this year, over 700 unemployed san franciscans have been placed in jobs, including 200 individuals who are now maintaining our streets and our parks while building career skills. additionally, the city has been awarded an a grant from the department of labour to provide employment for low-income, non- can -- low-income, non-custodial parents. this program will provide job training and placement, transitional employment, and incentives such as adjusted child support obligations to assist non-custodial parents need their child-support responsibilities and gain employment. public-sector programs like jobs now and transitional sf are important, but they're only part of the solution. equally important -- private- sector employment growth. at the end of the day, the only way our job training and placement programs are going to be successful, is to make sure there is a job for every san franciscan. that is why i would join supervisor avalos in providing construction jobs. i support initiatives that focus on our manufacturing sector. i have also called for the creation of jobs investments, and

san franciscans during campaigns read everything they are sent in the mail. love to meet candidates. a gauge with them in conversations. i also learned how important it is to build bridges between communities, particularly communities of diversity we have. i was just incredibly honored to have been elected in november 2008. my district really encompasses the ethnic and economic diversity that exists throughout the city. as a result, i think my district is really emblematic of the entire city. you can find every political perspective that you could possibly want in district 3. so oftentimes, the interest of my district and the city really are quite a line, so i do not have to think about this difference is probably quite as often as some of my colleagues may have to. i in particular want to thank the mayor for his decision to protect our nutrition programs. this is something that i think we all believe is incredibly important at a time when we have seen massive federal and state cuts, for us to hold the line locally and stand up in the city of st. francis for

[applause] >> we are honored to be a partner with the city and with all san franciscans. it has been a hard time. we just got our numbers in. last month, we saw a number of -- another 15% increase in the number of guests coming to our dining room. we're seeing an increase in the technology lab. we're able to meet the needs that grow because of the generosity of san francisco. we know the weather turns colder. we know the economy is still slow and many people still suffer. the other thing i see on a daily basis is hope. when san franciscans and people all over the bay area continue to come together, there is a lot of abundance. there's a great generosity. like the mayor and others, we come together. we may be volunteering, donating food or cash. it really helps. in giving, you and still hope. this the season of giving and hope. we come together and join together with the nonprofits gathered today. we all work together, whether we're buying food together, coordinating other efforts. it is all of us coming together as a family, a big community family here in the san francisc
