park where it is a little quieter but anne makovec is at frank agawa park where protesters have ignored repeated warnings from the mayor to get out of the camp. ladies, good morning. >> frank, the tension is really building at 14th and broadway. where the crowd has been building. we have about 500 people behind me are right now, and the police are now moving in. they are surrounding the area, about a block away, in either direction. and down there, on 13th and broadway, they are staging, there is an entire line of officers right now blocking that area. and around here, if we can turn around, you can see the police vehicle there on the end of 14th and franklin, and this scene is repeated block after block. and frank agawa plaza right now. and by all accounts they will probably be moving in within the next several minutes. and now take a look at some video we shot at the coliseum. and a few hours ago. and that is where officers were staging. for this raid. hundreds of them. from oakland and surrounding departments. vans and buses lined up as well. the camp here at frank agawa has been her

anne makovec is in becker with reaction from some students. >> reporter: good morning. i think the best picture of the morning as to what went down here is the regentsaurus rex, the piece of art they built. they say they are going to build it up bigger and stronger next time. they are vowing not to end the movement even though police raided the camp at 3:30 this morning. the clean-up is going on right now at sproul plaza. you can see a big pile of debris there which was once a campsite a lot of the tents moved out. the students are gathering right now on the other side of the plaza. this may be about three dozen of them right now in a circle trying to plan out what their next move is going to be when they are going to rally here at sproul plaza next. police tore down about 20 tents last night including the artwork on the plaza. protestors say first they came on a loudspeaker and said if you're not a student you will be arrested and students were supposed to show their student ids, they gave them a five- minute warning. even though it was a peaceful raid, students weren'

but we begin with anne makovec, live at 14th and broadway where the trouble began. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. it began around midnight last night after a mainly peaceful day of protesting all over oakland. at 16th and telegraph that's where protestors tried to take over a vacant building and that is where the major clash with police began. you're look at some tear gas that police ended up firing off after protestors refused to leave the area and that is when protestors started lighting fires. they had set up a barricade around this building at 16th and telegraph with garbage and wood pallets. they set it on fire to keep police away. that just inflamed the situation. pardon the pun. even more. this is where one of the more peaceful protestors tried to put the fire out with that fire extinguisher. he was stopped by some of the protestors that were bent on anarchy. they forcibly removed him from the area. the fire extinguisher went all over the place and the fire continued for a short time of the police then started firing off these flash-bang grena

anne makovec is in oakland this morning with the early morning action. anne. >> reporter: that's right. and protestors did not immediately disperse once police started firing the tear gas. take a look at their reaction to that move by police that was lighting fires that this was their barricade around this vacant building that they have taken over on 16 and telegraph. once police fired tear gas, they set that barricade on fire. police responded with flash- bang grenades. and protestors were throwing rocks at police. it was a very chaotic scene by all accounts. in fact, some of the other more peaceful protestors were trying to stop the people that seemed ton bent on some sort of confrontation with police. so there was some infighting within the protestors, as well. all told, about 50 people were arrested. the marks are left all over downtown oakland of how things got out of control this. wall is the rite aid building and this scene with the graffiti, the scribbling all over the walls and the windows, this is repeated block after block in downtown oakland.

." >> our anne makovec just got there a few minutes ago. anne, on the telephone what can you tell us? what's going on? >> reporter: good morning. a lot of police officers standing around right now maybe 50 to 100 officers here surrounding sproul plaza. this is where they raided several campsites earlier this evening at about 3:30 this morning. there's now a pile of debris of what was once several makeshift campsites here on the plaza steps. so we have the officers standing around. they say they are treating the plazas a crime scene. some of the people that were camping and their supporters are standing on the other side of the police line right now. they are gathered, standing around trying to figure out what their next move is going to be. i have not heard any reports of any violence with this raid, which is a bit of a surprise when you look at the comparison last time when police came in last week and broke up a campsite here and there were several complaints of brutality and police using their batons on some protestors. so far, calm. we

anne makovec is in oakland, where protesters hope to close today. >>> 6:54. the strike called by occupy activists is starting. anne makovec is in oakland where protestors hope to close some businesses today and make a whole lot of noise. anne. >> reporter: yeah. we're expecting thousands of people to show up here at frank ogawa plaza. the plaza is starting to wang. you can see the encampment there behind me that's been here on and off for weeks and a lot of labor unions now joining in setting up catch as well here for this mass day of action. several businesses have decided to stay closed today. that is what the protestors want. there are signs saying they support the 99%. hundreds of teachers are expected to walk out of classrooms. the oakland school for the arts is closed today, although other oakland schools will be open and students are expected to show up. all told, more than 100 labor unions say they are supporting the protest to send "a messages. " later today demonstrators will march on the port of oakland to try to shut down the night shift there. it

anne makovec with the arrest and the message to city officials. anne? >> reporter: yeah, protestors say they may be moving that civic center plaza as soon as this afternoon but right now they are still here behind me at justin herman plaza. that camp was not raided last night by police. but as we move down the block here on market street between stewart and spear, you can see there are several police officers, police vehicles, and police barricades. this is where they raided an encampment overnight. they confiscated about 10 tents but further down the block at the intersection with spear you can see some campers returned with sleeping bags. they have been there for a couple of hours. businesses had been complaining about this one block of the encampment. that is why police moved in there around 1:30 this afternoon put up these barriers, cleared out the tents and arrested seven people. only three of them are facing charges though this morning. those people police say have refused to leave the encampment. some of them are claiming excessive force this mor

anne makovec is there. we'll have another live report coming up at the top of the hour. >>> meanwhile, it is 4:46 now. a bay area woman found common ground with a man who stole a car and texted a thief to get it back. earlier monica came home in a rush left the keys in the ignition and in a matter of seconds a thief jumped in took off with her car and her phone was inside. so her sister decided to text the thief on the phone telling the thief that her mother had just passed away. well, that prompted the man to call monica. turns out his mother died recently and he was a drug addict. [ pause ] >> also just lost his mom and was scared and was hurt and was reaching out for help to a complete stranger whose car he just stole. so just imagine the risk he was taking. how hard was it for him to reach out for help? >> well, three phone calls later the man left her car at a kfc parking lot keys inside. later she invited him over for dinner. he refused. she says she hopes the man is now getting some much-needed help

anne makovec at the camp where protestors are showing no signs of leaving. >> reporter: good morning. still several tents out here at the "occupy oakland" encampment. it doesn't look like any of them have thinned out overnight. in the meantime, you can see a vigil at the site of last night's shooting for the man who was killed who was identified at this vigil by a teen by the and a alex. there is tension in the air that an end to this encampment could be around the corner. the mayor and some councilmembers say that even if last night's shooting has nothing to do with the "occupy oakland" encampment, that underscores this place is not safe. they are asking campers to peacefully leave as of last night this as the investigation into that shooting continues. no one has been arrested yet. some protestors say the motive was a drug deal gone bad. >> the risks are too great for having an encampment out there. i need have my police resources out in the community in neighborhoods that traditionally have much more violence and needs the peace. it's time for the encampment to end. >> reporter: sh

anne makovec in oakland where a memorial for the victim is growing this morning. anne, good morning. >> reporter: the encampment is the same as we have seen it for the past month. still existing here at frank ogawa plaza, not looking any smaller than it did yesterday at this time. it's several yards away from the entrance to the bart station. the murder was yesterday afternoon at 5:00. police haven't found an official connection between the shooting and the campers. i just spoke with one camper who says the victim was a camp visitor. >>> every other day sometime used to come visit, hang out. stuff like that. he was a good kid. doesn't bother nobody. just wanted something out of life. you know. end up at the bad end of the stick. >> reporter: now, the mayor and some councilmembers say that even if last night's shooting doesn't center anything to do with the "occupy" encampment that this underscores the place is not safe. they are asking campers to leave peacefully as of last night. >> we need a peaceful resolution on the encampment. i call on the campers to volunta

anne makovec is at sproul plaza with the students who say they are not going to stop. >> reporter: the crowd has been ebbing and flowing through the plaza today meeting in small groups like you can see up there on the steps. they're talking about how they are going to be protesting the cuts to education in the system as well as standing with the "occupy" movement worldwide. they are preaching nonviolence after a rough night here last night. >> reporter: scenes of police using batons to break up some of the hundreds of protestors trying to protect abutting "occupy" encampments near sproul hall. [ screaming ] >> reporter: after police warned them that they wouldn't allow tents in the area, protestors set them up anyway and in the clash that followed, demonstrators say several of their own were injured. >> straight-up police brutality. just people standing there kind of like looking at each other talk and then they get a billy club to the stomach. it was ridiculous. >> reporter: in this melee at around 9:30 last night, more than 30 protestors were arrested and this was the second confront

anne makovec with the message they have to city leaders. she joins us live from san francisco with more. anne, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, frank. they say they are moving next to civic center plaza as soon as today. overnight police raided one block of market street where campers had put up tents friday. it's the first block of market street and you can see, some campers have already moved back in there at the intersection of spear street in their sleeping bags. they have set up a tent but police moved them out, and they went to the next block filled with campers, the federal reserve block of market street. so basically you have these two encampments and a block in between, the first block of market street was the block that was raided last night. there's about a dozen tents set up here and the operation led to seven arrests. >> police moved in around 1:30 this morning at spear and market street. they surrounded it and put up barriers. some of. protestors then moved the metal barriers. then police confiscated the dozen tents and cuffed

anne makovec is live in oakland now, where that cleanup has already begun. good afternoon, ann. >> reporter: good afternoon, and we still have a couple of blocks of 14th street here on the side of frank ogawa plaza closed down right now. barricaded off. you can see some protesters remaining to argue with police, as there was one more arrest, just in the past 20 minutes, a man had walked up and was yelling at police and tried to throw something at him. they arrested him. there is also one protester up there in the tree. he has not come down for several hours. but in the meantime, the city workers continue clearing and cleaning the plaza. and hoping to reopen it for protests without any tents. >> oakland police. >> reporter: in the early morning hours, police ripped down more than 100 tents that remained after the city gave four eviction notices to the occupy oakland camp. and even as dozens of protesters were arrested, early this morning, the crowd of around 500 remain peaceful, in and around frank ogawa plaza. the enforcement operation began at around 4:00 a

uc-berkeley isn't letting the campus turn into a camp anne makovec reports. >> reporter: you can see several dozen protestors camped out here behind me. you have about four tents set up as well as other protestors wrapped up in sleeping bags right now. the police standing in a line as you can see there in riot gear behind them. police said they wouldn't allow people to set up camp like you see here but they are trying to prevent a full-on "occupy" camp like we saw in berkeley outside city hall. here was the scene as police moved through the crowd at around 9:30 last night to remove the tents that had been put up. several students complained of excessive force saying they were injured by jabs from officers' batons. 32 people were arrested in this confrontation with officers from uc-berkeley, sheriff's office and the oakland pd. they confiscated the tents and supplies. this what you're look at now was the second big melee of yesterday. the first happened around 3:30 p.m. take a look at that. this is youtube video from inside that confrontation. police pushing through a line of protesto

anne makovec is in san francisco with more on the mayor's compromise. >> reporter: will the people here camped at justin herman plaza who have been here for weeks agree to move to this new site? it is on mission street between 15th and 16th streets. we stopped by there this morning. this is some video of that site. it's the old phoenix continuation high school a fenced-off lot surrounded by portable buildings. the city said they would have access to a bathroom and maybe even a portable to hold meetings. the city's public works director took some of the "occupiers" on a tour of this site on saturday. the next step would take the matter to board of education. this new possibility comes as pressure increases on the camp at justin herman plaza. the city raided some side camps on market street this weekend and now some nearby businesses are threatening legal action on the camp at justin herman plaza. the campers are concerned they might be out of sight, out of mind out mission street and may prefer to move to another area. >> i have to ask you a question. is the mayor's office worried this m

anne makovec is at san francisco city hall where ballot counting isn't over just yet. isn't that right, anne? good morning. >> reporter: no. today is going to throw a real wrench into the whole situation because no candidate reached the 50% mark. not even ed lee. we're going to go to the ranked choice system. that means basically an instant runoff. those votes are being counted today. let's take a look at the early numbers right now as far as percentage points. ed lee with 31%. john avalos the number 2 spot with 19. then dennis herrera with 11%. this is before ranked choice numbers get factored in. those are the votes for second and third choice. lee's campaign is doing some precelebrating partying last night as the results started coming in. they are confident that enough people made lee their second or third choice to put him over the top. >> 39%... >> campaign that represents every neighborhood talked to them about what they wanted. they want jobs. they want a strong economy. we did all of that. we continue talking positive about the city. >> reporter: lee was appoi

anne makovec is in oakland to explain what is planned for today. good morning to you, anne. >> reporter: good morning. nobody knows exactly what to expect today because this is the first so-called general strike here in oakland since 1946. it is going to be a general strike and a mass day of action here all started by "occupy oakland." we have seen some people milling around this morning making signs for the planned protests today. thousands of people are expected to participate. now, yesterday businesses near downtown oakland got an email from mayor jean quan. she encouraged them to stay open but did warn them of the strike telling them to be sure their business has good quality locks to cover exposed door jams with steel plates and to leave cash drawers empty in case things get out of control. several businesses have decided to just stay closed today including one downtown bank. hundreds of teachers are expected to walk out of the classroom, although students are being told to go to school. the oakland school for the arts is the only school offic

anne makovec is in berkeley with what's going on there this morning. >> reporter: good morning. we have a couple of dozen protestors camping out here at sproul plaza at uc-berkeley. we have three tents and several students sleeping right now in sleeping bags and on cardboard boxes. they have been hanging out here all night. police say that they would not allow people to set up tents, but you can see there is some tolerance for it. police are really, though, trying to prevent a full-on "occupy" camp something like we saw at the oakland city hall. [ screaming ] >> stop beating students! >> reporter: this was the scene as police moved through the crowd at around 9:30 last night to remove several tents that had been put up, several students complaining of excessive force at that point saying that they were injured by jabs from officers' batons. 32 people were arrested in this confrontation with officers from uc-berkeley, sheriff's officers and the oakland pd. they confiscated the protestors' tents and supplies and this was the second big melee of yesterday. the first one happened ar
