japan has decided to send self-defense force personnel to quake hit new zealand. the deployment was ordered on wednesday in response to a request from the government. the personnel will leave japan along with other officials on wednesday afternoon with medical and construction equipment? they include english language school students. the government aircraft will be used to bring injured japanese citizens back home. >>> japanese experts believe tuesday's earthquake is an aftershock. the magnitude 7 earthquake that occurred seventh months ago was west of tuesday's quake. more than 160 aftershocks have been recorded since that time. the research institute explains that new zealand is prone to earthquakes because it is located where two plates collide. a seismic engineering specialist says that the quake caused more damage to brick buildings than other structures. >> translator: old buildings made of brick or supported by thin pillars easily collapsed after being shaken from side to side and up and down. researchers stress the need for counterquake measures for brick

it's one of the most famous in new zealand. it's the symbol of christ church. it lost its spire today. there might be people inside that church who they're searching for. they don't know if this death toll will stop at 65 or some suspicion it will move into the hundreds. 100 missing and they have not been able to search all the houses of that been compromised by the earthquake in the outlying areas. >> one last question. i know this is the second quake, big quake to hit that region in the past five months. the other one was back in september. that was a 7.1. no fatalities there. they are calling this one maybe an aftershock. it's much smaller, 6.3. what are you hearing why this one is so devastating. >> well, because this one was much closer to the city center and it was much closer to the surface. the other one was about 20 kilometers below the surface, this one was 5 kilometers from the surface. much closer to the business district. such a sharp jolt, jenelle, the west coast is about three hours away from christ church. these pictures have probably not moved

let's begin with tragic news out of new zealand. the death toll from monday 6.3 earthquake has gone up. officials gave up hope for students in a collapsed building. >> it's nighttime now in new zealand and a strict curfew is in place. if anyone is in and out about certain areas of christ church after 6:30 in the evening they will be arrested. the 6.3 magnitude quake hit at the height of the workday tuesday new zealand time. as many as 300 people are missing. earlier today cheers erupted when researchers and teams found survives trapped in the rubble 24 hours. heartbreak at a tv station. 15 employees and as many as 10 japanese students are inside the collapsed building. police are 100% certain no one trapped in the rubble was alive and have moved rescuers to other locations. >> we're moving the resources we've got from the site to other sites where there's a high probability of survival. we still have several other spots. at the end of the day we have to make that choice. it's a hard choice. >> around christ church and the outlying a
