very latest on this, politico's ken vogel. politico broke the original story about seven days ago now, ken. walk folks through what has happened over the past seven or eight days here for folks who have not been following this story very closely. >> this story has had a lot of twists and turns since we broke it last sunday. initially the cain campaign and herman cain flatly denied that there were any settlements. they have since acknowledged that there's one settlement. we, of course, have reported and have definitively proven that there are two settlements. and additionally other outlets have reported that there are additional women during herman cain's time as the president and ceo of the national restaurant association. also accused him of sexual harassment but did not actually file a formal complaint or get a settlement. it's unclear into which category this apparent fourth woman who gloria allred is representing who is going to apparently speak here shortly into which category she falls. so we'll have to see and certainly

. >> politico's chief investigative reporter ken vogel co-authored the story with jonathan martin and two other reporters. ken, let's just start with your reaction to herman cain's day yesterday. what's your take on it? >> well, i've got to agree with some of the other pundits whose comments you excerpted there in the lead, he's botched the response. he had ten days. we contacted him ten days before we published this story with specific allegations that had been relayed by multiple sources. they refused to comment. initially, they denied all knowledge of this. then they said that herman cain had some vague recollection of it. but as you saw right before we published this story, he refused to say whether he had ever even been accused of sexual harassment. so, as this sort of array of interviews progressed yesterday and you saw his story change, it's kind of difficult to know where he now stands and what he did know and what he didn't know. >> okay, what are the chances that one of these women violates the nondisclosure agreement, comes forward and tells us more about what really happen

politico's ken vogel has been at the forefront on this story for nearly a week. ken, thanks for joining us. and let's just start, this is a fast-moving story, what's the latest from the politico newsroom? >> well, we reported yesterday evening, chris, that a woman who was one of the first women who we mentioned in our initial story on this, we were able to determine the specifics of an incident that she had alleged where herman cain had invited her up to his hotel room at a national restaurant association convention in the late '90s and made what was interpreted as a sexual pass at her. this directly contradicts his assertion that he never invited any female employee at the national restaurant association up to a hotel room. it also to some extent casts doubt on his assertion that he was not aware of these allegations because in fact we reported that this woman took her concerns to national restaurant association board members and eventually those concerns were relayed to the national restaurant association general counsel peter kilgore who remains the counsel to

let's bring in ken vogel with politico. what's the latest information, we r settlement in our story on sunday. >> the notion though that there's another inconsistency here between what he's been saying publicly monday and tuesday and what you're now getting, elaborate a little bit on the inckoconsistency we're getting. >> first of all, he insisted he never invited a female employee to his hotel room. we're hearing from multiple sources that that is thot the case. that he did invite this woman, who we have confirmed her identity, to his room during a national association meeting in the late 1990s. additionally, he said he was unaware of any allegations made by any employee other than this one particular individual who we reported on sunday. the woman who we are writing about today is a different woman who brought allegations to high ranking members of the national restaurant association. it's certainly possible that he never found out about these allegations, but considering we have now confirmed this woman who brought this

let's bring in ken vogel with politico. what's the latest information, ken, that you're getting? i want you to share it with our viewers here in the united states and ornd the world. >> we're reporting is that there were high level discussions during late 1990s nra board meeting where a woman, an employee, had complained that herman cain invited her up to his hotel room, that immediately after wards, there were discussions where this woman brought this complaint to at least two board members in the national restaurant association and subsequently, the general counsel, a guy still at the association named peter kill gore, were made aware of this and he and another board member looked into these, that contradicts what cain said. both that he never invited an employee to his room and also that he wasn't aware of any allegations other than the one we reported and confirmed, resulted in a settlement in our story on sunday. >> the notion though that there's another inconsistency here between what he's been saying publicly monday and tuesday and what you're now getting, elaborate a litt

political an list karen finney and politico chief investigative reporter ken vogel joins me from washington. karen, mr. cain has fired at almost everyone. the democratic party, rick perry, he's blamed the accusers, accusing them of fabrication. what was your reaction when his campaign chief mark block made up a story about her son? >> number one he know that mr. block is completely not ready for prime time mr. smoky, right? we've shown that that for some time. the whole blaming the victim. we're the victim. we're being victimized mentality that i think has gotten them into trouble. when politico first came to them with the story, they had ten days to come up with a credible answer. and instead know what did we see when the stories came snout all this obje the changing of answers. >> who is the young man? >> he has no connection to karen kraushaar. he is not related to her. he said she was his mother. he did work at politico. he covered house races. he went on to the national journal where he is an editor for the hotline covering house races and congressional races. he tweeted that he was no

the other news tonight from my colleagues ken vogel, alex burns, described more in depth what happened with mr. cain and one of these women at a hotel room at a convention put on my by the organization in the late '90s where mr. cain made a sexual overwhich you are to the woman and the woman sought out a board member of the organization just hours after the encounter. >> i mean, herman cain repeatedly changed his story over this and doesn't help him. having said that, the argument it happened a long time does hold some water. where do you think the depth charge will come in the scandal if at all? >> well, that's the big question that we're all waiting for. you know, the ap yesterday reported that there was a third woman involved, piers. so we are obviously still reporting, talking to sources. you know, mr. cain has been defiant ever since we broke the story on sunday night. and has said that, yes, there was an accusation of one woman and he's not talking about the other one. nor the third one that the ap broke. tomorrow, though, piers, could be interesting. tomorrow friday one of the w

karen finney, ken vogel and professor michael eric dyson. and he said they're attacking my character, my reputation, and my name. isn't that a bit rich coming from a man who repeatedly refers to his accusers as troubled women? or women in tough financial straits? >> absolutely true. i mean, this is a bit of a hypocrisy blowing back in his face. the disregard for women, the disrespect for women has evoked this response from a woman who voluntarily came forth to subject herself to ridicule and dismissal as the other woman. and who put all of her wares so to speak on the table. the phone records, the late night calls and so on and so forth to say don't disrespect other women and treat them as if they're somehow engaging in hyperbolebly or exaggeration because you want to win the presidency and the ultimate sweepstakes to occupy the oval office. but herman cain has been so obviously damaging to these other women that this woman stemmed forward. so i think that to suggest that we're attacking his character is as you say a bit rich. the reality is

as you just noted, my colleagues, ken vogel and anna palmer reported that the nra was indeed looking to back their former head. and now they are sort of circling wagons, trying to keep people from talking about this. current and former employees. i think that mr. cain is going to continue to get asked about this until he can explain exactly what happened. he says he never committed sexual harassment. he's been very clear about that since yesterday. we tried getting answers before that. i think until he gives a full version of events that does not sort of change as we go, this is going to continue to dog him going forward. >> maggie, you are someone who worked on this story for at least ten days, maybe more. a lot oaf. >> more. >> a lot of people have been questioning, asking, was this story leaked by another republican candidate? where did this story come from? >> no reporter ever talks about where they come about information or how they come about information. but the story was very, very thoroughly reported, as you saw. four of us were bylined on it. we talked to a number of differ
