as asian-americans in this country. as we look toward the new year, i think we can say that the asian-american community has come far in san francisco since we first started immigrating here in the 1950's, and there were many challenges for our community, beginning with the first exclusion act, immigration and for men and women that came for san francisco, to labor issues, and also segregation that we faced. and that was then brought forward as a court case to look at what it means to be equal but separate in our public schools. there is much work we have done here, and now we see we have our first asian-american mayor, the first time we have seen four asian american sitting on the board of supervisors. it is certainly an honor and privilege for me to be here today. i want to recognize the history not only of our communities, but of many communities that have fought for us to be here today. again, happy new year. thank you for being here and joining in on the celebration. but there is a warning for americans abroad. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us now from sfo this morning. allie. >> reporter: pam, that warning comes from the u.s. state department. it has issued a worldwide alert for u.s. citizens living abroad and in americans traveling internationally. and of course that applies to the thousands of travelers who usually fly internationally here at sfo. now the state department warns there is an enhanced risk for anti-american violence. what is unusual about this alert is that it doesn't mention a specific country or region where americans should be extra cautious. instead the advisory says this alert is worldwide. and it says it will remain in effect until august 1st. it also instructs americans abroad to "limit travel outside their homes and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations." now just to be clear, this travel alert does not apply to airports on u.s. soil. only to the people flying internationally out of those airports. the security level at bay area airports from oakland to san jose to he
