the splendor is in port in san diego. but the process of securing that nearly 1000-foot vessel to the docks is still underway. it's going to take a couple of hours, apparently, maybe more than that, for the 4500 passengers on crew -- and crew to actually disembark after a three-day nightmare cruise. a fire knocked out just about anything that needed power on that ship or the ability to generate that power. let's talk about what's going on with don gill -- dawn gil, her son was on board that ship with his new bride kendall. it was supposed to be a honeymoon cruise. dawn, have you spoken to them about how that cruise turned out for them? >> i haven't spoken to them since they boarded the ship. jon: so they do have a gang plank now connected to the mainland. they've got people on board, going in to start the process of bringing the passengers off. they left from long beach, right? they were not intending to disembark in san diego oarks so they're going to have to get these folks all the way up to long beach from san diego. i

it's a story we're following from san diego. it looks like the cruise ship splendor is about to begin getting some of its passengers off that ship. the passengers, we understand, may be disembarking in the next few minutes here. you see them on the deck getting ready. they've got to get the gangways in place now. no electricity, so there is a different construction here that has to take place to get the passengers off that ship. but we understand they're making really good progress in a really speedy fashion here, so it looks like it may be happening sooner rather than later. you know the story at this point. there was a fire in the engine room, and the engines were dead, lost to the captain, so you had three days with very little electricity or none at all, and food supplies ran low. no working toilets for many of the passengers, and now it looks like that nightmare of a cruise is about to come to an end. let's take a break. we're back in a moment with the cnn edition. sarge: that's interesting. you know what makes me sad? you

. >>> in san diego federal authorities have discovered a tunnel that was being used to carry drugs from the mexican border into the u.s. it was the second tunnel they found this month. jonathan blum is here with a closer look where it is. >> reporter: it goes between a large residential neighborhood here in tijuana and a small warehouse district here in the city of san diego. let's go in for a closer look. basically what they did is put this tunnel between the closest warehouse to the border and some of the closest homes to the border. it was 2200 feet long, that's seven football fields long. nearly half a mile. it started out at a warehouse that was a couple of rows in then actually comes up in another warehouse that's next to the border here. it stops at two warehouses. the start of the tunnel is over here. they dug under empty fields and parking lots. this was a two story home in tijuana and the tunnel was actually hidden under the floor in the kitchen. it is an elaborate tunnel. it was used to smuggle thousands of pounds of marijuana. and authorities are boggled by how complex this

>> john blackstone in san diego, thank you, john. joining us on the phone is danny cole, a passenger aboard the carnival "splendor." good morning. >> hi. good morning. >> how are you all holding up? >> well, spirits are pretty high. we're happy to be getting off the ship pretty soon. >> i bet. let's go back to monday when this all began with the fire in the engine room. were you aware, danny, there was a problem. >> yes, the whole ship started to shake violently when it happened and, you know, as you can maj, everything in the rooms started rattling around and i'm pretty sure it woke up all the passengers. it certainly woke up me and my wife. >> were you scared? >> yeah, i -- well, i was definitely uncomfortable and then pretty soon after that happened, we started to smell smoke in our cabin and we're on the eighth floor so we're pretty far away from the engine room and i think the smell was a lot stronger on the lower decks. so, as soon as we smelled that, we jumped out of bed, threw our clothes on and thought, you know what, we bet

the team of tug boats gently guided the ship in to san diego's port this morning tugs have been slowly towing the ship from the waters off of mexico where it broke down on monday. for four days the almost 8500 passengers and crew have been without air conditioning, hot food and just about everything that runs on electricity. passengers are telling horror stories about bathroom facilities that didn't work for the first two days. >> people getting upset and frustrated by the toilet situation. couldn't flush and quite a big smell issue on the ship. >> reporter: there were two hour lines for food like spam and poptarts but despite the challenges, passengers say they pulled together. >> by and large, people have been really nice to one another and there's almost a camaraderie among the passengers because we are all going there the same ordeal. >> with no working elevators, carnival says getting all the passengers off the splendor could take hours. they promise to be ready with hotel an flight reservations for the passengers. >> we're going to be providing a variety of assistance once they d

quite a day here dockside in san diego. you can see that giant cruise ship behind me, going nowhere fast. but the passengers were sure in a hurry to disembark. at daybreak this morning, the splendor managed to look splendid as six tiny tugboats dragged the crippled cruise liner slowly into san diego bay. but aside from one lone jogger out for a few final laps on the track, the passengers looked like they couldn't wait to get off. the passengers are all gathered on deck. and we can hear shrieks of joy coming from the ship. they're no doubt looking forward to hot coffee, a hot shower and no more spam sandwiches. and they were clearly delighted to be on dry land again. >> we can beat anybody's bad honeymoon story. we got it beat. >> reporter: some celebrated with song. ♪ the power blew due to a smoke fire ♪ ♪ the toilets did not work ♪ our food was vegetables and fruit ♪ ♪ on the two-day return >> reporter: others with tearful reunions. >> we were worried. we knew they were okay, but just to hear her tell me she's

four long days after an engine room cut off power to a cruise ship, it will arrive in san diego. we have more on what things are like on board right now. >> reporter: new video shows the disabled carnival splendor slowly making its way to san diego. it will make it to port midday thursday and not a moment too soon for the thousands of passengers and crew members. >> you can tell some people are angry and frustrated. >> reporter: the frustration has been building since monday'sen gin fire -- monday's engine fire. they have been without hot water and hot food. >> they signed up for a great cruise vacation, and obviously, that's not what they received. >> reporter: the u.s. military airlifted spam, wearlt and pop tarts and have a crew on board. once the ship arrives in san diego, a carnival theme will meet them with their new travel arrangement. they'll mrs. get a refund for this trip and a free cruise in the future. as carnival officials paint a bright picture of conditions on board. >> we've had bands. we've had games. >> reporter: passengers are telling a different story. >> this

our reporter has the latest from san diego. >> at daybreak thursday morning, officials began the daunting task of maneuvering the disabled cruise ship into san diego's harbor. >> it will come through the channel in and get to the base in which is in front of the terminal. the woman never as necessary and bring it into the south side of the pier. >> the ship was surrounded and went to report. it has been a four-day nightmare for the 3300 passengers and 1100 crew members on board. the ship left long beach on sunday for a seven-day cruise on the mexican riviera. but on monday morning, and engine room fire left the ship disabled, without power. nauert -- no air-conditioning, no hot food, and no phone service by tuesday, a call was made for help and food and supplies were airdropped on to the deck. >> you wait in line. when you get the food, it is almost like a diet crews. >> by wednesday afternoon, cell phone service was intermittent. carnival supplied satellite phones for guests. passengers were finally able to call loved ones and talk about their ordeal. >> sabrina was actually woken up by
