one of the moderators was bob schieffer, our chief washington correspondent and anchor of "face the nation." bob, what happened today? >> schieffer: scott after the cbs news town hall meeting with president obama, this was the chance to get the republican side of things. south carolina governor nick haley, florida congressman allan west, congressman paul ryan architect of the house budget plan and oklahoma senator tom coburn pretty much stuck to the republican line. low taxes and cutting the deficit will eventually lead to economic growth, and that will increase jobs. ryan said what's been tried so far just hasn't worked. >> remember what the stimulus was suppose to do? it was suppose to keep unemployment from going above 8%. we're at 9.1. >> schieffer: it was coburn who may have won the prize for candor. >> i'm convinced that washington's main focus is short-term political expediency. and the reason our country is at risk is because we think short term and about the next election rather than thinking about the future of our country. you know, the reason i'll stand up as a conservative rep

for more insight on the poll and the president, bob schieffer, our chief washington correspondent and anchor of "face the nation" joins us. bob, what did you see today? >> well, i'll tell you, scott, what you saw today was a very different president obama, and so did i. and that poll that you just cited may be the reason why. presidents know elections are about the economy, and when nearly 40% of the people have basically given up and think things will never get better, that's got to make any president feel vulnerable. what you saw today was a president on the war path with congress, and we really haven't seen that from him before. the republicans have been blaming him for the bad economic stuff. he threw it right back in their faces today, sort of what have you done lately? and here's a few things you can do. he basically said no deal on anything unless you tackle some of these billionaire tax breaks and he really ripped the republicans who say it is not crucial to raise that debt ceiling. of course, it is, he said, unless you want us to choose which of our bills to pay. he said, "do

bob schieffer is our chief washington correspondent and the anchor of "face the nation." he joins me now. bob, what are the political realities that the president faces? >> well, he said he's going to have those troops home by september, so that means before the election. he plans to have this done. this is-- what he has done tonight, he's moving them out faster than the military wanted, but probably not as fast as most americans. a poll out today shows a majority of americans now want us to leave afghanistan. i think what shows the shift in priorities, though, is the sentence where the president said, "america, it is time to focus on nation building here at home." that shows we're moving the focus from there to here. >> pelley: he made a point of bringing up the killing of osama bin laden, and i wonder how much that fact has changed the political calculus here in washington. >> well, i think it has had a remarkable change. all of a sudden, you're seeing for the first time, a majority of americans saying it's time to do something different. it's time to start bringing the

bob schieffer, our chief washington correspondent and anchor of "face the nation," joins us now with some insight into all of this. and, bob, you know, time is slipping by. i wonder, are they getting any closer to a deal? >> short answer, no. and i'll spare you the details, but the two sides, scott, are as far apart tonight on reducing the deficit as they were in january when this congress convened. republicans want deep cuts in spending. democrats say there has to be a lot of government tax breaks eliminated, and that's the standoff. these thing always go down to the wire. but here is what's different this time. republicans say they won't vote to raise the debt ceiling unless there's a deal on this deficit reduction, and that's where we move into very dangerous territory. unless this debt limit is raised so the government can borrow more money, it may have to start defaulting, as you said, on its financial obligations this summer. even talk that for the first time in history uncle sam is a deadbeat who can't pay his bills could send not only our economy, but the world economy, into

schieffer on "face the nation." >> so a person who may have been on the record as saying he favored same-sex marriage, you wouldn't disqualify that person for nominating them to the supreme court? >> my primary test will be the constitution. they need to be a strong constitutionalist and recognize that just as the justices should not act outside of the bounds, neither should the president. >> i have to say i don't think you answered the question but i'll go on. >> well, if you want to go further, we will. >> reporter: now, for all the excitement here earlier today, scott, it's also important to remember that sometimes these early polls don't tell us all that much. this time four years ago, mitt romney also was leading and way back in the back of the pack was this unknown candidate, mike huckabee, who eventually won iowa. >> pelley: thanks, jan. libyan dictator moammar qaddafi is now officially a wanted man. the international criminal court today issued arrest warrants for qaddafi, his eldest son and his intelligence chief. the judges say there is evidence that they are responsible f

schieffer on "face the nation." >> first of all, it isn't true that the government would default on its debt because very simply the treasury secretary can pay the interest on the debt first and then from there we have to just prioritize our spending. >> pelley: so is the country facing an economic train wreck on the second of august? we asked anthony mason to find out. >> reporter: if the u.s. maxes- out its credit card, economists say, the treasury will still be able to make the interest payments on its debt. >> we're not going default, but that's irrelevant. at the end of the day if we don't raise the debt ceiling the economy will go back into recession, interest rates will spike. >> reporter: the recession will be deep, warns economist mark zandi who's advised candidates in both parties. the treasury would immediately have to cut and prioritize its spending. debt and interest payments would be made first. $500 billion is due in august alone. social security and medicare would be next on the list. >> on august 2, the government won't have to cut social security payments or medica

bob schieffer asked her about that yesterday on "face the nation" and she dodged the question. watch. >> what about farm subsidies? you've been from farm subsidies on your family farm. to you think we ought to think about cutting those back? >> well, i think everything needs to be on the table right now. every part of government. i'll tell you one thing that should be on the table, under barack obama, the last two years, the number of federal limousines for bureaucrats has increased 73% in two years. i can't think of anything more reprehensible than seeing bureaucrats on their cell phones in the back -- 73% increase in the number of federal limousines in the last two years, for heaven's sake. >> you're not saying that eliminating limousine service is anywhere equal to reducing farm subsidies? >> what i'm saying is i think that's an easy one that we need to do. clearly, president obama is not serious about cutting spending. >> we invited her on the program tonight by the way and her people refused saying she was, quote, booked solid all week. she appeared on sean hannity where s
