here's i-95 in washington, d.c. the shake would be really on the west end of richmond, virginia, to the east of charlottesville. that's where 5.8 is a very strong shake. we're talking about something in california that would really bring some buildings down. i can assume, and i think you all can as well, there's going to be some damage here, either whether it's to buildings, it might be the structures, infrastructure, including some of the bridges and overpasses will all have to be inspected west of richmond on i-64 as a pretty big shake. . we still have the depth. back up here. this is all real time. this is literally just coming in. depth of only 3.7 miles. that is a shallow quake. that means that you don't have a lot of padding. you don't have, let's say, a 20 mile or 30-mile padding of rocks that maybe won't -- shakes a lot down here but not at the surface. when the surface and the shake is only 3.7 miles away, that was pretty good. go ahead, dave. go on the magic one. see what we have here for you. there you go

we are in a part here in washington, d.c. where nbc news is, and we are right next door to the department of homeland security in northwest washington and a high point of the city, and several dhs employees are outside of their building as well. i talked to one of them on the cell phone who said they were ordered outside of their buildings. they are in an old u.s. navy facility hastily converted into the offices of the homelandment they say they have not heard of any damage and the response around town has varied. i talked to folks at the u.s. supreme court and they were not evacuated and the justices are not around in the summer, but a lot of the staff is there. the capitol was and people in parts of the pentagon were and other federal agencies, it seems to to vary, but we have not heard of any reports of damage, but it is so unusual here. my colleague kelly o'donnell who spent many years in los angeles, it was nothing to her, and no doubt that it was an earthquake to her, but for those of us who lived in washington for deca

we do need to have a term limit in washington, d.c.. as a matter of fact, one of our constituents down here lives in florida which in atlantis, florida. he has a plan for the house of representatives that max's you out at 12 years of legislative service. in the house, it messes you up from six to eight years. the longer people are in the sea, the less connection may have to the people. they never intended us to have career politicians. they intended us to have citizen servants who went to washington, d.c. they made certain pieces of legislation and came back and had to live under them. that is what we have to get back to.
