tough day in san jose. the last day on the job for dozens of police officers laid off by the budget that takes effect tomorrow. kristy seifkin joins us from san jose police department. >> reporter: starting at clock today dozens of officers -- at 8:00 today dozens of officers will turn in their badges at the police department. they are some of hundreds of city workers laid off due to the budget cuts. this is the tenth year in a row that san jose is in a budget deficit. last year they approved a plan to control runaway pension costs. despite a 10% pay cut imposed on all city workers, the city still has to lay off hundreds of employees. now, these cuts include a total of 528 filled positions, about 70 of those police officers. and layoffs were made to help close that $115 million budget deficit. now, the cuts in law enforcement come at a time when crime is at a high in san jose. this year alone, already 28 homicides in the city and many are concerned about how the cuts will affect gang violence and theft. and

coming out of downtown san jose, traffic moves great. a couple of headlights northbound 280 approaching the 880 interchange. looks great all the way out towards cupertino. and the bay bridge usually our slowest spot at least a little later on in the morning commute looks great so far. no metering lights and really a nice easy ride across the upper deck. i'm not seeing any roadwork on westbound 80 heading into san francisco. all the approaches nice and quiet, as well. 18 minutes, that means everything is moving at top speeds from the carquinez bridge to the maze. if you are coming down the eastshore freeway, no delay at all through berkeley. marin county, roadwork from novato wrapped up ahead of schedule on both sides of 101 and quick ride across the span of the golden gate bridge so no issues there. likely around 5:00 they should do the lane change. as play kansas city tonight at 7:05 but now you are good to go in either direction. so if you have a flight at oakland airport the headlights are heading southbound towards hegenberger so it'
