it's teen porn and mtv knows it is. but another person argued, better your kids are home watching "skins" than out doing drugs. another concern and scandal surrounding the show the age of the actors, several "skins" cast members are under the age of 18. despite huge ratings, the show is doing damage control. one of the 18-year-old actresses told hd net, "skins" deals with real teen issues. >> it's the way teenagers behave. especially, you know, in certain situations where you come from a home life where your parents don't really support you or listen to you. >> reporter: the parents television council is pressuring the show's advertisers. saying every single advertiser who sponsored the premiere of "skins is not only endorsing but glorifying teen alcohol and drug abuse. taco bell and gm already pulled their ads off the air and more may follow. mtv for now is standing by its new drama saying we are confident that "skins" will continue to connect with the audience it was created for. and that advertisers will take advanta

is mtv living up to responsibilities to the young viewers? >> you know, i'm a little concerned, frankly. they made a big deal about playing the show at 10:00 at night. but i think most 16-year-olds or 17-year-olds are still up. this is a show about teenagers. and it's pretty clear it's for teenagers. and it does go pretty far. >> it goes pretty far. but there's a debate whether it's realistic or hyping everything, sensational. >> i think it's terribly important that we let our kids know that this is, in fact, not the norm. i think one of the things that's dangerous about this show and other shows like it is, the sex and the drugs is almost secondary. like any other show, it's about the kids and their relationships. but they set a norm that drinking and drugging and having this kind of sexuality is really what everybody's doing. and i think it's important for parents to let the kids know, it's what some kids are doing. but it's really not the norm. >> but it does seem like these kinds of images, these stories are not only on mtv at 10:00 at ni

, the only black artist on mtv when run dmc got on there was michael jackson. his nose was broken, and his hair was straightened. so he wasn't really speaking about the same cultural, you know, ideals and ideas that run dmc and some of hip-hop talks about. so they were the first time that the ghetto communicated in an honest way their frustrations or their aspirations or their--or their cultural ideas and ideals, like the clothing style. run dmc brought that in rock box, and then they made king of rock, which also played on mtv, and then, the big hit was walk this way, which was the coproduction between rick rubin, myself, and the band. run dmc wanted to make walk this way, but they didn't even know the name of the band. they wanted to make a record called toys in the attic. "you want to make toys in the attic? "oh, that funky beat. yeah, i know that." i didn't know the record either. and rick's like, "you stupid? "that's aerosmith. what are you? crazy?" and rick had the--the foresight to go out and get aerosmith and bring them in, and they were like, "no, we d

mtv declined comment on the charges. they basically said, we just want to address real world issues confronting teens in a frank way. they also have already tweaked the show in some ways. so what you're seeing is the edited version. they took out -- there's one controversial episode where a 17-year-old was seen running down the street and you saw the entire backside. that was edited out, according to "the times." >> wow. >>> a movie coming out called "the dictator" a comedy about the life of saddam hussein. guess who's playing saddam hussein? sacha baron cohen. the "borat" fame. it's going to come out in 2012. the same writers who write "curb your enthusiasm." should be interesting. >>> the real scoop on "the skinny." monday will be a big week for the show. >> that's right. we're turning 19. it's our birthday week. you'll notice a lot of changes. we're very excited. a lot of work has gone into a lot of these. >> a whole new look, new graphics, new feel of the show. we're going to change desks. all kinds of stuff. if you'

and mtv's "skins" is an instant hit. this week's premiere watched by 3.3 million people, many of them young children. the premise is simple. a group of high school friends talking sex -- >> you promised to help stanley today. >> with what? >> the virgin thing. >> reporter: drinking and doing drugs. >> purchase the narcotics and get here. >> reporter: usually the racy reality shows are stirring things up. not here. this is a scripted series based on a british hit show. >> do you have to do that? >> what? >> suck his face off in public all the time. >> the actors here are real teenagered, aged 15 to 19 doing things like this. and this. ♪ >> you have a major conglomerate, mtv and viacom marketing directly to children, sex, drug use. >> reporter: this letter was sent to the house and senate judiciary committees saying mtv may be violating federal law including sexual exploitation of children and child pornography. >> their defense is likely to be, oh, come on, this is just a television show. that's not the defense because

we didn't want to take it to mtv and have it become a kids show, which is, you know, all mtv really is anymore: nickelodeon. so, you know, that really wasn't a hard decision, you know? we knew that because they were airing the pythons, that still had that kind of material that was just as edgy as anything we've ever done, if not, edgier. there was a moment where you were ushered into a room, i'm sure, to watch the pilot. what was your gut reaction when you first saw it? brilliant; i thought it was funny. and to me, you know, funny is really the common denominator. you can do a lot of shows that have expression, but bottom line, it has to be funny. not only was it funny, you know, it was so unique and groundbreaking, provocative, you know, all the things that are in our "mission statement," you know, for the network: a unique point of view, intelligent, and very, very funny. and we looked and immediately knew that we had a hit on our hands. there was no mistake about it. but what's fascinating is, we went through a phase of-- because then what happened was that the--- and i don't rememb

[ laughter ] mtv has a controversial new show called "skins." this is an american take on a british show that's getting a lot of criticism for its graphic depictions of teen sex. the parents television council is asking the justice department to open an investigation into it. they called the show the most dangerous program ever for children. they obviously haven't seen "toddlers and tiaras." or "kate plus eight" for that matter. [ applause ] mtv's biggest show, "jersey shore" set a ratings record last night. almost 9 million viewers for the show. that is huge for cable. but to me, it's a little bit hard to understand how the ratings are going up. for the most part, it's the same thing over and over again. somebody gets drunk, somebody has sex, juice head goes in the hot tub, someone calls her boyfriend on the phone, it's repetitive. so, what we've done is, to mix it up, we took the audio from last night's show and mixed it with the video from an old episode of "scooby doo." >> we're going to do the boardwalk tonight. i'm really excited because i

organization's battle to stay above political controversy is being tested after participating in a tv program on mtv called "no easy decision." that show featured in the "new york times" followed a teenager's decision-making process as she chose to have an abortion. once the show aired last month, exhale's hotline got angry calls criticizing the program. >> we're not surprised because we know the climate that we're operating in, and abortion continues to be one of the major, you know, point of contention and conflict in this country. and our work is to bring peace to the abortion conflict through listening and storytelling. >> opponents of abortion, including conservative commentator bill owe rilely criticized the show as glorified abortion. it is now a national program offering services in four languages. >>> union pacific railroad buying up land near fremont auto plant, they have now taken over that building. the union pacific bought 160 acres near the old plant. fremont officials have been striving to find the best use for that land around the factory and say they will now work with union pacific

. >> reporter: but increasingly shows like mtv's teen mom and skins are depicting a fast world where teens come of age in a hurry. and though the show's creators say they're reflecting the real issues teens face, many worry about their influence. s . >> when we look at the television programs from yesteryear, what we see is that bad behaviors had consequences and those were clearly delineated in the television shows. >> reporter: in the '90s, befrly hills 1 resonated with teens. and the wb network targeted a teen market with shows like dawson's creek and buffy the value entimpire sleigher. in the last decade, scripted shows like the oc have pushed boundaries featuring underaged drinking and sex. and although it's not the only fact, to there are studies that show teens are influenced by what they watch. >> children who watch many of these sort of tint lating sizzling sexually explicit programs tend to emuhe late those behaviors. >> viewer discretion is advised. >> reporter: some parents are pushing back. most recently against the new show "skins" which features underage actors sometim

that's how one of the stars of mtv "skins" described a cast mate and sent people running to yahoo! to find out what the heck it means. and searches were up 16,000%. by the way, it means scandalous. perhaps not so coincidentally that's what the parents television council has been calling "skins," the charges spurring advertisers to pull commercials. ratings dropped for the racy drama, which only added to its cache online. and just as taco bell yanked its ads from the show, the company ran into a controversy of its own. a lawsuit alleging the chain's beef is below the standard to be called beef drove a spike in searches for taco bell meat. up 777% this week. one man who probably never stepped foot if a taco bell in his life, fitness pioneer jack lalanne continues to be memorialized on the web. news of lalanne's death this week launched searches for his power juicers, recipes up 8,244%. and last, i have a confession. there were definitely nights when i was on "world news now" that i wished i could wear my pjs to work. well, guess what? now you guys can. pajama jeans are apparently cat
