it is once again open in san jose. a stretch was closed for much of the morning after a car struck a chp officer on the side of the road there. kiet do joins us now from bascomb avenue interchange where from what we have seen, there's still a little hail on the road that. might have been part of the problem. >> reporter: you can see some of the hail. it's probably half inch to an inch thick in some spots. but this was really a big problem at about 2:00 this morning. we have some videotape of a chp officer arriving at valley medical center here at san jose. he had a broken leg and possibly facial injuries. they were non-life-threatening. this all began sometime around 1:0 or so. that's when chp got -- 1:30 or so when chp got reports of ice on the road in both directions on 880 at bascomb. somebody was having problems with a tire. the chp responded. he was outside of his vehicle and was hit by an oncoming pickup truck. he was knocked into the shoulder and that -- where ended up in the hospital there. but they shut down t
