let's talk about princess diana. it was very touching today that he said he used, he gave kate middleton the ring that was his mother's ring because he wanted his mother to be part of this. we know how close they were. you did the only interview with princess diana. what can you tell us looking back at that and her feelings for her sons and the terrible sadness that also goes with this that she didn't here to see this day. >> it's immensely sad. that engagement ring cost 28,000 pounds way back in 1981, around $44,000. it's a beautiful burmese sapphire. she wore it throughout her marriage to prince charles. but the reality was that she was brilliant naturally with children. that was her strength and skill. she was amazingly a jil with kids and adored her children. some of the most -- photographs are of those of her rushing toward her children having been away from them for a couple of days. i think for about a week. she was clearly very much in love with her children and they adored her. i think the fact he has given

diana didn't have the time. chef pushed into the deep end very soon and told to swim, and kate's had the time to be introduced to the royal family. more importantly, to the household. you remember there are 200 member of staff at buckingham palace and an entire household which surrounds the queen and prince phillip. so she's had to get used to all those faces, and that's a very important key to her future survival within buckingham palace. jon: what about the queen? obviously, you've got to have a good relationship with the queen, do you know anything about their relationship? >> yes, you have, and i've heard that the queen like kate very much. she's been embraced by the royal family. she's a very intelligent, very courteous and respectful young lady, and you have to be because your future mother-in-law is the queen of england and the head of our church and head of state all rolled into one. but remember, the queen a very good, kind christian lady, and she will welcome kate with open arm. jon: so many of us reme

you interviewed princess diana and knew her very well. are you struck by how composed -- maybe the years of waiting and that she's older than diana was at the time of her engagement, has helped this young woman with the transition? >> i dhithing you're right. in 1981, lady diana was 20 years old when she married prince charles. she had study archeology, ant o anthropology and history and he was settling into a career with the royal navy. the princess of whales, diana, was working part-time in a nursery. she'd never been to college. she had no experience of what was to come. what was worse, was her adolescent years were marked by trauma. she developed a series of psychiatric illnesses, bulimia, anorexia, depression. she'd also been through the divorce of her own parents. compare that with kate and william. they're both 28 at the moment. they'll be 29 when they get married. they've both been to the same university. they both actually studied on the same degree course, art history. they're coming into this marriage with a kind of shared expe
