we're here with supervisors got scott wiener. he started his first term this january. we are going to get to know him and talk about the issues facing the city. welcome. thank you for joining us today. tell us about your background, where you grew up, went to school, and what kind of jobs to have had. >> i grew up in the philadelphia area, in new jersey. i went to school up and down the east coast. i went to undergrad at duke university. i went to law school at harvard. after clerking for a judge, i came out here in 1997. i have been here for the last 14 years. i have always lived in the castro. i am an attorney. i started out in private practice. i settle private law firm during complex commercial litigation. in 2002, and moved over to the sentences the city attorney's office where i worked on the trial team doing trials for the city, handling my own cases, and supervising a team of attorneys as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? >> i always assumed i would go back to the philadelphia area since that is where my family is. i was always interested in

scott wiener has also expressed a great deal of concern over this as well as finding revenue for maintaining our level of street tree maintenance. if you would like to express any comments now? ok. a couple of questions raised by members of the public. one was related to if there was a plan -- there is -- to relinquish the responsibility for treatments. would that be a tree by 3 basis, or is it done by street? -- tree basis, or is it done by the street? >> good morning, supervisors. ed rifkin. i am sorry i was not able to be here at the beginning of the hearing. as to the process of relinquishing, we will only relinquish as we bring them into good condition. if they have been recently pruned, that is a requirement of the public works code, something we would want to do in any case. it will be somewhat tree by threree. often, it could be a block or stretch of a street. technically speaking coming it is a tree by tree. then we would notify the property owner when we have a tree in good condition ready for look relinquishment. supervisor avalos: but it looks like you will be looking at that in

scott wiener. >> i could tell you stories of them from law school, but i will not. it is great to work with david to fight for our community, hiv funding. supervisor campos and i were at a regional transportation meeting. a bunch of tea party people came out and told us we were working for the u.n. and were communists and all that. i thought for the millionth time much i love san francisco and could not wait to get back. [applause] i remember in the early 1990's shortly after i came out, marching in my first pride parade in philadelphia with my parents. fast forward almost 20 years, i think of how proud i am to represent district 8 on the board of supervisors and to be marching on sunday with my community representing district 8. have a wonderful pride weekend. enjoy. i was joined for this event by commissioners scott wiener and david comps on who also represent us on the m.t.c. we also have representatives from the mayor's office, housing and land use as well as management staff. we had a wagering of discussion about the direction of this planning effort for the bay area and had a chance to deliver a unified message. it was consist went discussions that took place at our own transportation authority board meetings. the amount of growth targeted would require major investments in transportation infrastructure and the region will have to make those commitments to san francisco. if the city is to commit to absorbing that growth and if the development of alternative development should be accompanied by discussion and how the funds are likely to be distributed to transportation projects. in other words we signal the city's willing tons accommodate growth would be shaped by the region's willingness to reward us and other jurisdictions that do the right thing and that they should come in the form of more money to san francisco. this is a groundbreaking e

i wanted to thank supervisor scott wiener for bringing this up. as we are nearing our celebration of lbgt pride, that we make this an issue of celebration. i wanted to take the opportunity to recognize our very own clerk of the board of supervisors. i wanted to thank the clerk for the participation. for those of you that were not aware of that, it is a fully supported seven-day ride from san francisco to los angeles. it took place june 3 through june 9. basically, it is an effort that has been going on for years to put an end to the pandemic of suffering that has been caused by aids. i wanted to thank c thelerk -- the clerk for expanding her well earned a well-deserved vacation time on that. the other item is an item that outlines what we believe is the focus of the work of the budget and legislative analyst's. it is an item that will be heard of the government audits and oversight committee. the last item is the human rights commission and handling complaints about noncompliance by city departments and agencies with the ordinance. the rest, i sub

regardless, i do look up to scott wiener. the parts i go to, the libraries that i go to are largely in district 8. the department of public works has two main areas of responsibility. one is the design, construction, and repair of police and fire stations, hospitals. that work is largely -- the work we do is largely capital-funded, thanks to the generosity of the voters and past elections in supporting general obligation bonds. we actually have a lot of good work going on. we are opening several libraries this year. we have a week -- we got the second parts bond past eight years ago. we finished laguna honda hospital. we are now building a new police quarters in mission bay and renovating more than a dozen fire stations around the city. good news on the capital front. the other area of responsibility for the department of public works is the design, construction, repair, maintenance regulation of the public rights of way, namely the streets and sidewalks of the city. the picture is not as good. in terms of the capital side st
