oakland. and police were ready with their riot gear. although the are protest was pretty peaceful. the march was pretty peaceful. there were reports however, of protesters, some protesters breaking some parking meters and also breaking some window, and spraying buildings with anti-police slogans and police have not had that much of a presence here at the plaza. and they really didn't confront people during that march. but for the fire department, it has been a different story. and the firefighters have been here every day, performing four inspections. since fire hazards were a main concern before that camp was raided on tuesday. and now protesters obviously have big plans for this wednesday. they have been talking about it for several days. a citywide strike is in the works. and they've gotten numerous employees on board. including members of the labor counsel. and the longshoremen and warehouse union and members of the teachers union. and they have three mass gatherings planned for wednesday

at the occupy oakland encampment. we will go back live to the plaza where charles clifford is monitoring the situation. >>reporter: we are live right in front of oakland city hall. as you said the protesters have moved back into the plaza. about 20 minutes ago they had been rallying at the amphitheater and talk about what happened last night in the night before. they also talked about where they wanted to go from here. if you look behind the oak tree, there are a dozen tents that are set up. a few of those reappeared after the oakland city police went through and clear them out. here in the last 45 minutes to an hour more people have started showing up. we do not know if there will be more people coming in. usually about 6:00 p.m. is when the bulk of the protesters have showed up. but everything is extremely peaceful they have been sitting there quietly listening to the speaker's. but there is none of that energy that we saw with in the last couple of days. we do not know if it will escalate beyond this it seems to be

saying that they are mostly in east and west oakland. the interim police chief says more police and city resources will go to that area. >> it's not just the police, no, they're going to see other city workers, city leadership, the school district, all the other efforts we mentioned today are going to be in that area. >> the reality is if we take care of these hundred blocks, crime goes down throughout the city. these are the blocks where the young people that are committing the crimes come from. >> the mayor says the other city programs like graffiti abatement, better lighting, will also go to that 100 block area. oakland police are investigating the 85th and 86th homicides of the year. there were 95 homicides in the city all of last year. >>> also, overnight in san francisco, investigators are searching for the person who shot at chp officers during a chase that ended with a crash. it happened on samson street not far from the transamerica building. police got a call around 11:30 last night that someone shot at a chp car during a chase

and he got shot in the streets of oakland. >>reporter: olson was unresponsive and had to be interest baited when he arrived at the hospital and now is communicateing in writing and breathing on his own. doctors are hopeful he will make a full recovery despite fractured skull and major swelling on the left side of the brain. >> that swelling pushes the nerves together and makes it not function as well. writ now that portion of his brain not functioning as well is his ability to speak. other than that, he's fine. >>reporter: the hospital says hundreds of people from around the world have called to wish olson well. new so-called faith of the up movement here in the bay area seem to be taken aback by his new role. >> he is surprised at the interest when we share with him that the world is watching. >>reporter: but the people of the up movement are not surprised. they say olson is an inspiration and they hope he will inspire those who have yet to join the demonstration. >> his life is on hold because he stood up for what he believe

oakland has too many schools. the reason they are closing down the schools is because they have 101 schools for 38,000 students. >> do you remember a few years ago there was a small school movement and bill gates and others supported it and gave money to places like oakland to create smaller community-based schools. is this now kind of a legacy. some of the same schools are going to have to be closed? >> some are merging and becoming one school again. there are seven high schools. many of them are located on two campuses. those schools were separated into seven different schools and they are bringing them back together. that was an experiment that brought a lot of money into oakland from the bill gates foundation, and when they said this isn't working out so well. we're not going to support small schools, they left and they left this legacy, as you said, of all these small schools that oakland can no longer afford. >> so we know the parents are out fighting for this. they don't want to be told that's happening. wh
