and john myers, sacramento bureau chief for kqed public radio from the capitol. john myers, it's been a hot place up there in sacramento. more than weatherwise. some details on just what happened with the budget the democrats and the governor. >> i tell you, belva, it's been a heck of an interesting week. it's been historic. we had the first budget passed by a majority vote in 78 years. we had the first veto of a budget by a governor in recorded history. and we -- and we start in the week the same place we started, which is with no budget at all. it feels really as though everything that we were talking about back in march is true here in june, which is the governor insists that his way is the right way. democrats in the legislature don't see any way to get republicans to go along, specifically with the tax package that governor brown has been talking about all year long. and here we are. we're stuck. we're two weeks from the beginning of the fiscal year and nobody knows how you pick up the pieces after this wild week. >> i think the question is, what is his way?

. >> belva: and for more on redistricting, you can listen to form on kqed public radio monday morning at 9:30. thomas peele, we have been waiting a long time since late may for the jury in the chauncey bailey trial to decide the fate of defendants. can you give us a little bit of a background scope on what happened? >> remember, chauncey bailey was talking to work august 2nd, 2007. he was shot down in oakland a couple of blocks from his office at the "oakland post." two other murders, michael wills and owe dole ro'dell roberson. bailey, there was a fast arrest, people were raiding the bakery, found a young man had a shotgun, threw it out the window, gave what turns out to be a flawed confession to police about 12 hours later, 15 hours later. he was in jail for a long time. he was kind of waited out. and decided he didn't want to go to prison for life. and he had some information for the police. and that really kind of came to the crux of the jury's decision yesterday when the leader of the bakery, yusef bey. vichlt, and another man, antoine mackay, were convicted of multiple murders.

it's reported by newshour correspondent spencer michels, and is part of a joint project with kqed's science program "quest." just before doesing this time of year the fishing boats return to san francisco from the pas civic. their cargo of dungeoness crabs headed forstores and restaurants a all along the pas civic coast. but fisherman are nervous that newly created ocean sanctuaries are about to eke into their catch. >> you get to a point where you say is this fishery viable any longer s it worth it for me to go out and camp a handful of fish. >> this fisherman and others are worried about dozens of areas off the coast that california has either designated off limits to fishing or has limited the take. environmentalists say these marine protected areas as they're called, are necessary because of overfishing and pollution. >> our biggest challenge is 90% of 9 big fish on the planet are already gone. you know, 75% of the fish species in most. world's oceans are fished to their absolute limits. >> human disturbance, this pollution, it's development along our shores that were encroaching on hab
