tom. >> tom: so draw the thread for us. how can investors be certain that a company's innovation leads to profit for the company and thusly to shareholders. >> if they get it right, consumers and other purchasers love what they have and keep buying. and the example is apple. they keep bringing out the great products. if you look at their numbers, profit was about $2 billion in 2006. and it is about $8 billion as of last year. the numbers add up, and the share price from 50 to 250 in that timeframe. >> tom: what is interesting about the list you brought along with you tonight is it is an non-technology list of innovators. beginning with wal-mart. innovation versus consumer spending. it is it consumer spending that cowbts at w.m.t.? >> i wanted to look at how innovation affects regular companies, like a retailer like wal-mart. the idea is wal-mart has gone green. the innovation factor is based on the top 50 most innovative companies. wal-mart rated very high because it is investing in sustainable effort. it is very ambitious,

welcome back to n.b.r. >> tom: welcome back back. >> same here, tom. thank you for having me. >> tom: so what makes you shed some of that bear skin from the springtime. why do you think stock prices can move up to these levels. >> we're taking a seasonality point of view, and here we are into the fall, and traditionally we look to buy any type of pullbacpullback for the september, october time. plus you have the election coming up in november. we just broke out of the trading range we've been in in the last three or four months. 1010 on the low end and the s&p up to the 1100, trading back and forth. we broke out to the up side here. i think overall, the market is telling us in the months ahead, i'm trying to make a multi-month forecast, and we're probably going to go higher. we have to be on guard, tom, because sometimes we get the sharp pullbacks in october, and this current rally is running out of steam on volume, even though it was very impressive today. i'm not flip-flopping on you, but watch the numbers. if you see a little reversal pattern in oct

. >> tom: so are older c.e.o.s more in demand these days? >> yeah, tom, we've seen a market increase in the demand for what we like to call seasoned c.e.o.s. in fact, there's a kind of a saying in the boardroom today that 60 is the new 50. >> tom: fair enough. and three factors have been driving this, according to your research. the complexity of the business, things are just very complicated out there. business is getting done at an accelerated speed and so much more risk. so what does a seasoned c.e.o. bring that perhaps new leadership and new ideas doesn't? >> yeah, well, the complexity of business is due to two things. one is the, you know, the rapid globalization that all companies are experiencing. and second reason is that the competition is getting much smarter. so seasoned c.e.o.s have tended to deal with those issues a lot more and therefore are capable of migrating pretty complicated seas. on the factor of speed, having been there a lot and seen and done and known what's right and wrong, you know, they can rely on their experience

we've been taking-- speakinging with tom smith of standard & poor's. >> tom: wall street is calling it "the september to remember". stocks surged this month for the best september in 71 years. the rally came despite mixed reports on the economy and light trading volume. for the month, the dow jumped nearly 8&, the nasdaq skyrocketed 12%, and the s&p 500 rose almost 9%. those indexes also moved higher during the third quarter. the dow gained almost 10.5% in the past three months. what happens next with stocks? market analyst scott sheridan of think or swim says it depends on what happens with the mid-term elections. >> i think when we get some clarity on direction in this market, and i think it depends on which of the two parties really gets most of the seats or more of the seats in that election. then, we'll know, i think, if we're heading further up or if we're going to head back down. personally, i think that the market has a lot more room to the downside than it does on the upside. >> tom: small investors have kept a close watch on the market's on the september to remember. but they
