we always say oh, new hampshire takes this very personally, and this will hurt him in new hampshire. i'm thinking, gee, it's june. there will be other debates. does it palpably hurt jon huntsman, assuming he's going to run, which we all do? >> i'm not sure. he's not a declared candidate, and he also doesn't quite seem to be ready. he's only been back in the united states from china for six weeks. he's been out in new hampshire a lot talking to voters. he's made it clear that this will be the centerpiece of his strategy here. so i'm sure he'll be back in a debate here. i'm not sure it will hurt him that much. but the others are getting a chance to get started in this race without him, and in that sense, could be. >> what's your take on huntman? >> i talked to him last night. i sensed there was a little regret in some ways. i agree with phil that he's still honing his message, still trying to figure out what kind of ground he's going to occupy. interestingly, i went to a house party last night hosted in nashville oddly enough by a obama supporter, voted for obama last time, still more

new hampshire. that's where romney announced and candy crowley is there. we all listened to the speech carefully. does he sound like the front-runner for the republican nomination right now? >> reporter: completely he sounded like the front-runner. not a mention of any other republicans that are in this race or thinking about getting in this race, which is not all that unusual, i think, at this stage of the game. they have only had one debate. they will mix it up soon enough. but the fact is, he was very strong and he came out almost with a totality of his speech, you came away with what really was a broad side against all things of the obama administration, foreign and domestic. this was a very tough speech by a man who was ready really for the season finale rather than going through all of these other stages that obviously this contest has to go through. >> you had a chance, candy, to speak with him after he made the formal announcement. why doesn't he think he will get the normal announcement thi

this is a new hampshire is important to me moment for mitt romney just in case new hampshire-i hampshire-ites haven't seen enough of him. this sends a message, i'm here, and i'm competing big. >> he's going to go after pretty hard on president obama and jobs, the economy saying barack obama has failed america. what do we make of that strategy now, candy? >> reporter: well, it does a couple of things. first of all, as you mentioned, he's often been called the front-runner or weak front-runner. nonetheless, a lot of money in name recognition. so he is the presumptive front-runner. certainly in the polls here in new hampshire, he has a nice healthy lead. so what do you do when you're that? you go after the president. he's not going after anybody else in this race or people who might be considering getting into this race. so there's that. but it also plays to what the romney camp wants to play to this entire election season, and that is the economy and jobs. romney will position himself as i'm like the businessman. i know how to create jobs and contrast that with the experience that he believes p

four years ago right now he was in iowa and new hampshire. it just goes to show we never exactly know what is going on in a campaign. a lot of voters had their eyes on senate edwards and thought he was the strongest nominee. back in 2003, people inside the bush white house thought he was the guy who could beat george w. bush. of course, it's not ended well for him and it's a tragedy all the way around. we could argue the merits of the this is a right prosecution or not. a jury will decide that in north carolina. but it just goes to show that flash and appearance is perhaps not the most important thing in a candidate. he had a lot of that and he had substance as well -- gwen: and even if the government can't prove his case, the things he's admitted to are things people find pretty objectionable. meanwhile, far from the madding crowd behind closed doors there seemed to be actual deal making going on involving the federal budget. both sides accused the other but in private what's going on? >> they are making some progress and a lot of the public

people in new hampshire -- it is a terrific political environment in new hampshire. it is terrific. the joke is, what do you think about mitt romney? i have met him a couple of times, i am having him over for dinner on thursday night, but i am going to stay undecided until i meet all the candidates. that is the environment and it is a terrific environment. it is about getting out and meeting and talking with as many groups and individuals as you can. i have been to new hampshire 10 times. my second home will be new hampshire, believing that you can go from obscurity to prominence overnight with a good showing there. >> so campaigning for any job is essentially a job interview for the american people or constituents of of state or congressional districts. what is your pitch? >> that i am an entrepreneur and i have been very successful as governor of new mexico. look at my resume, hear what i have to say, and now we are talking about issues of the day, and make a determination if i am going to actually fulfill what it is i am saying that i am going to do. based on my resume, you can t
