the jackson family has now gathered inside the courtroom, as michael jackson's fans stand vigil outside the courtroom. live now inside the courtroom, we wait for the judge. dr. conrad murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter. he faces up to four years in prison. and could lose his medical license, depending on the verdict. we start with nbc's kristen dahlgren, who has the greatest sense of what is going on inside and outside of that courtroom. hi, kristen. >> reporter: hi, dylan. about of five minutes ago, our producer said there is still no sign of dr. conrad murray here. so the murray camp still has not arrived and that verdict is going to be read in about five minutes from now. so he's expected to arrive here any moment. meantime, the crowd really just growing here outside of the courthouse. we were given two hours' notice between the time that the jury had reached its verdict and when it's being read, so that's giving a lot of people a chance to get down here. many of them michael jackson fans. they've got signs. they've been cheering when the family arrived, shouting things

jackson. you could tell that they were very, very appreciative of their work, the district attorney's work in this case. >> the maximum sentence is four years, and there's also this whole issue of whether he can carry on practicing as a doctor. what are you anticipating will be the outcome here? >> well, his medical license in each of the states where he practices will have to be dealt with by those medical board. the court of law has no control over that. the california medical board has already indicated they'll suspend his license. he could try to petition for it back later, but that would be a whole other process. he's looking at four years max, but however it's likely he'll probably spend about two years and that two years maybe in a county jail because of funding issueses in the state of california. >> ted rowlands you've done a fantastic job on this trial from start to finish. thank you again for your reporting. >>> joining me now, a member of dr. murray's defense team, nareg gourjian.

as for the jacksons, there was an audible reaction from la toya jackson and/or kathy hilton who were sitting together. but for the most part, the jacksons were somber. they did however exchange hugs after the jury left the room with david walgren, the lead prosecutor who did an outstanding job in this case. mrs. jackson stopped and hugged the prosecutor before she left the courtroom. murray now has been taken to the l.a. county jail. he will be there until he is sentenced. on the 29th of this month. >> and watching that at the very end as the judge was wrapping up the proceedings, it was interesting to watch the deputies handcuff dr. murray while he was still seated in the chair. normally they wait for him to stand up as the proceedings are ending. back on the 29th, sentencing then. that is the issue, right? he faces up to four years in prison. are there any other questions to be answered between now and that next court appearance? >> reporter: the big question is the state of southern california broke. a lot of nonviolent offenders are getting light sentences because of that. and or

the riky jackson murder trial begins. jackson has now been in jail for nearly a year. in opening arguments, the defense drops its bombshell. they have proof that riky jackson's fingerprints were mistakenly identified by the upper darby police department. >> we did not know until opening statements which avenue of the forensic evidence that the defense would challenge. >> sergeant anthony paparo spends three days on the stand testifying for the state about his identification methods and findings. >> the judge permitted me to come down off the witness stand with my chart and stand in front of the jury. i'm showing the points and doing the unit relationship to show everyone sitting there. i went through painstakingly how i eliminated individuals, how i could not eliminate individuals and visually showed the jury how the identification was made. >> for the defense, wynn and mccloud say just the opposite. they both testify that police misidentified riky jackson's prints. >> as i recall saying in the trial, as fingerprints go, these prints weren't even in the ballpark. >> pa
