we've also seen them from uc berkeley. what's happening here, they've got at least a dozen tents, some people in them clearly defying the university's position. but the atmosphere out here, people are talking, they are blowing bubbles. they are walking around. some of them are on bicycles this morning. we have some video, though, from last night when thousands of people showed up at sproul plaza to hear former labor secretary robert reich talk about the fight for economic equality. occupy cal voted last night to go ahead and set up the tents once again. they've got a contingent out here, a sign out here from occupy oakland out here in support, uc police again also out here. i haven't had a chance to speak with any officers yet, but what the demonstrators are telling me is that the police have told them several times that camping is illegal and that they do need to leave. they need to take the tents down, but they say that so far the officers have pretty much kept their distance. what we have is officers watching this group

there's a big day of action planned here at uc berkeley. an it looks like they're going to get support from neighbors one city over. occupy oakland. there's still a lot of tension from last week's occupy protest as students set up tents. police tore them down immediately. the officers are being criticized for their use of force and how they handled it. the chancellor called for a review and granted amnesty to those arrested that day. they're calling on banks to refund higher education. they're planning on teachouts. they will march on banks. they said last week they may try to reestablish their encampment again. they won't be going to the ree ons meeting in san francisco this week as planned. because it was canceled out of fear that things might turn violent. something done by a fringe group. exactly how many dpon stray tors will come is almost clear. they will decide what to do in oakland. in the meantime they plan to march here and be be here by noon today. i'm christie smith. jon and laura, back to you. >>> a group of protesters plans to

we have a couple of dozen protestors camping out here at sproul plaza at uc-berkeley. we have three tents and several students sleeping right now in sleeping bags and on cardboard boxes. they have been hanging out here all night. police say that they would not allow people to set up tents, but you can see there is some tolerance for it. police are really, though, trying to prevent a full-on "occupy" camp something like we saw at the oakland city hall. uc berkeley police along with the cal chancellor lor are moments away from conducting a news conference. and why this shooting took place. as soon as it begins actually all right. the news conference has just begun. let's go inside california hall with the chancellor and police chief are speaking. >> we're early and preliminary in the investigation stages of this. it's an event about an hour and a half into the investigation this, is preliminary information we have at the time. at about 2:17 we received a 911 call that there was a reported man with a gun in a backpack at the haas business school. our -- at 2:19 officer arrived at the haas business school and made contact with occupants in the haas business school and determined the individual was in a computer lab-type environment. when the officers made contact with the suspect or the individual he in fact did pull a firearm out of the backpack and displayed knit a threatening manner. officers feared for them selfs and individuals in the room. they fired or shot at the individual hitting him. the individual is was injured. and he was c

in the last 30 minutes uc berkeley police have moved in and began taking tents. katie marzullo is live on campus. >> reporter: the camp has been clear. what we are seeing right now, the occupy cal protesters doing a mic check right now. we want to let you know they are saying how the administration said that they could stay with tends -- [ inaudible ] -- protesters in high spirits as you can hear. riot gear are here. they did clear the tents from the steps of sproul hall. now they are surrounding sproul plaza keeping protesters on the outside. we heard report there is were some arrests. we have not heard any reports of violence or conflict or confrontation with police. for the most part the students are staying quiet, i mean, nonviolent but they are making noise seem to be having a good time. it is not all students. some are residents of berkeley. and the residents were -- [ inaudible ] nonstudents were asked to stay at a further away barrier. that is who is playing the music. interesting scene we'll continue to follow it. and find out more about what is going on

. >>> and we're learning more about the uc berkeley student behind the campus shooting at cal. we have more information about the student shot and killed by police, alex? >> reporter: well, chris travis had started a two year degree program here at the school of business. for some reason yesterday he brought a loaded handgun in with him to the computer lab on campus. the police officers ended up confronting him. and in the end they shot him. this is a facebook page set up to honor 32-year-old chris travis, the uc berkeley student killed by campus police yesterday. according to this youtube video, he worked as a shift supervisor for a security company. he dropped out of school before but was giving it another try, hoping to pursue a career in national business. he was living in the house near campus. his neighbor says he was quiet, kept to himself. >> it does surprise me, interesting you know, you never really get to know the people you live around well enough to expect something like that. >> reporter: meanwhile, the room where those shots were fired yesterday, it is still clos

the uc berkeley chancellor we talked with him this afternoon, he told us that there was a woman, a staff member who spotted this man or road the elevator with this man and saw the gun in his backpack. he apparently while he was in the elevator with this staff member, he reached in the backpack and reached in for the gun. that drew concern in her and she ended up alerted authorities. no one hurt in this shooting, we are still waiting. we asked police for an update on the condition of the man with the gun who was shot. he was rushed over to highland hospital we understand. we don't know his condition, police are not releasing his condition. they're not saying much about who he is either. we asked whether he's a student, they said at this point it's unclear if this person is a student or not. all we know is he is a man, a white man in his 20s, and again, uc berkeley police confronted him. he had a weapon they say inside of the business school this afternoon and he was shot by uc berkeley police officers. that's the latest as we know it here from the cal campus, i'm alex sadvedge. >>> from a

ann notarangelo at uc-berkeley has more details. ann. >> reporter: allen, we can update you on those numbers. if you look behind me you can see there are a couple of hundred people here still at sproul plaza and in front of the sproul hall. it is a peaceful demonstration. but seven people have been arrested. one of those is a faculty member. this all started at 1:30. there were about 3,000 people here at that time. and they are protesting cuts to education and higher fees. they started putting up tents. this goes directly in the face of a letter isn't out by the chancellor on monday. he said the university would not tolerate encampments or occupying. buildings. when they started building tents, the police moved in along with the sheriff's department. they started removing those tents. according to protestors, it got rough. they say that one of the protestors in fact had an arm broken and he is in the hospital. as you mentioned, police have backed off. now there are about four tents that are in place right in front of sproul hall. an

it happened just blocks from the uc berkeley campus. why firefighters are still keeping watch nearly 24 hours after the fire started. >> it's all so surreal. >> reporter: when she saw the smoke from her apartment window and shot this video for her cellphone, a raging fire in this five-story building on telegraph and hanes. >> it got bigger and bigger. there was black smoke coming out of the windows, too. >> reporter: her building was evacuated but it was the people that lived in the 39 apartments in this building that she really felt for, mainly students at uc berkeley. >> they were just speaking out because they just lost all of their stuff and they're crying. we're so close to finals week, too. they're just freaking out about the whole thing. >> reporter: and firefighters still don't know how many people were in there. they're asking anyone who lives there to contact the fire department for a head count. the red cross is helping at least eight people with emergency housing. >> it is a kind of constant state of not knowing what's going

uc-berkeley isn't letting the campus turn into a camp anne makovec reports. >> reporter: you can see several dozen protestors camped out here behind me. you have about four tents set up as well as other protestors wrapped up in sleeping bags right now. the police standing in a line as you can see there in riot gear behind them. police said they wouldn't allow people to set up camp like you see here but they are trying to prevent a full-on "occupy" camp like we saw in berkeley outside city hall. here was the scene as police moved through the crowd at around 9:30 last night to remove the tents that had been put up. several students complained of excessive force saying they were injured by jabs from officers' batons. 32 people were arrested in this confrontation with officers from uc-berkeley, sheriff's office and the oakland pd. they confiscated the tents and supplies. this what you're look at now was the second big melee of yesterday. the first happened around 3:30 p.m. take a look at that. this is youtube video from inside that confrontation. police pushing through a line of protesto
