more storms are heading their way. >> the cold air, the cold front has not pushed all the humidity away yet. until that happens you can always get storms that fire during the day in the heat to have day to go back up again, to start spinning again. then eventually it's like a big broom. when the cold line comes by or the dry line comes by it pushes it farther and farther to the southeast and gets to the gulf of mexico we don't know they're in the tornados because they're in the water. they're water spouts. they don't matter unless you're boating out there. a couple of tornado warnings in effect today it's not that hot yet. that's mountain view. they're traveling to the north of mountain view into the ozark. that may be something that we worry about later on for today. let's get rid of this. in st. louis a bow echo line of weather right there has moved right through st. louis. why is that significant? when you get weather that lines up like that another broom and that broom pushed wind through st. louis between 60 and 70 miles per hour. we know of damage not from tornados, but if it's a

the cold air of winter. but this has been highly unusual. earlier in the broadcast we were talking about the number of ef-4s. since we've been keeping records since 1800s of storms and weather in this country, the number or the percentage of ef-4 tornadoes is about 1% of all tornadoes and now here just within about two weeks of each other, we have ef-4s and ef-5s that are miles wide and long track tornadoes that stay on the ground for long periods of time. this is highly unusual and much like you would look at a flooding situation and you would say that's 100-year flood. this is certainly a 100-year tornado situation if not then some. what we've got to remember about this is that we can build homes that will survive tornadoes. we truly, truly can. most areas where tornadoes happen they just don't legislate that people have to build houses to withstand them because it's so expensive. if you look around a lot of homes are built on slab foundations. you can't survive this kind of tornado, this size of tornado,

so you are the cold air and the warm air. cold air this way and warm this line, and the storms will begin to go up. let' see if i have anything here, dave. put it where you want to, and mings this, as the storms go up, you will begin to see, and this is kind of the clouds that begin to go up. the streamline starts to spiral up, and you see the puffy clouds which are cumulus clouds, and because they are buoyant and warm and all of the particles continue to go up all of the moisture, and all of the humidity continuing to go up, and as it goes up, it wants to spin. a lot like the water in the drain, in your tub wants to spin as it goes down. right. so that whole spin, and the whole storm begins to spin. not necessarily every spinning storm will put down a tornado, but as it spins aloft, it brings the energy to the ground. think of nancy kerrigan, an ice skater, right, one foot on the ice and arms and legs out and things are slowly, but as soon as the ice skater brings the arm in, you see the momentum going, and the ice skater go

we have the warm air settling in. the cold air mass is coming in. they collide and you get fire, explosive reaction. as a result, the tornadoes touch down. take a look at this. this is impressive. this is video you would normally see out of the midwest. hey, this is straight out of butte county. several tornadoes like this touched down yesterday. they are the weaker tornadoes between ef-0 and ef-1. up to 80-mile-per-hour winds. national weather service is going to head out today, look at the damage and that's the way they assess how strong this tornadic rotation was. we could see an ef-2 out of this. i wouldn't be surprised looking at some of the damage this morning. meanwhile, in our neck of the woods, tranquil weather returned. we have a system trying to get into the area. it's going to drive in more cloud cover. i think we'll stay nice and dry for the weekend. it is chilly out there. look at the temperature in gilroy this morning. 41 degrees. you are going to touch on the 30s before the morning is done. i have the daytime highs in the 70s. lookin

here's the satellite composite. a lot of cold air behind the cold front. it's been wrapped around by this area of low pressure, and this is going to swing in here tonight, and definitely tomorrow. so you can expect cooler temperatures, and also if we see some sun breaks, instability with this cold core could trigger isolated thunderstorms. beginning at 7:00 tonight the rain is gathering off the coast, and you can see the animation. by 11:00 tonight the first big wave moves in, and by 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 tomorrow morning, we're going to continue with breaks and scattered showers in the afternoon, some of the colder air starts to wrap in here, and we could possibly see some isolated thunderstorms, but then later on in the evening, we'll see the clergy. on monday, by 2:00. the second wave of the storms move in. so it isn't over with yet. here's a look at the sierra forecast for the amgen tour stage one. going to hit the bikes at 10:30 tomorrow morning, that is if they don't cancel. and you can see a winter weather advisory in effect there through 11:00 tomorrow
