ktvu kraig debro has the very latest. he's in san francisco now with this very mysterious case. >> reporter: good morning, dave. an investigation into a mysterious death. supposedly it all started here. yesterday afternoon a maid trying to clean a hotel room found a womans body inside one of these hotels on lumbar. before that a car associated with two missing people from riverside county near palm springs was discovered on devil's slide. the car was associated with or owned by bill and colleen waterman. they found no traces of either couple but they conducted a search for a missing person off devil's slide in san mateo county. this morning that search is set to resume. i did talk to a sheriffs deputy this morning. they say they will resume the search. it's not yet a recovery phase. the man is trying to hide from authorities. he's a rather not suspect but a person of interest. but in talking to the deputy said that area survivable. so even if the person fell from that area he would be able to live out there for a couple d

kraig debro joins us from south san francisco with new information that came from inspections after that huge pipeline explosion in san bruno. good morning, krai. >> reporter: good morning, pam. pg&e found two dozen gas leaks that they have already prepared on that same tran mission line. three here in south san francisco. they were found near highway 101 and grand avenue which is a heavily populated area. both 101 and grand avenue are. the cause of the september 9th explosion that killed eight endestroyed 30 homes. ptcuc ordered pg&e to exexpect 6500 miles of pipeline following the explosion. pg&e has found and repaired a total of 59 pipeline gas leaks. 21 of those were found in hazardous to population areas or buildings. utilities has a big job to finish. federal investigators said pg&e falsely believed the san bruno tran mission line was a seamless pipe. it was not. raising the possibility that the amount of gas pressure in the pipe might have been higher than a seamed pipe could have handled. they have always known the same pipe goes to the town. the same pipe that exploded in san br

kraig debro just talked with a neighbor out there. >> reporter: good morning, dave. just talked to a neighbor. just talked to a police officer who told me the body is still back there. it was about four or five feet deep. the idea is yet to be determined that's going to be up to the coroner. first they're going to exhume that body from the back of this home on rebecca way beginning today. a team of local and federal investigators in white biohazard suits working under a blue tarp spent 12 hours in the backyard of the smith home before discovering that body. the search started on tuesday and included cadaver dogs. i.j. says the missing man's wife and her attorney gave consent for the property search on the condition her attorney was present. the backyard excavation began yesterday. two weeks ago neighbor reported 74-year-old dale smith missing from his home. but neighbors tell us this morning nobody's actually seen him around here since last september. neighbors told us this morning what the wife told them last september about dale's whereabouts. >> she said he's on a

ktvu's kraig debro is there with the police department now getting word from investigators. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we're at the station here in east oakland. quite frankly the area where this boys and girls club is located was just too unsafe at this time of the day. in this case you might think the circumstances are even worse. the police i talked to this morning said when they read the report it made the hair on the back of their neck stand up. the victim is a 7-year-old boy. medical staff at children's hospital alerted police about 8:45 last night. police tell us the boy told his mother what happened and she took her child to the hospital. police say the boy was violently raped in the bathroom of a boys and girls club at 85th avenue and international boulevard in east oakland. the victim did not tell anyone at the club. the original investigation looked into the role two other male juveniles played in the rape but there could be more suspects. this morning police tell me they're going to the club to question staff and find out who was there a

ktvu's kraig debro joins us now from novato where some of those kids go to school. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. in fact i talked to the principal earlier this morning. he tells me the airports of the students there are coming to get their kids whether they're sick or not. one of three students at walker creek ranch just a few miles west of here. no telling how many fifth graders from this school are actually sick, but according to the principal at the camp, most are already on their way home. again, just talked to the principal at walker creek camp in west marin county this morning. he told me the kids began getting sick yesterday afternoon. the ranch has been operating since 1963 as an outdoor residential science camp. the principal says it's not unusual for a bunch of fifth and sixth graders sleeping and eating together to pass a virus, but then the number of sick children, chaperons and staff members started to grow. that and the symptoms forced the school officials to call paramedics. >> we had what we believe was probably some kind of vi

ktvu's kraig debro joins us live. he's in san francisco. >> most of the homeless shelters in san francisco closed its doors. we're at a recycling center. during the day people try to earn a little money for necessities like food. this is the church on gary and franklin. two hours ago 70 men who spent the night there were preparing to head out into the rain. they face a lot of challenges. one man shows us how he deals with a pair of holey shoes. after putting his socks on he rolls plastic bags over the socks. the church is one of four winter shelters. >> i would be out on the street and catching a cold because of the rain and would probably and up in the hospital with pneumonia. >> reporter: even when you have a place to stay, it's not a healthy place. that man said some of the places could be ripe with unhealthy conditions such as bed bugs. i can tell you from now until back at 8:00 we're in another location. the temperature has dropped dramatically. we just checked. it feels like 43. it's actually 49. you can feel th

let's go back to kraig debro who is looking at a problem in san francisco. kraig has it cleared up? >> oh, yeah it has, sal. it's cleared up here. we're at bayshore and silver. it's also not raining in the area. this is one of the patches where we're not getting any rain. you are looking at a truck san francisco and 280 northbound. the problem started about -- what is it? eight hours ago, with the sunshine but now that problem is fixed. it was fixed about 40 minutes ago. just before the bulk of the moving commute. so that's good news. this is what the belly of the -- what was the 280 southbound 101 connector looked like about an hour and a half go. caltrans crews using a saw to cut through a roadway sign above that 280 split. after sawing from that -- that sign, they removed it. this all began shortly after midnight, about eight hours ago. chp says a big box truck hit the northbound 280 sign. kind of an unusual happenstance. that sign has been up there for years without any big box truck hitting it. maybe the truck was sitting higher than they normally do. minutes later after that c

kraig debro is in san francisco this morning. kraig are they saying this is related to yesterdays fires? >> reporter: there are two things that are related the time of day and location. behind me you can see the doors at barbershop. the next door neighbor made quick work of this fire. about the same time and neighborhood investigators are looking to the possibility that this fire and the three yesterday are arsons. this mornings fire started about 90 minutes to two hours ago at 18th street. investigators say the flames burned the front of this victorian home which also looks like it doubles far business. it doesn't appear to be any damage. fire officials say they could be dealing with the same person. >> in the last two days we have had four fires at the same time frame in the morning that we're investigating the whole thing to see if they are all linked. >> reporter: yesterdays fire w were all in the castro. one of the fires forced a number of residents to flee a building and heavily damaged the building that was under renovatio

kraig debro joins us from south san francisco with the results of recent inspections. good morning . >> reporter: good morning, pam. the pg&e the information submitted yesterday a report that said 21 gas leaks were found near people and buildings. three of them here in san francisco. north of oyster point and down along highway 101 here to grand avenue and then up grand avenue and the direction of san bruno. now i have just spoken with a gas pipeline safety expert on the phone. he says the leaks are serious but he can only think of one other example where a gas leak actually caused the kind of rupture we saw back on september ninth. the san bruno explosion killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. the report submitted says the utility has fixed the leak. in addition to the 21 that are close to people and buildings. pg&e told the regulatory agency said it found and fixed 38 others. according to richard cooper a gas leak did not cause the san bruno explosion. >> it's extremely rare in my 30 years of experience in investigating these pipelines. >> reporter: i asked him

first let's go to ktvu kraig debro. he's in san francisco. part of a freeway is shut down. what is going on? >> reporter: good morning, dave. according to the chp it's too dangerous to stay on that freeway. we moved here south of that location along 280. it's all happening behind me at the 280 northbound split. i say the split because it's after you pass the junction where 101 is by the time you get to this point it's at the 280 northbound split. this happened shortly after midnight. according to the chp a sign was reported hanging down in the split in the northbound direction toward san francisco. four minutes later someone saw metal debris and 12 after 12:00 according to the chp a big box truck hit that sign. that's when an ambulance was called out to the scene. by the time we got out there that part was removed. the standards on the northbound side was sort of ripped off. there is a couple of holes in it. on the southbound side the side that goes toward sf state that had damage on it too. we don't know if both of these incidents happened at the same time. chp got out the

kraig debro is there. what's happening? >> reporter: hundreds of homeless people jolted out of bed by a fire alarm. it started right behind me. you see that door right there it's propped open a little bit so people can get air in there. people are cleaning up what is remaining of the laundry room. now we video tape these pictures of the laundry room. it doesn't look like a total loss. the fire department says the sprinkler system kept down the flames until the crews arrived here six minutes before the 2:00 a.m. call. more than 215 people sleeping here tonight said the alarm was a jolt but there was an orderly evacuation. that evacuation took minutes according to the homeless person. hundreds of people had to wait outside in the cold any way. >> i was sleeping everything and then fire started up. and it woke everybody up. and had everybody come out. >> fire started in the laundry room. sprinkler head held the fire at bay. but our crews had to go in with lines to extinguish the remainder of the fire. >> reporter: this is a sc

kraig debro says the investigation is focusing on a missing man and his wife. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, dave. the marin county coroner has not made an id but there was a lone police officer outside the home on rebecca court in novato this morning. this is still a crime scene. officers here to make sure nothing is tampered with. the officer says a team of investigators in this homicide case are due here in about an hour. news chopper 2 gives a birds eye view of a backyard here after 12 hours of searching and digging, novato police and an f.b.i. evidence recovery team uncover a body. marin county coroner's office is trying to identify that body. police and federal investigators were brought here because of a missing persons report filed two weeks ago by a neighbor. some say they haven't seen 74- year-old dale smith in months. smith lives in the home with his wife. why she did not file a report is just one of the many unanswered questions. another why did police believe they might find the missing man on the property? >> in the backyard
