i'm betty nguyen. violent storms are moving east this morning, after tornadoes killed at least nine people in oklahoma, kansas and arkansas. forecasters say the greatest threat of tornadoes is from the mississippi valley. at least five people were killed when twisters hit during rush hour. in kansas, two people died when high winds knocked a huge tree onto their van. two more were killed in arkansas and around dallas, severe thunderstorms dropped baseball sized hail and left 70,000 people without power. terrell brown has more. >> reporter: this was one of several tornadoes that roared through the suburbs of oklahoma city right after rush hour tuesday. the twisters turned over tanker trucks, tore down trees and leveled homes. >> i was expecting trees gone, maybe roof, but obviously totally, totally gone. had the house here, we had a three-car garage, two-story garage apartment, silo, another house. >> reporter: the car tim's wife just bought is now leaning against a tree but he's looking at what he didn

i'm betty nguyen. we begin with a security scare in ireland just as queen elizabeth is about to begin an historic visit. police found and detonated a bomb outside of dublin. they're also investigating another suspicious device. mark phillips reports from dublin. >> reporter: irish police and army say they originally discovered what they called a viable explosive device in the luggage compartment of a bus that was heading into dublin from the west of ireland. this is discovered overnight on the evening before the queen's scheduled arrival here. later this morning, an irish army spokesman is saying that the device was in fact a hoax. it is very likely irish security forces will be chasing around dublin and both north and south of ireland on bomb scares through today because there has been an unprecedented amount of security laid on for the queen's visit and tensions are extremely heightened on both sides of the irish divide, and, indeed, on mainland britain. this is the first visit by a british monarch t

i'm betty nguyen. folks in memphis are hoping this morning that the worst is over. the mississippi appears to have crested below record levels. in low-lying areas, it's a disaster. most of the city center has been spared. right now, flood warnings or watches are up along 900 miles of the mississippi. so the high water at memphis will continue for a while. and the city officials say the cleanup could take months. >> reporter: hour-by-hour, the mississippi is a rising threat. >> a few feet between the river and the interstate. >> reporter: the river is three tim miles wide in some spots, six times its typical width. in south memphis, danny lee mitchell wades through his basement. but he's staying put, more afraid of looters. in neighborhoods like this one where you can only see the roof tops, the misery is rising with the water. the mississippi will crest for as long as a week. so it could be two weeks before all of this water goes away. in memphis, the focus is on three bloated tributaries, so overwhelmed by the mississippi, two are actually flowing backwards. all of

i'm betty nguyen. wounded congresswoman gabrielle giffords is expected to pass another medical milestone today. she'll undergo a planned surgery to replace a piece of her skull that was removed after she was shot in the head in january during an assassination attempt. joel brown is in washington with more on this. joel, how complicated is this surgery? >> reporter: betty it's called a cranioplasty. it probably sounds more complicated than it is but it is the biggest milestone yet in what giffords' doctors describe a miraculous recovery. doctors at this houston hospital plan to use a plastic implant to replace a piece of congresswoman gabrielle giffords' skull. >> they decided to use a fabricated segment as opposed to her original. they feel it's safer, cleaner, actually it's a better puzzle piece sort of fitting in there, if you can imagine that. >> reporter: surgeons removed a section in january to reduce brain swelling after giffords was shot in the head. she's been wearing a helmet while undergoing

i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen. in the words of one joplin resident, there's nothing left. two days after a single powerful tornado reduced much of joplin, missouri to rubble, the death toll is rising and rescue crews are still searching for survivors. more severe weather including tornadoes could be on the way. today the national weather service predicts a high risk of another tornado outbreak in texas, oklahoma, arkansas, and missouri. overnight, a tornado hit big rock, tennessee 70 miles northwest of nashville. it damaged dozens of homes. and injured at least three people. elsewhere, severe weather hit late yesterday. and overnight in the ohio valley including possible tornadoes in kentucky and pennsylvania. >> probably wasn't even 30 seconds and i could feel the house -- feel the house moving. i thought it was going to come in on me. >> scary, but so far this morning, only minor injuries are reported. >>> to the latest now in joplin, efforts have been hampered by 16 people were killed by the twister. it was the nation's deadliest single twister since 1963. no wonder, it

i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen. much of joplin, missouri, is in ruins this morning. dozens of people are dead after the city took a direct hit from a massive tornado. the joplin tornado was part of a line of storms that swept across the midwest. it spun off twisters from oklahoma to wisconsin. today the same system threatens the deep south and the mississippi and ohio valleys. the storm destroyed whole neighborhoods in joplin, knocking out power and phone service. the search for victims continues throughout the night. a state of emergency is in effect. the national guard has been activated. and fema officials are working with state and local agencies. joel brown has been tracking the storms overnight from washington. >> terrell, good morning. damage is just so overwhelming that people there are having a hard time even describing it. after an early report out of joplin, missouri, that at least 24 people had been killed, city officials quickly warned that they feared that the number could be much larger. the trail of destruction stretches for miles in joplin, missouri.

i'm terrell brown, in for betty nguyen. the mississippi valley is getting its worst flooding in over 70 years and this morning the water is still rising. in low-lying areas of memphis, more than 1,300 homes have been evacuated. the mississippi is expected to crest there tomorrow, and residents are holding their breath. this is the mississippi and its tributaries in normal times. but spring rain and winter snow are pushing it above its banks. all of these counties along the river are facing floodwaters. randall pinkston has more. >> reporter: from the sky the mayor of memphis sees his city under attack by the mississippi river and its tributaries. >> notice how close this is getting to the interstate highway. that's another concern. >> reporter: the rising waters are creating havoc on the roads. a section of u.s. 51 a major north/south artery was shut down through parts of memphis. the river is expected to crest by tuesday morning at 48 feet. just shy of the record set in the historic flood of 1937. the mayor is now counting
