we'll go straight to north carolina right now where northbound's mark potter is live for us from nags head. it was looking pretty bad there last hour. it looks even worse now. >> yeah. these are the worst winds and the strongest rain bands that we've seen since this storm approached this area. the weather forecasters are telling us it's going to get worse before it gets better. as the eye approaches this area. that's not very comforting. we're told that the sustained winds here have measured at about 60 miles an hour, but i can tell you that we're feeling now gusts over that. the waves are coming in heavy too right now, and they're approaching the dunes that protect the pocketed areas from the ocean. we haven't seen any breaches yet, but i won't be surprised if we see some because the water is coming in very strong now. there's a house over my area where some of the shingles are starting to peel off, and we heard from our photographers out on the road that he is starting to see that in other areas as well. as for other damage, the news so far is relatively good. at least for now. the

our report tonight from nbc's mark potter. >> reporter: from coast to coast, it's been a disastrous year weatherwise in the u.s. the worst was in joplin, missouri, which was demolished by a huge tornado in may with 160 people killed, 8,000 homes and businesses destroyed. during a rash of tornadoes this spring, many other cities were hit. >> in any year we typically see weather extremes. this year, however, we've seen the extreme of the extremes. >> reporter: in the southwest, extreme heat brought wildfires, drought, crop and livestock losses. flooding caused widespread damage in the upper midwest and mississippi valley. and early in the year, tons of heavy snow ground parts of the northeast and midwest to a halt. and now we're in hurricane season, where an above-average number of storms predicting. so far this year, only a weak tropical storm has hit the united states. but we are now entering the statistical height of hurricane season. the weather this year has killed more than 600 people nationwide. and already nine separate weather events have each caused more than $1 billion in damage

mark potter starting us off on the outer banks. let's move north along the seaboard, another big vacation destination, ocean city, maryland where the storm is washing out a lot of plans, but of course much more serious than that. nbc's tom costello is there. >> reporter: it's an empty place here, brian. ocean city sits on the northern barrier island, they are expecting irene will come over the top of us from south to north, from virginia to delaware, it's packed with tourists this year. this time however, this year with a mandatory evacuation order now in effect, hundreds of thousands have clogged the highways to move inland, they have left behind virtual ghost towns of empty streets and boardwalks and hotels. we even found the coast guard station also boarding up, preparing to ride out the storm. the last time ocean city ordered this kind of evacuation was in 1985 for hurricane gloria. but emergency managers fear this time it could be different. >> we're going to get a lot of rain, we're going to get a lot of wind and we're going

that is where mark potter is standing by live for us. what's the latest there? >> reporter: as you can see, they are in clean up mode here. this is a restaurant, the sunset grill and raw bar. they got hit pretty hard by the storm. they're rebuilding and cleaning up. they say they're going to be back open by wednesday. the goal of everyone in this area is to try to get as many businesses open for labor day to try to recapture some of the tourist trade that they lost here at the very end of their very important summer season. a short time ago we talked with the owner of this restaurant about how the water here from the sound came over and washed over his deck. let's listen to what he had to say. >> we had our whole dining deck destroyed with the backside of the storm. it wasn't the front side that usually wreaks the havoc. winds took the deck and piled it up against the building. >> this area here right by his restaurant is where they're trying to fix the road. some of the water came up and undercut the road. there's a more serious problem like this on the souther

nbc's mark potter is live in north carolina along the outer banks. mark? mark, what is it like out there in the ground there, has it already started raining? >> yeah, all day, it has been nice, reverend. it's been calm but nice and calm, nothing going on until about half hour ago and everything just changed dramatically. the rain started falling and wind kicked up. and this is the way it's going to be for all through tomorrow. at an elevated rate. these are the joupter bands of the storm. into tonight we are expected to have gale force winds and then tomorrow we will start with the hurricane force winds at the height of it somewhere around noon, early tomorrow afternoon. the biggest concern here, actually has to do with the water, the waves, from the ocean. there is a particular fear that managers had here. that that storm, if it went just to the west of where i'm standing now in the outer banks, just west of us, we can have a peculiar problem. we can have waves coming in from the atlantic ocean with the first counter clockwise winds. then as hurricane pus

mark potter on the outer banks of north carolina. mark, thanks. as i said we're in point beach, new jersey, president pleasant beach at the river inlet. a place on this shoreline that any veteran of this shoreline knows well. and to look at it tonight it is an otherwise beautiful late s e summer evening. we have guys on jet skis and families with small children patting around in the tidal pools. but the problem is these looks don't count for anything because it's about to go south. in a big hurry. with us now, the man in charge of emergency preparation and dealing with all of this on behalf of his state, governor of new jersey chris christie. governor, do you feel that your warnings and some of them have been very full throated as late as this afternoon? have been heeded? i, for example, can't remember when the garden state parkway is heading one direction. the contra flow is under way tonight starting at about this point in the state going north. >> you know, brian, listen, i think we still have work to do in getting folks to heed the warning. yo

nbc's mark potter is in the town of duck on north carolina's barrier islands. mark, we see the construction, the rebuilding behind you. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: well, this is one of the two areas along highway 12 where they had problems. this is the lesser problem area. as you can see it's right next to the water way here. this is the sound. on the back end of the hurricane the water was pushed on to the road over here. it underwashed some of the road. undercut some of the road there they're fixing one of the lanes. traffic is coming through here, but it's having to connect down because of it. the worst problem is much farther south near hatterras where the water actually cut through the highway like it did back in 2003 during irene it did it again. we are hearing the only way you can get down there now is by ferryboat. it's going to be that way for a while. the rest of the island is okay. they ever getting the tourists back in here. the residents came in yesterday and the business owners came in. they're trying to get everything ready for labor
