the fire's affecting some schools in san bruno. the park school district says its elementary and middle schools will be closed today. also the district's special education site will be closed; however, cappuccino high school will be open and will offer grief counseling to any student. many members of the san bruno community have gathered to help out the emergency responders. mark matthews is live at bay hill shopping center on cherry avenue with the very latest from there. mark? >> yeah. this is a staging center for the red cross. you can see their big van. we're expecting city and fire officials come here. we've been watching trucks roll up to the scene. we're two miles from where it happened. videotape from those trucks, the latest convoy that rolled by looked like a dozen fire trucks and emergency vehicles that were heading into that fire scene. we have heard lots of resources are being sent in this morning. cadaver dogs, fire investigators trying to piece together what happened and get us a better look at what has happened. we

he is seeing fire still burning in san bruno. but firefighters do have the area, surrounded the area where 173 homes were damaged or destroyed last night. take a look at some of the truly spectacular and amazing devastating pictures that we have from the scene last night. according to pg&e, a 24-inch gas line blew about 6:15 in the evening. they don't know what caused it yet. it left a 15 foot crater behind and a lot of devastation. and when it blew it knocked out the nearby water main so when firefighters arrived to fight the fire, they had no water and they didn't have any water for 30 minutes. it had to be brought in in 500 gallon lots. they were shooting it off of trucks, off tanker trucks. last night we talked to some of the hundreds of people whose lives were changed in an instant. >> a big boom. a big kaboom and the house shook and i pulled the blinds up. it was like a -- just came up. >> i was in the kitchen. i thought it was a earthquake, like a lot of people. i looked out the window, and i saw what -- to me it was a fir

bruno in the event that there was an airplane or aircraft that had gone into san bruno. we fully staffed the airport. we have back up equipment, but these are large pieces of apparatus, and it is pretty incredible to me that within six minutes, we had units deployed in san bruno from the airport. six members from our department and three apparatus. shortly thereafter, we made the decision -- i'm here with my deputy chiefs -- to work with the department of emergency management. we certainly wanted to assist, but it is a chaotic time, so we did not want to self-deployed. with our partners at the department of emergency management, we reached out to san mateo county dispatched to offer our services. they took us up on our offer, and at 6:53, we sent a complement of three engines, a truck, a battalion chief, and assistant chief, safety chief. we directed them -- instead of going down the airport, we directed them to where there was staging. once we checked in, we were redirected up to the side of the explosion. many of our units were providing structural protection within 45

jenelle wang is live in san bruno. jenelle, ntsb investigators are also asking for the public's help. >> that's right, eric. i want to mention that 28 foot section, it's on its way to washington d.c. as well as other parts of that pipeline. they wanted to see if there's any failure in the welding or possibly in the torn metal. that's on its way to washington d.c. right now. meanwhile investigators are asking for three specific things from the public to help them with their investigation. number one, any amateur video of thursday's explosion or just video of that area itself. they want to know more about what the blast site looked like prior to the explosion. also if anyone noticed dying vegetation in the area. that may be a sign of a gas leak and if anyone smelled gas prior to the explosion, they want to know. >> i smelled it. it was once in a while, say three, almost four weeks ago. >> all i can tell you is that i've heard the same rumors. i haven't gotten any confirmation from pg&e that there's been any issues ups th

attorney's office, san bruno p. d. and the state contractor's licensing board and state insurance department and they're all saying pretty much the same thing: watch out for scams. there have already been some. now, the -- take a look at some video from yesterday. people just getting back into their red-tagged homes, warning about possible scams. these people may face scams and they're telling these people to use licensed contractors. there have been scams already. we mentioned the four people arrested. they went to the rec center saying that they lived in rentals in the affected area. the rentals burned down so they applied for and received i.d.'s. they took those i.d.'s to pg&e and various companies like old navy and started cashing in. >> essentially you would walk out with $1500 in gift cards and a free cellphone. >> and they did. >> and they did. >> they need to be locked up for a long time. they need some serious, serious punishment. that is just the lowest of lows. >> they may receive some serious punishment
