tonight, we are 50 years of the san francisco manila sister cities. there's a bridge that connects the thrill of the orient to the city by the bay. it is a bridge of ambassadors, one made of people whose roots and hearts and the pacific ocean. in april 1961, the city of seven cisco formally and stated a committee under the office of the mayor to become the preeminent cultural and economic [inaudible] between san francisco and manila, developing a system that promote closer ties between the cities. this year, the san francisco manila sister city committee represents -- celebrates its 50 year, marking five decades of service to our people. the san francisco bay area filipino american community salutes this milestone, a legacy of goodwill and true filipino american pride. >> representing the san francisco manila sister city committee, are defective chairman -- our de facto chairman. we have a wonderful city of san francisco. i know that we pride ourselves in being an international city. begins with celebrating all the diverse cultures and making sure everyone is recognized, that we have our education institutions reflect that, our cities, official events, reflected that but i know i have benefited greatly, not only as an attorney, but as someone who has worked in the city to have worked with so many leaders of the arab-american community. the business leaders have done very well here. knowing, also, the challenges that you face -- i also know there are so many examples of arab-american leadership in the technology world. just look at silicon valley and see how successful arab- americans have been. we are now recruiting those very companies to come to san francisco to make sure that we work with you for job creation. i am also very excited about so many small-business owners who are of arab-american descent. you have done so well in working in all of our different neighborhoods. i want to continue working

of san francisco. i wanted that i applaud the senior organizations for standing strong and organizing themselves to make sure that we have better funding streams from the city. not just looking at budget announced that have been satisfied by the mayor and others, but that we have strong money strains so that as the aging population doubles, so that in 20 to 30 years when they become senior boomers, we can show that everybody can aged with dignity in its san francisco and that we're an aging-friendly city. i am look forward to working with the other supervisors. thank you so much. >> thank you. [applause] so we have some other members on the board of supervisors. we're going to let them come up and address you, because they have some work to do next week. did you hear the mayor say there is some work for them to do? they're going to talk about it. our next supervisor is supervisor john avalos, another man of the people who cares about you. michael of the city and county of san francisco and through the years serve the city in many different capacities. he was a member of the campus task force created by then a supervisor and was selected by the rules committee to serve in that capacity. and in that capacity, advocated for the rights of medical cannabis patients. he always recognized that it was a human rights issue. michael was also very involved in the community and served as president of the democratic club. he distinguished himself in organizing not only the lgbt community, but he understood the importance of working with women groups, working with other groups representing the various averse communities in san francisco. michael was someone who believed in good government and spent many hours and dedicated a lot of time working on issues involving the city college of san francisco. i think that through his advocacy, and he saved a lot of money to the city college of san francisco. he was elected many times to the central committee and in that capacity, serve the city and county for many years working with clubs from

the city of san francisco is attempting to cannibalize the existing businesses by permitting more of these food trucks to operate with miniscule overheads in comparison to us. yet with complete freedom to cut into our customer base. if this permit or any such permit is issued in the area of the financial district, it will breach of the basic standard of fairness. this is not what free enterprise stands for, ladies and gentlemen. the principles of free enterprise that our mission -- that our nation is built on do not permit blatant promotion of one section of the economy at the cost of another. i am baffled that all this is being attempted. my question is, is the city of san francisco willing to agree the basic standards of fair play and free enterprise? the city has not conducted any surveys to assess the impact the facility would have on the existing businesses, especially in already saturated areas. it is improper to conduct any business without considering all of the impact it would have on any endeavor. our customers feel our pain. we have collected 1144 signatures from our custo

and it was a relationship that was formed between individuals and the city of san francisco. because again, this space was given to the community. it was given to a group that had not even formally forged itself. that shows that 20 years ago, there was commitment at all levels, and there continues to be. so where are we today. we are here today to recommit ourselves. we must realize that the fight is not over. every hour on the hour, the equivalent of a jumbo jet crashes, losing all of the passengers to aids. the fight is not over. we must continue to console, to support and to nurture each other. today we will be honored to hear from and to pay tribute to those that were in the fight 20, 25 and 30 years ago that so selflessly took a step forward. we will also hear from the next generation. because again, many of us have been in the trenches for 25 or 30 years. the fight is not over. and it is the next generation that has got to continue to take action, to get involved, to improve and to better not only the community, but the lives of the individuals that make it up. we will

i'm here to express our appreciation for the efforts of the city and the port of san francisco to address and mitigate many of the issues related to the 34th america's cup in the final e.i.r. the america's cup event is large and complicated with numerous potential and community impacts. we know that some concerns remain outstanding and we strong support the city to mitigate these items. that will ensure that all environmental programs and mitigations are successfully ane steps san francisco has taken. we upon the zero ways principles that will help avoid contributing to pollution. we are significantly concerned about air pollution . these would have been substantial if left on mitigated. what is proposed will leave san francisco with cleaner air than it has today thanks to these mitigation, and we appreciate that effort. all little more work needs to be done to protect our resources. gooto protect marine animals, we iterates our request. we also strongly recommend that the notice to voters representing the water and air traffic plan be presented to mariners before their entry into the san

san francisco is not only a beautiful city. it is a city and a community and a territory that serves the needs of the people. there is no doubt about it. people who are here today are ready and able to do the work. we want to expand and make sure that people in the city and bay area and do what they usually do. that is to make sure that no one has to suffer during the holiday season or in any season. no one should have to suffer. we come together to support you and let you know that this city is ready. take us and lead us, we will follow. no doubt about that. [applause] please join us on the podium. ramon ramirez and his wife emigrated to san francisco in 1955. since then, they have started many businesses, 1one that was a cafe, which then started catering food when they bought another cafe on 11th street where they sold mexican food that they made at the cafe, and they brought it over. it was so popular that they decided that they needed to expand the business. more than 20 years ago now, they founded the ramons, which is on 11th street. it is a place of great mexican food and heritage. we would like to honor and say thank you to all your working contributions to san francisco. [cheers and applause] >> now we move on to the field of media. >> our next awardee is marisol. i do not know how many of you have heard her on sunday mornings at 8:00. she has a radio show in spanish for latino families where they talk about various subjects from child development to teenage

[applause] [laughter] if you notice the eagle staff was up here on stage, my friend had shared with many of you, they stood side by side, the american flag, one time at war, and the only time you will see to flags of these nations side- by-side at peace, so we go over to our seniors for a flag song. please stand if you are able. long before the star spangled banner, many of these nations saying these songs -- sang these songs honoring the first flag of this nation. the eagles that recognizing the many battles. as the eagles would lead the warriors into battle, we would sing the song says. -

that is how they get around the city. welcome to san francisco. thank you. i hope you have great ideas and cooperation. thank you. [applause] >> the public wants to access particular information about your house or neighborhood we point them to gis. gis is a combination of maps and data. not a graphic you see on a screen. you get the traffic for the streets the number of crimes for a police district in a period of time. if the idea of combining the different layerce of information and stacking them on top of each other to present to the public. >> other types of gis are web based mapping systems. like google earth, yahoo maps. microsoft. those are examples of on line mapping systems that can be used to find businesses or get driving directions or check on traffic conditions. all digital maps. >> gis is used in the city of san francisco to better support what departments do. >> you imagine all the various elements of a city including parcels and the critical infrastructure where the storm drains are. the city access like the traffic lights and fire hydrants.

and county of san francisco. this year's theme -- celebrate the heritage, celebrated community voices. and to recognize the many contributions of our city's the reverse asian communities and their -- diverse asian communities and their efforts to promote tolerance and understanding between communities of color. 20 years ago, president carter signed into law a resolution declaring one week in the month of may as asian-pacific american heritage week. in 1990, that celebration was expanded to the entire month of may and in 1991, legislation was signed into law, proclaiming asian-pacific heritage month in may to be a permanent celebration in united states. that is wonderful for us. thank you again for being here this evening. back in 2005, mayor newsom enthusiastically supported the idea of a celebration each year that would include all apa communities in the city and county of san francisco, where -- get this. more than one-third of the population is asian-american and pacific islander. you rock. our next speaker is
