but i want to bring in sanjay gupta is on the line with me now. sanjay, we appreciate you hopping on, and nick charles knew this was coming and he knew it was coming fairly soon, did he not? >> oh, yeah, he knew for sure. it was not even two years ago that he was diagnosed, and he went through chemotherapy for some time. he was getting treatment, but it was in january, t.j., where the chemotherapy was just making him so sick, they decided to, you know, stop his treatments at that point and he knew this was coming, but, you know, t.j., it's one of those things. i think everyone expected one day to get this news, but it still comes as a shock when it actually happens. it certainly did for me this morning, and i think for a lot of other people as well. and it's, you know, it's tough, but he really taught people a lot of lessons over the last two years about how to live life when you know your time is limited. >> and remind our viewers, and i know a lot of people -- and they did. i want you to know, i wasn't able to talk to you about until here now, s

sanjay gupta is here with a closer look. as we look at these photos, is there any way we can determine what this means about her recovery? >> this is the first time we're obviously seeing her in six months. you've seen this photo now. she looks great. keeping great eye contact with the camera. great smile. couple of things to point out quickly, kiran, from a medical, ne. rosurgical perspective. it's this area here we focused so much on, where that bone is removed. this picture taken before she had that bone substitute placed back in. she will shael have a more normal contour and scars up here and down here as well, typical tracheostomy scar. this is obviously just one picture. she looks pretty good overall in terms of how she is doing, what -- the fact that she's able to actually maintain. >> we look at these pictures and think, wow, she looks great. she's smiling. everybody has been talking about those pictures. what does it say or what do we know, i guess, about her cognitive skills? >> it's interesting. we know, for examp

sanjay gupta. >> what do we know about loughner's current mental state? has anything changed since he was declared unfit to stand trial in may? >> it doesn't sound like it. he's been in the hospital. there's most recently this question of medicating him. that prompted this entire discussion about whether he could be medicated. it sounds like he still has some of the same issues that have led to this -- hospitalization in the first place, having the schizophrenic, paranoid delusional sort of behavior, not being in touch with reality and unable to confer or actually have conversations with his lawyers that are meaningful. >> and how successful are anti-psychotic medications that behavior that he was throwing chairs, spitting on his lawyers? >> it can be very effective, in fact. this whole idea of putting someone back in touch with reality, making them more cognizant, organizing their thinking in some ways. there's been plenty of evidence now to show that these medications can do this. these sort of outbursts that he had in the courtroom at the time that we

sanjay gupta said there's no cause for panic. he explains why in the daily dose. >> i think the risk for further infection is small. there may be a few more but certainly not many. we know the people who developed this infection so far are people who traveled to germany. this isn't occur by secondary infection, it's more by primary contact, people in germany. also more attention on this now, vigilance about food being pulled from shelves. people paying more attention. i think we'll see many more infections in the united states. we know this rare strain of e. coli has been a particularly nasty bug. 12 countries have been affected and 600 of those 2200 people have developed serious complication of this. something known as hemolitic syndrome. which can be fatal a. we know that 70% of people who developed that complication have been women. we don't know why that is. it could be because of the food choices that women are making, and those food choices being that potential source of contamination. i think what is most fascinating about

sanjay gupta is in atlanta. sanjay, is there a risk to people in this country? american airlines was not serving salads on its international flights trying to make sure that whatever it was contained there? >> well, at this point, i think the risk is pretty small. there were four people affected by this. they were people who traveled to germany and traveled back to the united states. that's typically how it is going to get spread. it has spread through 12 different countries over there. a lot of people are focused in on this to figure out from where it is coming. a heightened sense of vigilance. the risk of people getting it in this country is small, certainly, from person to person. now that all these warnings have been sort of raised, i think beyond these four people, it will be unlikely you are going to see many more cases. >> the outbreak has sickened thousands of people so far. i believe that you had mentioned also this was a particularly virulent strain of e. coli. is it unusual for so many people to be ill and more than two dozen people to die? >> i think

sanjay gupta, reporting from downtown atlanta, surrounded by what is the largest piece of community folk art anywhere in the world. it's the aids memorial quilt. 200 x 200 feet roughly, just a small fraction of it. the last time the entire quilt was on display was back in 1996. you know, we don't see the whole quilt that much anymore. for many people, they're led to believe that the aids epidemic is starting to vanish. that isn't the case. june 1981, a set of case reports from the centers for disease control and prevention. five men in los angeles with a rare type of pneumonia. their immune systems ruined. they, quote, did not know each other and had no known contacts. eventually, all five died. since then, more than 25 million people have died of hiv/aids around the world and 33 million people right now are living with this disease. 1 million of them here in this country. one of those men is cleave jones. in many ways he is responsible for this quilt that you see behind me. we're going to be talking to him later in the show. we'll also talk to sharon stone, a celebrity activist who for

sanjay gupta, reporting from downtown atlanta, from centennial park in downtown atlanta, surrounded by what is the largest piece of community folk art anywhere in the world. it's the aids memorial quilt. 200 x 200 feet roughly, just a small fraction of it. the last time the entire quilt was on display was back in 1996. you know, we don't see the whole quilt that much anymore. for many people, they're led to believe that the aids epidemic is starting to vanish. that isn't the case. june 1981, a set of case reports from the centers for disease control and prevention. five men in los angeles with a rare type of pneumonia. their immune systems ruined. they "did not know each other and had no known contacts." eventually, all five died. since then, more than 25 million people have died of hiv/aids around the world and 33 million people right now are living with this disease. 1 million of them here in this country. one of those men is cleve jones. in many ways he is responsible for this quilt that you see behind me. we're going to be talking to him later in the show. we'll also talk to sharon

sanjay gupta. >> sanjay, the fact she's been released from the hospital and is going to begin outpatient soon, what does that tell you about the progress of her recovery? >> reporter: i think it's definitely a good sign. there's no definitive milestone to say absolutely now go from in patient rehab to outpatient rehab. practically speaking from a medical standpoint it probably means she doesn't need acute medical care, the kind of care that a hospital provides anymore. doesn't need 24-hour nursing supervision. but also this idea that someone is ready to graduate, to move on to things that are more easily done in the home. things that are focused on the behavior that's associated with increasingly independent living. so it's not a definitive milestone, but ail indicators are that it's a pretty good thing. >> i want to put up if we can the new picture that was taken of her a couple days ago that was released. the indentation you see on the left side of her face, what is that? >> this is the area where you're talking about where part of the skull, part of the bone there was in fact removed.

sanjay gupta joins us now from atlanta and they really are remarkable pictures, sanjay. to the average eye you can barely tell that she was shot point blank in the head. >> yeah. it's true. you know, there's a lot of things you take notice of when you look at the pictures. looking at her overall, obviously she's making eye contact with the camera, she's smiling, really as you point out, looks great. there are a few of the things that are worth pointing out here, specifically, though, in terms of, you know, some specific things. we've been talking about this area of her head, for some time now. the left side of her head. you can see the depressed area. that's where the bone was removed, kiran, what we've been talking about. the skin closed over that area. really no bone underneath that part. this picture was taken before she had that bone substitute placed back in. if you look really closely over here, you can see scars as well. that's probably from where the actual initial injury was. and then just simple things like down here in her neck, that's a pretty classic looking

sanjay gupta has been following this story. sanjay, should americans be worried? >> randi, it appears people of the united states probably are not that much at risk any longer. we know that four people were infected, but they had all traveled to germany. but because of the fact that there's so much attention on this, an increased sense of vigilance and people paying more attention, it's unlikely we'll see many more cases here in the united states. we know this is a rare form of e coli, a particularly what we call veer land form, 2200 people affected in 12 countries, and more than 600 also developed a pretty significant complication of this infection. something known as hus. where your blood doesn't clot, your kidneys shut down. more than 600 people developed that. 70% of them were women that developed this complication. and 60% of people who developed the infection overall were women. so for some reason, women seem to be more affected by this, perhaps because of the food choices they're making. so far, those bean sprouts people have been talking about, the testing
