high temperatures today in the upper 40s in the sierra. we are talking about a couple inches of snow in the mountains of southern california. kind of unusual for them for early or mid-november. 65 in los angeles, 64 in big sur and back home plenty of 60s. low to mid-60s. almost around average for today. 63 san jose, and we are talking about upper 50s at our coast, starting out with fog, cool, a lot of moisture and then drying out throughout the day. afternoon high 63 downtown. 58 in sunset district and in the north bay highs from 56 bodega bay. and fairly uniforms numbers from san leandro to newark. on the cool side but a nice change from yesterday. the rain just kind of stayed with us throughout much of the afternoon. today it's over with in danville and you will wake up to some clouds and then sunshine. 62 in salinas. here's the look ahead. a stray isolated shower well south this morning and then we are talking sunny and milder right through the middle of the week with mid-and upper 60s around the bay. then by thursday and friday, anothe

icy snow pellets and 29 degrees at mile high in the sierra. a very difficult night for travel for folks going eastbound towards lake tahoe. a lot of problem problems on the roadway with slick roads and trucks lowing control and spinouts. fortunately no serious injuries, but the flipside is that some people are really happy with it. a handful of skiers and snowboarders have the ski area all to themselves. skiing in a well-lit snowstorm until 9:00. >> it's perfect, nobody is here and it'snize and soft and you couldn't ask for me. >> it's not too bad. >> reporter: good start for the season? >> definitely. >> boreal has taken advantage to make more snow. the driver of a westbound pickup truck went off the road and so did the trailer he was pulling. the driver was making a lane change and lost control. fortunately he was not injured. what did you think when you thought i's from going off- road? >> i thought bleich -- excuse me my french, i just total mid truck was my first thought when i saw the glass break and trees coming through the window. >> r

you are born in sri lanka, raised in sierra leone, you spend a lot of your time traveling around the world tually looking at the impact of global warming. >> right. >> hinojosa: so when you hear people say, in this country, "well, i don't really feel it, it doesn't feel like a crisis," you say what? >> so the way i approach global warming is that i think of it as an insurance question. it's like if you were driving down the street and someone told you that your house was on fire, and then someone said, "oh, no, it's not really your house, it's the house next door, don't worry about it," what would you do? you'd probably turn around and go back. you have insurance not because you actually think your place is going to burn. you have insurance because, you know, if it happens, it's such a catastrophic problem that there's no real way out of it. so right now we're in this really important point where i feel like if there is a possiblity that this is going to happen it makes a lot of sense for us to take care of it now. and i think it's not just a possibility. most scientists would agree

rain in the bay area forecast this weekend we means snow in the sierra. let's bring in our sister station in sacramento with more. >> reporter: slick conditions are something that had this trucker literally spinning his wheels today. >> that's, you know, spinning. >> reporter: but he wasn't alone. what was it like driving earlier? >> it was pure ice, shiny ice. >> reporter: this is a look at why. overnight snow that sierra residents say dumped 4 to 9 inches of early november snow. >> i didn't think it would be this much. it's a little early. >> reporter: the chp says so many drivers were unprepared for winter conditions today that they had to deal with a five-mile-long backup due to a stuck unprepared big rig driver on eastbound i-80, as well as other problems. >> if they had their chains, proper fitting chains and were prepared for the weather, then a lot of the traffic would have been achieve updated. >> reporter: how long did the weather and unprepared drivers delay some drivers? listen to what happened to this trucker, and how long he is now stuck in

notice there is no snow in the sierra just yet. we have into the early morning hours some areas of more moderate rain as well. this continues by 6:00 p.m. on thursday but still there is no snow in the sierra. as we head through the rest of thursday your thanksgiving day we continue to see showers. we start to see rain and some snow and the sierra and that will continue through thursday evening and the rain in the bay area will be mostly taper off. noticed by 9:00 p.m. we have dry conditions over lake tahoe. take a look closer at the bay area. a few light showers in the north bay for the early morning hours. for most of the day we will see light showers in the north bay. by noon we have the same story. continuing through the afternoon there comes the main band of rain. cui was start to see more areas of moderate rain. the rain continues through the north bay and then by 68 finally start to spread towards the golden gate. but this system will start to split some will to the north and some to the south as it continues to push through.

so nice day in the northern sierra. southern sierra making it up to 60. back home, for now we're enjoying sunshine outside the studios. looking at the bay bridge. plenty of sun out there. we do have a weak weather system to the east of us that will provide high clouds from time to time. it's in the low 50s in redwood city. we did have cloud cover overnight we didn't drop too cool in some spots. protected valleys we did see low 40s for a time in santa rosa. mostly sunny skies throughout the morning hours. in the afternoon a few high clouds and maintain the dry weather pattern the next several days. this will last through the end of the week? not likely, much cooler conditions with the opportunity after a few systems to bring rain and perhaps mountain snow to the sierra nevada. other end of the bay. 66% of normal for rainfall totals for this time. we're looking at santa rosa and san jose in between oakland and san francisco with over two inches of rain. it brings it up to about 92% of normal in the city with 101% of normal in oakland. so early season rain m

snow covering interstate 80 at king veil and the sierra making travel tricky tonight and it's been a wet evening driving on the roads in the bay area as you can see in the video from the golden gate bridge. here here in the forecast center as we look ahead to the weekend and the holidays. what should we expect? >> we've been seeing scattered showers through the day. we have little remnants of it offshore so it's possible second see a couple of scattered showers tonight but we are going to start to see clearer conditions overnight. that means fog. let's take a look at our rainfall totals that we saw out there today, not very much in most spots. the handful of spots were places like mill valley, .2 inches and a pretty heavy cell through san francisco that brought about .1 inches of rain in an hour. most places saw of a hundredths of a pitcher of rain so as we head into saturday, we're going to see partly cloudy conditions for most of day, morning fog again and late afternoon showers as another system pushes in. it's going to be mostly in the evening that we're going to see the rain on

i'm not going to go into heavy detail, i want to take you down here into the sierra madre. i was following routes all over for the house of rain, trying to figure out where the anastazi went when they left house of rain. many of them made the modern pueblos but other groups continued south. i followed pottery trails down into the sierra madre where my wife and two others went out and we came to these cliff dwellings. it seemed like every single cave we looked into had cliff dwellings. and this wasn't a place with trails. this wasn't a known location. many of these sites were pristine. they were just -- it looked as if people had just left suddenly, just like all the stories in here. little cliff dwellings, little granaries, little sites falling apart. larger sites. this site went actually 5 layers deep into this cave. very particular to this region were these shaped storage rooms. this one is about 10 feet high. often they would have door stones sealing them on the top. and they were of all kinds of shapes and sizes, but they specific to that area. that's the smallest one w

up across the sierra, highway 50, interstate 80, winter weather advisory in effect. you're going to start to encounter the winter conditions at 3,000 feet. we've learned heavenly and north star officially opened today. it's going to be great skiing weather for you. you'll need the layers if your headed out. 51 at livermore and 54 in san jose. what about your weekend? it's not going to be wet the entire weekend. for saturday, mainly have fog, clouds, even breaks of sunshine. but this second system looks to bring some of the wetter impacts as we head into sunday. it's already developing out here. it has a lot of rainfall with it. but here is the problem. this storm is not moving from the west to the east. it's moving from the north to the south. so it's another coastal storm that looks at this point to keep the heaviest rainfall offshore. no doubt it's going to keep us cold throughout saturday, 50s inland. on sunday, it looks like the most consistent rainfall will be moving back into the bay area. as we head throughout tomorrow morning, we'll have the cloud cover with
