forces joining the ninety's ethnic conflict on the side of a muslim population and bombing the capital sarajevo before more of clinton's visit to the balkans we're now joined from washington by. thank you for being with us this hour why do serbs oppose integration so much. well it's the issue of the war was fought over in the first place back in one thousand nine hundred two it was the attempt by the muslim leadership to create a strong central government it was the muslims who are not an outright majority in the country would be dominant and this is the issue that the war was fought over the inability of the three communities to actually have some sort of power sharing arrangement that they could trust each other each other and the muslims had pushed through the independence proposal unilaterally and had basically neglected the serbs and croats shove them off it aside and said this is this is our country now and the serbs and croats would have none of it and we had three and a half years of open warfare with a hundred thousand people dead and this is a very very significant issue in bosnia and

today in sarajevo, she met with the bosnian presidency. she held a town hall meeting with students and members of civil society. while she was in sarajevo, she dedicated a street where the new embassy compound is scheduled to open soon in honor of ambassador robert frazier who died outside of sarajevo in 1995. his widow and children attended the ceremony. in belgrade, she met with the president and the prime minister as well as the foreign ministers and defense minister. she will also meet with a civil society. over the weekend, there was a successful parliamentary election in kyrgyzstan. we congratulate the people of this country. they demonstrated that they are committed to selecting their government through peaceful and democratic means. the u.s. in close coordination with international partners to part number of efforts to discourage fraud, inform voters about issues and political parties. it will be crucial for leaders to come together to form a new government and then to began the hard work of forming an inclusive society. following

her message in sarajevo and belgrade has been the same. you have to overcome historic divisions. there are opportunities that present themselves in terms of integration and membership within the european union, integration and membership down the road with nato. there are responsibilities that they have to take now, 100 steps to add these existing divisions within the respective societies, moving to dialogue that in the case of serbia and kosovo, can ultimately, hopefully, lead to mutual recognition. we were successful working with the international community about 15 years ago, ending the conflict in the balkans. but we have not yet seen as much movement as we need to see in terms of the end of tensions within those societies in those respective countries. she was there to remind them that there are tremendous opportunities available. we have a keen and significant interest in the complete integration throughout europe. but there are steps that bosnia herzegovina and kosovo need to take if they are to take advantage of these opportunities. >> end of one of the party is is less c
