once the police fire the tear gas, the crowd scatters. tonight's protests are in response to this morning's oakland police raid to bust up the occupy oakland encampment at the plaza. robert lyles has been out on the streets all night long covering the story. robert, what's the latest? >> reporter: behind me is 14th and broadway and it is effectively the line in the sand, allow me to step out of the way. on the west side of 14th street are oakland police. they are determined not to allow occupy oakland demonstrators back on to city hall property. the camera slowly pans to the right, you can see that city hall and frank ogowa plaza below. surrounding all the streets of downtown for the past six hours have been occupy oakland demonstrators. many of them recently dispursed from this very intersection after police fired a number of tear gas canisters into the crowd. police saying that they were forced to fire those tear gas canisters. the crowd has swollen to approximately 800 people as we move through this six hours of tonight just before the
