kennedy's restoration of the white house. and betty monkman was her name, and the curator said do you know that restoring the white house is so associated with the name of mrs. kennedy, that americans think no one has ever touched the white house since mrs. kennedy left in 963. and yet we know that everyone who moves into a new apartment or condo or house does some redecorating, so most first ladies have done some redecorating. she, though, undertook this project to restore completely the white house, take it from what she called a rather shabby 1950s, knotty fine faux colonial look to a proper, appropriate look for the age in which it was built and initially lived in. so she also established commissions and committees about the arts, about antiques, about paintings in the white house. and she made sure that everything that was there, as best she and these experts could determine, that these were all authentic; paintings, sculptures, paints, up upholstey and antiques. this is a sad day, i have to say, in mrs. kennedy's wife.

it's one of many questions facing the white house today. proof of death. one reason president obama chose the risky navy s.e.a.l.s operation rather than bombing the compound was to make sure there would be evidence the u.s. got osama bin laden. and now they have it. dna, photos, even videos. all of bin laden dead at the compound and on the aircraft carrier that was used for his burial at sea. but so far senior aides to the president do not see much need to release the photographic evidence. >> i'll be candid, that there are sensitivities here in terms of the appropriateness of releasing photographs of osama bin laden and in the aftermath of this firefight, and we're making an evaluation about the need to do that. >> reporter: it was a sentiment echoed by some on capitol hill today. >> i just don't see a need to do it. the dna has been dispositive. >> i personally think it's morbid. >> reporter: others think the white house needs to provide the proof. >> let's not have conspiracy theories develop. from what i've heard of the pictures, they're not ghoulish.

you know how all of this works inside of the white house. does the blame fall on john brennan's office? >> look, i was with john brennan today, who was himself sort of suggesting that his frustration with the leaks. what happens here and i don't believe it is john brennan's office and information that comes out of the individual advisers does not come out without coordination across the interagency, so i don't buy that at all. what happens is that this information resides down inside of most of the agencies, so what will happen, and it is a frustration to every administration, and individuals will begin to leak things not because they are being authorized to do it b toit, but prove they have access or prove their credibility with the press. it is a frustration and difficult to get a handle on for john brennan or the white house. >>> last hour, chief of naval operations told cnn that he is confident that the families of the s.e.a.l.s involved in that operation will be protected. i wanted to reiterate that so that you will know that at home. >
