the mud slide shut down 280 near woodside. pg&e crews were testing a three- mile section of the pipeline between men machine and woodside. these tests are prompted after last year's explosion in san bruno. they empty a pipeline, pump it through with high-pressure water to test for leaks, especially as they gear up towards the winter months. pg&e says testing for leaks is exactly what these tests are designed to do. as i mentioned, these tests were designed after the pg&e explosion in san bruno. they have tested 120 miles of line so far. they expected to do another 30 miles before year's end. we're told pg&e crews will be back out this morning to continue testing and repairing the damage from sunday night's explosion. also spoke with chp. they are telling us there should be no effect on the morning commute. >> thank you, anser hassan. >>> a few miles away along the same type line testing uncovered what pg&e describes a pinhole leak one millimeter in side near stanford. the explosion a few miles away was unrelated to that leak.

kraig debro joins us live from woodside to explain more about this process. >> reporter: well, pg&e was not happy about the mudslide. but they did say this was the good type of result. nobody goss hurt. late -- nobody got hurt. pg&e says work probably won't begin until tomorrow morning. permits to do the work must first be secured. the rupture tore a two-foot hole section of pipe away. >> this is exactly what we want to have happen during a hydrostatic pressure test. the reason is, this is how we find the weaknesses in the pipe. so the way we know when something like this happens. >> reporter: the rupture sent water shooting up in the air and down the hill, highway 280. water and mud spread out over a part of the northbound section. someone reported the rupture at 3:30. pg&e says it was doing hydrostatic testing. the pipe burst when the pressure got to 550 pounds per square inch gauge. the pipe is only built to handle 300 ppig. >> we push it up to a point that is -- that is well above the normal operating capacity because we want to make sure there's a significant margin of safety. so w
