allie rasmus is there with more on what crews are doing today, allie? >> reporter: well the process is supposed to get going later this morning and you can see a huge demolition truck parked on tell graph avenue and it has been closed to traffic because of a fire that happened in this apartment building right next to it. 68 people were displaced after the fire but nobody was hurt. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the owner told me this building was built back in 1916. the building is so bad that it is structurally unsafe and nobody can go inside and that's why this demolition is supposed to happen. the fire chief says it's supposed to be a partial demolition so the top floors are the ones that will be torn down and the roof has already collapsed on to the top floors. building owners reportedly want to try and keep the ground floor intact and that area you seaboarded up, that is where two area businesses were located but again this whole demolition process is supposed to take place about a week from then, live in berkeley allie rasmus

allie rasmus spoke with the san francisco election director. >> they are getting ready for what they are hoping lab busy day. >> reporter: dozens of election workers are making their way into city hall. the election director said i hopes there is a lot of turn out pause so far, estimated 2 5% of san francisco voters casted a mail in ballot but he revised that number down and he said it is closer to 16%, not 25. he said he is not sure why turnout is so low but he said maybe voters are waiting for the last minute. there is a crowded field of candidates and 16 people are running for san francisco mayor. they have had various campaign events, all of way up until the polls close. voters are here to choose a mayor and sheriff but they say this is the first time city leaders have raised doubts. >> this time around a lot of questions i have seen and received are -- is the voting method we are using in san francisco, so i don't know what that means but it is just what they have been saying. >> now it is a competitive raise, a few expressed concerns about manipulation and they will be stopping

ktvu's allie rasmus joins us now. >> the parade is still going on. i can show you the view as some of the various group the make their way down mccallister street. this looks like the hamilton society. behind them was the merge legion headed toward front of the san francisco city hall and the civic plaza. more than 500 people are taking part in this year's veterans day parade. in san francisco, they are part of 44 different groups. the first contingent in the parade were members of the san francisco gay and lesbian freedom band. they were invited to lead the parade to commemorate the repeal of don't tell, don't ask. and some are celebrating the fact that the u.s. it. >> thinks a day to celebrate. we are done with that we will be done with that. next year, we won't have anybody there and we will celebrate those who come home. >> reporter: other veterans say they are appreciative for the show of support. but as one vietnam veteran says, this is a day to reflect pond issues, the high homelessness rate and the way the economy is affecting young veterans

allie rasmus is live where there are new safety concerns this morning. allie. >> reporter: firefighters furse responded to a call about -- alarms going off in the apartment building just before 9:00 last night. and more than 11 hours later firefighters are still here. that ladder truck there were still shooting water into the sides of the building a couple minutes ago, and right now you can still see smoke coming out of that second story window. if we pan over to the top floor of the apartment building, you can see the roof classed and there's still smoke pouring out of the roof here. at its worst, this was a five- alarm fire overnight. fire crews from across the county came in to help berkeley fire put this out. fire is under control now, but again they're still putting on the hot spots this morning. there are about 40 to 50 apartment units in this building. we've contacted the red cross this morning to find out how many people were displaced by the fire because everyone had to evacuate and get out. we have not heard back from the red cross yet this mor

ktvu's allie rasmus tells us about the traveling vietnam memorial stopping here in the bay area this veteran's day weekend. >> reporter: it's a memorial meant to be seen and touch and many were looking for someone that they loved and lost in vietnam. >> a boyfriend i had when i was 19, and i remember we were going together when he went over there and never came back. >> i had three cousins go over there and two didn't come back and my anti-was never the same woman after that. >> reporter: they had a chance to search for those they never met. this is a replica of the memorial of the one in the nation's capitol the names of the 58,000 men and women who died in vietnam are etched in these walls. the traveling wall gunshot 1998 and this year --. i have a lot of mixed emotions. >> reporter: one man told us his experience makes his think about his time in vietnam and his son who is in afghanistan. >> the war we have going on compared to nam -- . >> he says it's a remainder of the sacrifices of war and the toll it takes. >> it just takes your breath away. you know? which you see all of the

allie rasmus joins us live in san francisco where voters are deciding on a new mayor, sheriff and district attorney. is everything going. >>> thely? >> reporter: so -- is everything going okay? >> reporter: so far, so good. you can hear the horns honking. but the real action for today is happening inside the basement of san francisco city hall. that's where the elections office. now, the direct off elections says so far all of the voting machines are working correctly. there are no major lines at any of the city's 409 polling places. but the director said he's surprised by one thing, early voter turnout was lower than expected. yesterday he expected it would be 25%. today he rely -- revised those turnout numbers downward. >> we're looking at 15, 16%. so it would have to be a big push to get to 50%. that surprised me. i think everyone is kind of surprised by that. >> reporter: there are 16 candidates running for san francisco mayor. voters are choosing a district attorney also and also for the first time in decades, the city will have a new sheriff. candidates took advantage of these final

ktvu's allie rasmus tells us it was an early morning raid in front of the federal reserve building on market street. >> reporter: the front of the reserve building in san francisco will you find plenty of metal barricades, but no more tents. the camp was taken down overnight. police moved in around 1:00 and broke down about a dozen tents. some people tried to hold their ground by sitting on the sidewalk. a police spokesperson wouldn't talk about the raid oncamera, but told us six people were arrested. >> they came after midnight when it was raining and they didn't expect us to come and we were setting up tents to protect himself. >> reporter: he said he was living at that federal reserve encampment for the past month and things the crackdown is about city officials saving face. >> they want too make it about the tents or some other issue, but it's not some other issue, but we're actually protests and they are preventing us from protesting. i mean they don't want us in front of federal reserve bank. >> reporter: the other occupy san francisco encampment at embarcadero remains intact at

ktvu assists allie rasmus explains why other nurses say it's a sign of security problems, while hospital officials have a different view. >> i heard screaming andd hysteria. >> a patient lashed out at one of the nurses. >> the patient had his hands around her throat and put her into a head lock and started to pummel with his fists the back of her head. >> reporter: staff members say the patient was not arrested, but moved to another part of the hospital. >> the nurse is fine, physically, other than a few bruises on her head. but mentally and emotionally she is still in shock. >> i know that the medical center is doing everything that it can to get to the bottom and examine what happened. >> reporter: this nurse says she doesn't usually work at this hospital, but says she has felt okay here so far. >> we do have policies in place when a patient started to getting get agitated. >> they can't put their hands on patients. we need a better system in place. >> reporter: the nurses' union says their members should have a say in adopting the hospital security procedures and it's one of the stick

ktvu channel 2 reporter allie rasmus is at the great mall in milpitas. i can see a lot of people behind you. >> reporter: they opened up at midnight. the shoppers really come in waves. this place opened up at midnight. it's now 5.5 hours later. now we are seeing some people coming out heading toward the exits of course with their arms loaded with shopping bags. we found one family that rented a kiddy cart. they were not shopping with any kids. they just wanted a place to store their bags. they opened up at midnight for the fourth year in a row. she told us how many people were lined up before the stores opened. >> at the minimum hundreds. we have six entrances and all six entrances opened at the same time. all six had a line. >> a lot of discounts. big discounts. >> reporter: just about all the stores here are open but so are the coffee shops and also i want to point out the restaurant. this is the first time i saw a chipolte open at 5:30 in the morning. the mall stays open until 10:00 tonight. that is nearly a 24 hour stretch. >>> the shoppers are also

live in san francisco allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. >>> 6:35. police are searching now for suspects in an overnight shooting at the former site of the main occupy oakland camp. investigators say a man was wounded around midnight at 14th and broadway. you can see here he's being rushed to high land hospital. we don't know his condition. oakland police raided the camp just one week ago. >>> the northbound lanes of highway 101 in sausalito were back open this morning after a fairy crash involving a chp car. the chp says for unknown reasons the officer lost control while responding to a backup call last night at 8:30. his patrol car crashed and burst into flames at the spencer avenue exit. the officer did escape but the chp had to close down northbound lanes because that fire triggered live rounds into the police car. the chp says the officer was taken to the hospital and believed to be okay. >>> a deadly collision in napa is under investigation. driver hit a pedestrian at silverado trail around 8:00 last night. the pedestrian died at the scene but
