the protest scheduled for here at the powell station at 4:30. so if your train even goes through the station, be aware there could be more disruptions tonight, although i did just speak with a bart spokesman and he said they will try to do everything to stop any of the stations from being closed. the goal of the protestors today, though, is to try to force bart's hand to get passengers allowed to ride free. this is one of a string of protests that we have seen in recent weeks since july 3 when bart police shot and killed a man at the civic center station. and then at one of the those protests, bart shut down underground cell service and that just amped up the protest after that. on august 22, police arrested 35 protestors mainly on two charges: failure to obey a peace officer and for illegally blocking a right of way. fines are between $100 and $200 for those offenses and bart said it spent a lot on the protests so far about $300,000 to deal with them a number likely to grow. so now bart's board president, bob franklin, wants to raise the fines

that meeting is being held at 6:00 this wednesday at the eco center at parents had park. finally, a bit of press on this. we just want to make a special effort to recognize the passing of one of our former and a long serving members of the port, mr. eugene gartland. he first served as a port commissioner from 1972 through 1974. you then became an executive director. unfortunately, he passed away this past july 23 after a very long illness. he is survived by two daughters and four grandchildren, and numerous friends throughout the city. at his request, a very small funeral. you may know that he was appointed by mayor dianne feinstein. at the time, he was a maritime attorney and was the senior partner at a law firm. he was then general counsel for a major maritime organization. during his tenure as the port director and at the commission, he did a lot of amazing things. first and foremost was the purchase of the bethlehem shipyard, which is now our longest serving west coast shipyard, which we are extraordinarily proud of. by doing this, he was able to ensure we had a thriv
