the president is attending a dinner for pennsylvania democratic senate hopeful joe sestak. chief political correspondent carl cameron tells us sestak is embracing his early conflict with the white house. >> reporter: the president arrived to support democratic congressman joe sestak despite having opposed him in the may senate primary against republican turned democrat arlen specter. sestak courted latino voters and cast his feud with the administration as helpful, not harmful because it prove his independence from the president. >> everyone knows the washington establishment of the democratic party didn't want me in the race.

at that point joe sestak -- live tv, jenna, sorry. downtown philly, sometimes the fire department has to protect the masses. at that time joe sestak did the unthinkable, he defeated the incumbent democratic senator for re-election, arlen specter, who hadn't been a democrat very long. folks will remember he'd been a lifelong republican and quit the party in order to avoid a primary against none other than pat toomey. pat toomey is the republican nominee, and he is currently leading joe sestak in the polls. so awkward, indeed, and republicans and partisans are delighted to point it out because the president finds himself campaigning for someone whom he did not want to win the nomination and, frankly, pennsylvania is an open question as to whether or not the president can help joe sestak all that much in the first place. the keystone state's lost about 87,000 jobs since the stimulus passed, unemployment is north of 9% here, it went up between july and august, and there is some concern that the president's persona politically can be a pro

the joe sestak price range goes up to $2400. for the dnc fund-raisers they start at $10,000 and go up to $34,400. that dnc convenient is supposed to raise $1 million, they expect. having the president headline fund-raisers is all about trying to rev up the democratic party base. we heard former president bill clinton say on "meet the press" this weekend if the democrats can shake voters out of their sense of an think, they'll do fine against republicans in november. that's what these events are all about. what we're likely to hear the president make many of the same arguments he's been making lately, the economy's on the right track, sure, there's still a ways to go in terms of reducing unemployment numbers and things like that but he'll defend steps the administration has taken on health care, financial regulatory reform, helping car companies and argue we're on the right track. dimming voters have to get out, get excited and keep republicans from turning back the clock. at the congressional black caucus event over the weekend

in pennsylvania, former republican congressman pat toomey leads joe sestak 49% to 44%. wisconsin republican ron johnson leads three-term incumbent russ feingold, 51 to 45. in colorado, republican and tea party candidate, ken buck leads first term incumbent michael n bennet 49-44. tea party darling christine o'donnell runs far behind the democratic chris coons. that's a 16-point gap. let's go to mark. what do you make of all of this. >> ali, what the common thread is between all of the polls you cited. mike castle, the congressman here in washington, d.c. would have won that republican primary last week. had he won, our polls showed that he would be up 18 points right now over the democrat coons in delaware. we're seeing a double digit deficit for christine o'donnell. however, by and large, ali, as you said, very good numbers for republicans. they've had the opportunity for knocking off an incumbent. russ feingold first electioned in 1992. that would be a huge win up in wisconsin. they also have the opportunity of picking up that colorado seat which seemed to be turning
