let's welcome phillip and chloe >> hi there, phillip. >> hi, chloe >> so, this play, it's been quite a journey. we're talking 3 1/2 years, maybe nearly 50 different drafts and 5 workshops? . >> five workshops, yes. >> so, looking back at the journey, how has it been for you and has it come out as you expected it would? . >> what's interesting is if you work on a play this long, normally there are times that it becomes redundant and you get a little bored with the piece. it's only natural. it's pushing 4 years now. this one was interesting in that it never got boring or ever felt redundant and each thing that we did over these almost 4 years, whether it was going off to sundance or to writer's retreat they have in sheritan, wyoming -- is that where you went? . >> that was in utah and la as well, down there at the institute. >> they have another writer's retreat in sheritan, wyoming, so i spent time out there and we workshoped this in san francisco, we have done readings at the asia society in new york. each time we did a workshop, each time we did a reading, it moved the piece forward

the sentencing of phillip and nancy garrido. coming up we'll o go live to antioch where the couple lived for years. first we're live in placerville with the judge's decision and the statement read in court from victim jaycee dugard. ken. >> reporter: well, the sentence is for the garridos were part of a plea deal that had already been announced. there were really no surprises there. but having been in the courtroom i can tell you the real drama was the victim impact statements in which jaycee's mother who spoke before the court read a statement. she called the garridos evil and she also read a statement from her daughter. now jaycee's mother said she could always hear her daughter's cry, feel her daughter's pain. but only in her heart during jaycee's 18 years in captivity. she called both phillip and nancy garrido selfish and monstrous. the 1991 the garridos kidnapped then 11-year-old jaycee in south lake tahoe. in court we heard how phillip garrido used a taser to subdue the child. her mother, jaycee's mother, read a statement

a little after 6:00 the morning of the 31st the camera records phillips' ford expedition leaving the parking lot. five minutes later wynetta wright's saturn vue is seen leaving as well. wright's vehicle with her baby dead inside was found in this parking lot two days later 1/4- mile away. wright was found dead in the woods about 100 feet from the picnic table shot once in the head. richmond phillips initially denied having any contact with wright until confronted with cell phone records that showed otherwise. >> this has been absolutely devastating for our community. it is as you might understand extreme live devastating as well to the family of the victim. they are just absolutely beside themselves, as are all of us. >> reporter: outside the courthouse wynetta wright's grandfather declined to repeat what he said to richmond phillips in the courtroom. >> i have to hold back talk right now. they told me not to say too much. >> reporter: according to the affidavit jaylin wright apparently died from the extreme heat while strapped inside her car seat. when confronted with the evidence r

for three years, phillip raped jaycee weekly until she got pregnant. according to jaycee, after having her first daughter, phillip continued to rape her, but less frequently. he knew i was really scared about getting pregnant again. he said he just couldn't help himself, but he was really trying to stop. and then i got pregnant again. and that's the last time he had sex with me was when she was conceived. in testimony, jaycee said she never tried to escape. at first, it was fear. then the little girl came to believe by phillip garrido raping her, she was stopping someone else from getting hurt. he said that he needed help with his sexual problem. that he had a real problem and that you know, i was helping him. and he didn't say that he would take somebody else, but the impression i got was that i was helping prevent something. after her second daughter, jaycee wanted as normal a life as possible. they created a type of family, phillip, the father, nancy the mother. jaycee who was never allowed to go anywhere alone wrote in her journal her feelings of b

richmond phillips was arrested last week for murdering his former girlfriend. this afternoon, he was charged with killing his girlfriend's baby as well. matt joins us now live from the prince georges county courthouse in upper marlboro. matt, where a horrible story seems to get worse. >> reporter: lesli, no emotion today in richmond phillips when he appeared in court, but plenty of emotion from the state's attorney who described phillip's alleged crime as horrific. richmond phillips was charged today with killing 20-year-old wynetta wright and wright's 11 month old daughter, jaylin. the day before the hearing, phillips allegedly shot wright in the head in a prince georges county car and left jaylin alone in a car nearby. >> we look forward to prosecuting the case and to seeking justice for this family. >> the state's attorney today said she has not yet decided whether or not to seek the death penalty against phillips. a judge meanwhile, today ordered phillips held without bond pending his trial. lesli. >> all right matt, thanks for that reporting. now to a biza

phillip was sentenced to 431 years to life. that's the maximum sentence he could have gotten. his wife nancy, 36 years to life in prison. both had pleaded guilty in april to kidnapping jaycee dugard, who was 11 years old back then, then raping her and holding her for 18 years. jaycee dugard was not there at today's sentencing but her biological mother read a statement on jaycee's behalf and it says, i chose not to be here because i refuse to waste another second of my life in your presence. everything you ever did to me was wrong and i hope one day you will see that. she concluded by saying, i hated every second of every day for 18 years. and you stole my life and that of my family." outside the courtroom, nancy garrido's attorney gave an accounting of some of the things that nancy said in her statement to the court. >> every time i look in the mirror, i don't like what i see. i stole your life, jaycee. and i can give you explanations but they sound like excuses and there is no excuse for what i did. i did an evil thing. and in no words that i can express can ever account for
