christie smith is live in dublin. she's been following the story all morning long and has the latest details. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is still an active investigation. we have a team from the d.a.'s office here, the sheriff's department, crime scene technicians processing the scene. the coroner hasn't arrived yet. that's the officers car over there. she radioed in she was trying to contact a suspicious person. within three minutes after that, there was gunfire. we were talking with a sergeant out here telling us she contacted a man walking around a car dealership. it seemed out of place. she called for back up. deputies were on the way. she got out of the car. this man confronted here across the street near the car dealership and started hitting her in the head. >> don't know at this point. it was 1:30 in the morning. this is an area not heavily traveled. could be an issue where she thought it was a burglary. we have a furniture store here. we don't know what the thought process was. >> now, i just spok

christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. four people were inside overnight when the fire broke out. they smelled smoke. they were all able to get out okay. here is what's left of the home here on dwight near sacramento street. this started about 1:00 in the morning. police arrived first and found power lines down in front of the home. they couldn't make a direct attack on the home. firefighters had to go around the side while they called pg&e to shut off the power. two gas meters blew up in the fire. one on the home and one on a converted garage. for 90 minutes they said they dealt with a continuous five to six-foot wall of fire coming from the home. they kept putting water on the home and released the valve to shut off gas. there was talk pg&e may have to dig up the street to shut off the gas. that didn't happen. what caused it, they still don't know. the fire inspector is out here this morning. firefighters telling me the home is very close to a total loss. reporting live in berkeley, christie smith. >>> a firefighter is i

christie smith is live with an update. >> reporter: good morning to you. we are talking with neighbors in antioch. they definitely heard the gunfire erupt after 9:00 last night. for one family, it came dangerously close with bullets flying into their window. a mother telling us this is very close to where her 9-year-old son would have been sleeping in his bunk bed had she not gotten him up and given him something to eat. it's on sycamore drive where a man was shot and taken to the medical center. we are trying to get an update on his condition this morning. the mother didn't want to go on camera but said it sounded like fire crackers at first. >> i came in and saw the thing broken on the ground. i said why did you break this. he said i didn't touch it. i looked in the window and saw three bullet holes. i looked across the closet and saw the holes in the closet. i panicked and went outside. i saw the cops and said i think somebody shot through my son's room. >> reporter: she also had an infant in the home at the time. everyone is shaken but okay. we had a c

christie smith is live in san francisco with more on that announcement. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. well, he certainly has a long career with sfpd including running two of the department's toughest station houses, including the bayview. well, now he is the pick to be police chief. we're talking about captain greg sur, he's 52 years old. the then chief moved over to the district attorney's office. he was most recently in command of the bayview district where homicides dropped dramatically while he was in charge. he is mayor ed lee's choice and has a number of strong backers, like the police officers association and state attorney general kamala harris. when he was deputy chief he was one of the command staff indicted in 2003 for allegedly conspiring to obstruct the investigation into fajita-gate, who can forget that. that was where off-duty cops allegedly beat up two men over their food. a judge ultimately dropped the indictment as baseless, but there are a number of things he's going to be dealing with as well, including budget cuts. b

christie smith is live with a look at what happened. christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. i spoke with the police and they are hoping to get the word out to the public, they are hoping to find this guy who grabbed a 12-year-old girl on her way to school and he pulled a gun on her and threatened her, she says. we have a sketch for you. he's a hispanic man in his 30s. about 5'6" to 5'9" about 170 to 200 pounds with spiky brown hair and a bald spot on top. she was minding her own business walking to downer elementary school when a man in a light blue pick-up truck started to whistle at her then follow her in a truck. that's when it escalated. he got out and tried to grab her. she pushed him and he stumbled. he pulled out a gun and said get in or i'll kill you. she was able to make it to her school. again, that truck is light blue, believed to be from the 1980s or 1990s with primer on it and a dent in the rear. the hood may have primer on it. he was wearing dark sunglasses, a hoody and blue jeans. police are saying they don't have similar reports. the good news in all this, if

christie smith is there live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. the scene is still active here this morning. i just spoke with a detective from oakland police homicide department. right now, they are interviewing witnesses downtown. here is what happened. it was before 1:00 a.m. a man got out of a car and tried to get into sweet jimmie's bar. he was denied access. according to the detective he tried to push his way in and started shooting. there were ten to 12 people inside the bar at the time. a horrible scene. two people shot and killed. four people wounded. two in critical condition and two in stable condition. two of the victims were women. the motive at this point is unclear. detectives aren't releasing much information about the car involved. he tells me there were a couple people in the car, not just the shooter. this is still a very active investigation. meantime, while this was going on around the corner investigators telling me there was more gunfire as a club was letting me out. one person shot in the arm there. this is near the produce
