i'm andrea mitchell live in washington. president obama is in tokyo for a summit of pacific nations the final stop on his ten-day trip to asia. so far the trip has not produced the results the white house expected. the g-20 lined up with china against the u.s. on currency and deficit issues. the trip has been overshadowed by political problems at home like whether to extend the tax cuts. savannah guthrie is traveling with the president. >> reporter: the president has wrapped up his time here in seoul. the g-20 summit is over. the president held his concluding news conference today and got a lot of questions about the bush tax cuts, specifically whether he has already decided how to compromise. your senior adviser david axelrod comments that your compromise is to temporarily extend the bush tax cuts. is that the wrong interpretation? >> that is the wrong interpretation because i haven't had a conversation with republican and democratic leaders. here is the right interpretation, i want to make sure that taxes don't go up for

i'm joined now by andrea mitchell. andrea, we heard mik say the u.s. somehow wants to get china involved in this. the likelihood there? >> well, it's very problematic. stephen bosworth, the diplomat is trying to get the chinese engaged. they have not in the past. in march they did not. they found no evidence. this is undisputable that the north koreans launched this. the question is what will south korea do. do they feel they need to take some sort of military action? and if not, will china put pressure on pyongyang? and the other bigamistry is why did north korea do this? >> and we have 29,000 usz troops stationed in the region in south korea. the president recently visiting with some of those on veterans day. we heard mik say this could destabilize the region. what would it mean for our troops in south korea? >> we know they have 8 to 10 or 11 bombs already. new evidence that they have a very advancedn't plant. they showed him what he had. it wasn't a real inspection but he had the chance to tour the facility. so they are showing off and flexing thei

mitchell. andrea, how did various groups vote as we look at the numbers this day after? >> well, the president had reason to feel chastened today at that news conference, because as you look at the numbers and the voters, the coalition that elected him only two years ago really fell apart. let's look at independent voters. they voted for barack obama by 56-44% only two years ago. and this time -- excuse me, that was 56% to 38% only two years ago and a majority voted republican, 56% to 38% this time. it was two years ago, 52-44. so the independents really abandoned him this time around, the democrats. the youth vote, another big part of the democratic coalition, this time only 11% of them turned out. 18% of them came out to vote for barack obama. he went to college campuses, mtv, "the daily show," it didn't work. he couldn't inspire them. and older voters did turn out, but contrasted to two and four years ago, older voters in the last midterm split evenly. this time they were overwhelmingly voti
