so enter chris christie. earlier today, msnbc analyst jonathan alter lit up the political internet with this tweet. breaking, chris christie is conducting focus groups in preparation for a possible run for 2012. reporting later his groups were doing their own focus groups and made them seem semi-authorized by christie, adding it was just wishful thinking. what about paul ryan? as wisconsin congressman paul ryan comes to a final decision about running for president, several top national conservatives are encouraging him to join the race. ryan is expected to decide on the run in the next two weeks. if it's not chris christie, if it's not paul ryan, is there anyone, someone else out there on the right ready to run, ready to enter this race? now, we've seen more than a few polls showing the winning republican seems to be none of the above. but sure, it would be easier for the white house if rick perry or michele bachmann top the republican ticket, but there is so far no democratic primary in this election cycle.

new jersey governor chris christie sugged it could be tens of billions of dollars in new jersey alone. we're joined by bertha coombs. some have said this could be one of the most costly hurricanes in this country ever? >> it's too early to put an estimate on. some analysts say it's costly but at this point it doesn't look like it will rank among the top ten hurricanes. obviously the biggest being katrina at over $100 billion. and hurricane andrew back in 1992 in florida at $45 billion. this one is in the range of $7 billion in losses and less than half of that actually ensured. remember, you have the issues you're seeing there with the water. flooding is covered under separate insurance as opposed to wind damage. if you're a homeowner you know this is a big distinction when there's a hurricane in particular that's what's covered by the other insurers. the biggest damage of course, is where the storm first made landfall down in the carolinas. the estimates right now are looking like about $1.5 billion there. again, these are early estimates. and then the big estimates appear on the nor

we're going to hear from new jersey governor chris christie. he'll give us the latest on that situation, very hard hit. he will take to the podium. we'll bring it to you live as soon as it happens. >>> meantime, slaervermont has n a big hit. the governor joins us now on the telephone. governor what is the situation in your state right now? >> well, we're being absolutely pummeled in the state of vermont. irene is dumping huge loads of water on us. we virtually have flooding from the southern end of the state to it northern end. it's now running up to the northern end of the state. virtually the entire state is impacted. we have over 100 roads closed. extraordinary washouts of bridges, roads, homes. one loss of what we believe to be a loss of life. we're still hopeful that a young woman was standing next to the river in wilmington and last seen by her boyfriend floating down the river. we haven't been able to locate her, or her body. so we're just really in tough shape up here as so many others are doing what the states are. >> and we understand

new jersey governor chris christie says today is the last day to prepare. the weather channel's adam burg is in asbury park and mike taibbi is in sag harbor, new york. let's begin with the situation where you are, adam. >> reporter: it's the calm before the storm. it's a warm day. temperatures in the 80st. this is the calmest moment. as early as 5:00 p.m. tonight we're going to close this beach down. it will be closed at least until 9:00 a.m. monday. hurricane watches extending into new england. a hurricane warning means 36 hours into that particular spot you can expect hurricane force winds. we're talking a day, day and a half. it's a large system. it's lost a little steam as far as sustained winds. it's still a strong category two hurricane with wind speeds at 105 miles per hour. the problem with this system it's so large that those swells and that surge will be rolling in. we'll see a high tide saturday night and another high tide saturday morning and that would probably be the worst of it. >> adam, thank you for the update. i just received a note that p

chris christie, i didn't even feel like i needed to say the state because we all know chris christie. and in michigan, rick snyder, new republican governor of michigan just passed sweeping reforms that are going to effect every kid in the school system in detroit. this is just something, to me, that the millennials get implicitly, and i think we just need to start, start really screaming it from mountaintops when we have the next opportunity which will be in the next presidential election cycle. the other issue that always ranks highly are with millennials is the environment. and i argue in my book that we need to make a very strong case for a conservative environmentalism. incidentally, the republican party has a pretty good history with environmentalism; teddy roosevelt, richard nixon. i think that we can talk about climate change, and we can acknowledge that climate change is happening, but it's also an inexact science. we know that the cover of "newsweek" in 1975 showed that the globe was going to freeze over. we can acknowledge and talk about it in if a reasonable way -- in a rea

well joining me right now, we have new jersey governor chris christie who has weathered through this storm. governor, a very good morning. let's talk about how good it is in new jersey. where do sthangsd? -- where do things stand? >> the storm is almost passing out of new jersey. the northern half of our state is covered now still by the storm. but we're about half a million people who have lost power and that number is growing a little bit. about 15,000 people in 45 different shelters. 250 roads are subject to closure. but, we're able to move a million people off the jersey shore in 24 hours without incident and i think that that helped us present significant loss of life along the shore line. so, so far we're cautiously optimistic about the way things are at the shore. we're going in to make an assessment. what we're concerned about is inland flooding and that flooding could be record flooding in new jersey because of all the rain and the fact that we've had one of the wettest augusts on record in new jersey before hurricane irene. >> i know it's hard with this storm drain systems
