the fire is burning just northwest of fairfield, excuse me, north east of fairfield. coming out of the northwest and blowing the smoke this way down towards the air base. police is not blowing it down towards fairfield, 81 degrees near the fire typically is a little harder this time of year here is a look at some of the other when speed information for the area. 69 per hour winds, 14 in antioch. when the wind is starting to pick up. it typically does get breezy around this time. the wind will start to die down this evening i want to show this picture. this is a satellite image that i snapped about one hour ago. these images are taken from space typically used for clouds. but you can make out that smoke from the fire just to give you an idea of how extensive it is right now. >> the alarm fire at macro plastics in fairfield is now contained. the video that you are looking at was taken earlier today we should tell you that there are still filled--flareups. but it is contained. just moments ago we were told that the cause was accidental involving employees that were outsi

we want to go to fairfield where they are having a conference after a giant fire. the company makes plastic containers and tons of them burned in this huge inferno and luckily the firefighters, a crew crew of firefighters that kept this thing contained to just containers because otherwise it would spread to the building so none of the employees was hurt. they think it happened from one of the employees lighting with a torch or something and caught a plastic container on fire, either a torch or lighter they were using and jackie is waiting for the press conference and as we look at the damage do you think they will talk about the cause or actually jackie is setting up as we are waiting. you can see this entire fence melted from that huge, just a fire ball. we were above from a chopper and you could feel the flames and see them for miles and they had dozens of firefighters out there. so as we look at the twisted metal from the fire. we are hoping they will talk about the investigation and what does it mean, work as usual or what they will be doing from the cleanup, w

fairfield fire officials were here with video cameras taking video. some and response that they cannot turn over the video because that is considered evidence. that is not to say anything suspicious happened here but this is a monster job of getting to the bottom of how this started. >> what is the plan that firefighters have at this point, john,? have they shared with you and feel they're making progress? it sounds like things goring better now than they were, let's say an hour ago? >> well, the plan has been, which is apparently standard procedure to, douse the area with water which is what they've been doing as well as a special foam. that is what they're going to have to do until it burns down. and there is some and i asked what the estimated time what it might be. they were not sure. and workers moved out a number of the plastic bins were in the back area to prevent them from catching fire. but this is still very, very flammable materials stacked up in back of the area. we're talking probably i'd guess, you know hours throughout the evening. >> a

anne makovec is at the scene in fairfield. anne, why did it take so long to put out the fear. >> reporter: there were only three fire hydrants here in the area so firefighters did have trouble getting enough water here to the scene. but the main problem is what was burning. it was these plastic crates and it just kind of erupted almost like a tire fire would. you can see the scene here behind me this chain-link fence was melted because it was just burning so hot yesterday afternoon. and if you look a little to the left you can see those plastic crates there. that is what was burning. they were stacked about two stories high. and that's why there was a real concern for air quality yesterday because of the chemicals involved in these sorts of plastic crates. the fire broke out at around 1:00 yesterday afternoon here at macro plastics in fairfield. it's very close to travis air force base and as you can see in this video it was huge thick, black smoke could be seen for more than 50 miles away. the fire was fueled by these plastic

we're on the scene where the fire burned in fairfield. now, we're getting a really good look at the damage it did. check out the chain link fence, the fire burned right through it. firefighters say it was a hot, intense fire. it was burning at a plastics manufacturing company. it burned up to 30,000 plastic bins that created toxic smoke that forced officials to make a shelter in place order. the sky is beautiful, blue skies clear days. residents can feel safe to go outside. that is what the environmental director is telling us. firefighters say the fire was an accident. it was started when workers were using an open flame to do some regular maintenance. no one was hurt in this fire. it took them many hours to get it out. it started at 1:00. they aggressively fought it until about 9:30 last night. firefighters were here until midnight. none was hurt but they will be cleaning up. >>> we've got the fog, if you are headed in the city. some of it quite dense, sunshine all right lr in east bay valleys. we're going to warm up quicker today and f
