[applause] >> i am mike smith. there is a leaflet that has been going around asking if you want to have your house demolished. my answer is yes. i will pull the plunger if need be. i am not a long-term resident here. i do not have all the wonderful benefits of rent-controlled, although i do believe in it. i pay $24 a month. i pay $2,400 a month. it looks nice from the outside but of hot water will not come on for five minutes. the pipes will rattle. other things are going on. it is too much for a plumber or anyone else to be able to fix it the way it exists now. tear it down. build a new one. i might as well be sending a christmas card to the plumber as many times as he is at my place. i am not the only one. rent-control is a great thing. i love it. it is wonderful for a lot of the people who have been here 56 years. i pay higher rent. i expect a little more with that kind of rent. there are a lot of people in here that are newbies, so to speak. they probably feel the same way i do. i wish i had been here 30 years.

christie smith is live in the east bay with more on what some of the people living there are facing. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. the timing couldn't be worse. some of these neighbors just had a water rate increase. now we are talking about a garbage rate increase of 14% for nearly 8,000 customers in eastern contra costa county. just last month 2,300 customers in bay point saw a 36% water increase approved by san francisco's bay regulators. neighbors there saying what you might expect, they can't afford to pay more with incomes flat. "the contra costa times" is reporting that 19% of bay point residents are below the poverty line. the increase would apply to customers in unincorporate rated brentwood, oakley, discovery bay and nightson. if approved the cost of a 96-gallon can would rise to to $35.85. a 32-gallon can would go to $32.85 a month. that could decrease in september if a new recycling system that the company wants is approved. the contra costa county supervisors are going to consider this increase on tuesday morning. reporting live in oakland, chris

lamborn: i appreciate the leadership of my colleague of representative chris smith and he is a leader in this area of life. all of us look up to him. mr. speaker, my heart breaks when i think about the children who are now a part of a missing generation, a generation whose contribution to society we will never fully know, a generation whose lives could be inspired their families, nation and world had they been allowed to live. our society discriminates against these human beings who should receive the same protections as other persons. not only does abortion strip the world of human lives but affects the lives of mothers, leaving them to deal with the emotional aftermath. i commend the work of pregnancy care centers that provide needed services. i mourn the 50 million american lives cut short and pray that god continues to heal those touched by this tragic practice. i will remain steadfast in the fight of the unborn. e deserves to live and protect the unborn. like the majority, i made good on a campaign promise and voted to repeal obamacare. there were many reasons for my vote to repe
