sides. the crossing is open for four hours. the crossing is three kilometers long and four kilometers wide. so, the

dan harris is on his seventh trip to iraq since the start of the war, and he was with the u.s. troops in baghdad today. >> reporter: the combat mission may technically be over, but for anyone who thinks the danger is over, consider that there have been 560 ied explosions in iraq in just the past month. >> be aware of two ieds near a house on the main road. >> reporter: do you feel like the war is over? >> we're combat troops. we're still here. we've still got a job to do. the names change but the mission's pretty much the same. >> reporter: you don't feel like combat is done? >> not at all, sir. >> reporter: it is still dangerous here. but it is also, in many ways, a whole new war. u.s. forces now need iraqi permission to arrest or kill a suspected terrorist. and it is the iraqis, not the americans, who are increasingly on the front lines. while americans hang back, even needing an iraqi escort to drive through any major city. what are the rules? if you get shot at, do you have to wait for a senior iraqi officer to say it's okay for you to shot back? >> no, an american soldier

so, we asked dan harris to tell us the most vivid things he saw on this first day of iraq's new life. >> reporter: the thing that struck me most powerfully today came from the understated defense secretary, robert gates, who was asked about whether the war was worth it. balance over time, i think, remains to be seen. >> reporter: remains to be seen. >> the united states and our allies have prevailed. >> reporter: what a stark contrast to that swashbuckling, and now infamous, photo-op from george w. bush. the lack of chest-thumping today, a reflection of both future uncertainties, and the enormous costs of this war. the second thing that struck me today was covering this change of command ceremony inside one of saddam's former palaces. the gaudy creation of a megalomaniac now populated by crisp, businesslike american servicemen and women. it's amazing for me to see how lived-in this place is now by americans. there are sand bags all over the place. they use the second floor as offices. they even hold their most important ceremonies here. and finally, we noticed something new out here o

dan harris reports now from new guinea. >> reporter: if you want to get a real close-up look at what's known as the ghost of the forests, one of the most rare, beautiful, and elusive creatures on earth, the tree kangaroo, you have to climb way, way up into a towering tree. >> then one guy will climb up close to her, and he'll make noise so that she'll come down. >> she'll jump? >> yes. >> reporter: the tree kangaroo and the man trying to scare her down are so high up that we can barely see them from the ground. >> she's going to try to get away. okay, okay. there she goes. >> reporter: she jumps, free-falls right out of the tree. >> there we go. >> reporter: it may be 100 feet to the ground. >> easy. easy. she's big. >> reporter: before we tell you how this turns out, here's how we got here. we have choppered into a cloud forest in the mountains of papua new guinea. our guide is lisa daybeck, an american biologist who has dedicated her life to saving the tree kangaroo. >> just be really careful. there's holes. >> reporter: she first saw these animals 20 years ago at a zoo in the u.s. >

dan harris has the story. >> reporter: friday night after throwing his second touchdown pass, senior quarterback reggie garrett of west orange high school in texas collapsed on the sidelines. garrett appeared to have suffered a seizure and was unresponsive. rushed to the hospital, he was later pronounced dead. >> just a big loss. everybody's going to be -- it's a tragedy. >> reporter: what isn't clear is if the seizure may have been a pre-existing condition which was never flagged as being severe. garrett's death will now be investigated. according to the cdc, high school athletes account for an estimated 2 million injuries, 500,000 doctors' visits, and 30,000 hospitalizations annually. this past friday, 16-year-old antonio rovas collapsed on his high school track, running a routine drill. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead of apparent heat exhaustion. and last week, hayward dennison of central catholic high school in oregon scored the winning touchdown. moments later, dennison felt his heart racing. >> i got back up and i was trying to breathe a lot more. >> r
