dr. sanjay gupta is on the frontlines in kenya. sanjay gupta starts now. >>> welcome to a special edition of sgmd. the frontlines of kenya. we are over the border from somalia. we heard reports of people literally starving to death here. 30,000 children over the last three months. millions more at risk of simply dying because they don't have enough food. it is hard to believe and hard to take. that is what happens when you have the largest refugee camp in the world. the numbers are getting worse. they say 2,000 more people coming to the camp every day. 400,000 people are already here. keep the simple fact in mind. this camp was designed for 90,000 people. this entire situation made worse by the ongoing civil war in somalia. the militant groups have made it worse to get aid across the border. you come to the camps and meet the mothers and fathers and daughters. they are not too different from people in your neighborhoods. i met a father whose love for his boys demonstrated what any father would do. it will make you truly understand

bring in our chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta. it's amazing gabrielle giffords looked as good as she did but you could tell she wasn't using one of her arms, had trouble, you know, after a long wave, and so as you observed her, from these pictures, sanjay, how is she doing? >> well, it's exactly that. it's worth pointing out the beginning point of all this, january 8th, about three quarters of people who suffer gunshot wounds to the head like she had even survive. keep that in mind as you look at these images again. a little context. looks like she's acknowledging people, recognizing people, moving as you say just to the left side of her body. although her right leg is probably strong enough she's able to obviously maintain her weight, her right arm not moving at all. part of her rehab for some time. we've seen her go through that rehab, learning to right with her left hand instead of her right hand. these are things that take place there. she was saying thank you. it seemed like a lot. mouthing those words. i think as well as you

dr. sanjay gupta reports the last heart attack. joins us is sanjay gupta, our chief medical correspondent. sanjay, it's really looking forward to your documentary, but this is an amazing story you have to tell about a lot of people, but the former president of the united states particularly. >> i think, wolf, the thing that was strike suggest arguably he had access to the best health care in the world. certainly for all the time he was president and then afterward as well, without his knowledge really, he was sort of developing significant heart disease to the point where he had to have surgery. how could that happen? if he had access to the best care in the world. what is the lesson for anybody who worriys about heart disease? i asked these questions of former president clinton and doctors and what he is doing to stay healthy now. >> i was lucky i didn't die of a heart attack. >> former president clinton like too many people was busy. for years he ignored warning signs from his heart. in 2004 during an exhausting book tour, there

our dr. sanjay gupta is here to tell us what he noticed most when he saw the congresswoman. sanjay? >> randi, as you look at that video, one thing to keep in mind from a medical standpoint is that three quarters of those who had the injury she had, don't survive. to see her walking on the floor puts that into a little bit more of a context. there are certain things i'm looking for specifically including fact that her right arm is not moving. if you look at what she's mouthing to people around her, it's short sentences, thank you, i love you. she obviously has very good attentiveness there. recognizes her name and acknowledges lots of people. it's quite remarkable and as the rehab doctors put it, she's in the top 1 percentile for people who recover after an injury like this. the rehab she was going through was pretty extensive in terms of trying to strengthen that right side of the body, in terms of trying to teach her to communication, to express not only through the spoken word but through the written word, the gestures. this is all part of speech. her come pre hegs has never been

dr. sanjay gupta is joining me. he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, correct? there are questions about his health. >> there hasn't been a lot of information coming forward. this is rare. about 2,500 cases a year in the country. not a lot of data on this thing. back in 2003, he was diagnosed. for a while, he did not want to have surgery. he wanted to treat it with diet. in 2004, he had the operation. he lost a lot of weight. >> can you treat something like that with a diet? is that something you would advise? >> i think what we know this is a type of tumor if removed initially, a lot of patients are cured. not just treated, but cured. most doctors want to recommend the surgery. it is rare. there is not a lot of data. he needed the operation in 2004 and he lost weight. the tumors produced a lot of hormones and he lost weight. he had the liver transplant in 2009. obviously, i read the same statement you did. it is hard to decipher what that means. is the liver transplant failing? is the hormone problem the reason? who knows? >> it is a guessing game. is it fair t
